I can't remember what insanely high number of corner kicks we're on (revelation told me this weekend, but he also brought 4 cases of beer with him so my memory is ********ed) suffice it to say it's a lot. When I we gonna end that streak? BTW if anyone knows the exact number post it here.
We are currently over 186 corner kicks in League play (including playoffs) without a goal off a corner kick. Pathetic...
During the LA match, I was thinking about that stat, its current status, and when it would rear its ugly head here, and inevitably on the broadcasts. 186, gads. We should have another poll for the actual number before we score.
AH-HA! this very thread has been the antedote! There will be a goal scored by DC United of f a corner kick THIS VERY WEEKEND!!!
Here are the actual numbers....prepare to be frightened........ The last DC United goal scored off a corner kick in a league game occurred on August 31, 2002. That goal was scored by Eddie Pope, with Marco taking it. Since that time, DC has had the following number of corner kicks: 2002 (after 8/31): 33 2003 (regular season): 175 2003 (playoffs): 5 2004 (to date): 6 Which brings the total up to 219 corner kicks taken since they have last scored a goal in a league game. (The number is 214 if you just want to count regular season games.)
no i am serious, we're due. call it mojo, a vibe , a hunch, whatever. I know this. DC will score a goal off a corner against the mutts this weekend. if I wasn't so poor that i had to put my cinder blocks up on cinder bocks then wagering would commence.
When I first saw 186, I thought heck, why not shoot for 200. But if we're already up to 219, I say we score on our 222nd Say about 25 minutes into Saturday's game to make it 2-0.
I say we break our corner kick duck on the 222nd corner kick in the second minute (after a series of near misses) and then for good measure make it two corner kick goals by scoring in the 22nd minute to make it 2-0.
Does 186 include the two games this year? I say we don't need corner kicks. We're doing fine without them. May we never score on another corner kick again.
DC has scored on freekicks that were taken from near the corner flag so I think the long drought is, at least in part, a statistical anomaly. If DC hasn't scored by mid-season they should schedule a scrimmage against my co-ed team. We ALWAYS give up goals on corner kicks. We even had one blow directly into goal against us in our last game (30 mph winds).
Garbaggio, Nice thought to offer up your team as a sacrifice but the statistic is only referring to MLS league games. So unless you guys get taken up as an expansion team, the record will continue to stand. DC United scored on 1 corner last year - Wanker got one vs. the Riverhounds (IIRC) or was it the other USOC game in Germantown.
Long time reader, first time poster... OMG!!! Thanks for pulling that stat together. I couldn't believe the unbelievably high number of failed attempts LAST summer when it was brought to my attention at around 110. good lord. i wonder how our number compares to others in the league?
It was against the Riverhounds. He also scored on a corner in the first home game against Columbus last year, but it was called back due to a foul that no replay could show.
I'll refer you to this old post of mine for an attempted answer: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1226462&postcount=32 The short answer is that according to my very rough analysis, high scoring MLS teams scored on 3.5 % of their corner kicks in 2002-2003 (although this was an estimate). Here is what DC United has done with their corner kicks for the last two years: 2002: 185 corner kicks; 2 goals 2003: 180 corner kicks; 0 goals (that includes 5 from the playoffs) That means that DCU has scored on 0.55 % of their corner kicks over those two years. This year's numbers are: 2004: 6 corner kicks; 0 goals More accurate numbers (for 2003 at least), can be found in this post: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1752362&postcount=1 In that post, kenntomasch found that of the 2003 playoff teams, teams scored on their corner kick opportunities 2.12% of the time. However, that number is slightly skewed by DC's ineptitude on corner kicks. Eliminating us from the calculation, we find that the remainder of the playoff teams scored on their corner kicks 2.47% of the time during the 2003 regular season. You'll also note that Colorado was pretty bad last year on corner kicks, scoring only 1 in 136 attempts. So, basically, to sum it up: DC United has scored on 0.55 % of it's corner kick opportunties since the beginning of the 2002 season. The league average for playoff teams (excluding DC United) scoring goals on corner kicks in 2003 was 2.47%
Last year I cared. Then our only offense was falling down in the box and hoping the ref called it. Now it doesn't matter so much. I think we will break through, but our offense is looking so good, why get all depressed about this?
Let's see...last corner scored by Eddie Pope in 2002. We trade Pope to the Scum...could it be "the Pope curse?!?" I think not. All I have to say is "Corners? We don't need no steenkeeng corners!"
