Just saw the trailer for the feature adaptation of this novel by Neil Gaiman.

Apparently, this is the first 3-D puppet animation feature, and the whole thing is all hand made. Directed by Henry Selick, the guy who did A Nightmare Before Christmas.

I've read this book aloud to my students for the past 3 years. They've loved it each time, and by now I practically know the thing by heart. I'm considering taking my classes on a field trip to see the film. I frankly don't think the film looks promising as an adaptation, although it might be a good movie. I should reserve judgment until I've actually seen it...

I was just curious if anybody else has read this book (or the comic book adaptation that came out recently)? Whether you've read the book or not, what do you think of the trailer?

I'm a big fan of the book, and Neil Gaiman in general. I agree that the preview doesn't really capture the feel of the book - it is too frenetic and surprising, and doesn't have the contemplative, and confident feel of the writing. The bizarreness of Coraline is very, very bizarre, but it doesn't jump up and down saying "I'm bizarre!", it's more like "ok, and... hey, wait, what the heck was that?" For lack of a better term, I'd describe it as "Americanized". But maybe there isn't a choice - the book was rather short, after all.

I did like the Stardust movie a lot, and I also was a big fan of Neverwhere (although there the book was the adaption of the miniseries).
