For Reading, who will finish their season with a home match against Watford and a trip to Blackburn, European football looks distinctly likely. And although their manager Steve Coppell has repeatedly fought shy of the notion, even he was obliged to offer a wry acceptance of their happy position.

"Let's get it out of the way," he said with a grin. "We're going for Europe now. The chairman's told me I can have £200m extra so it's just a case of me writing the cheques.:D

He was joking about the 200M. If you read the next sentence...."Jesting apart, Coppell is on the brink of a startling achievement with the side he has guided to the top flight for the first time in their history.

I know he was joking...hence, the cheesy like green smile on the end of my post. We're not Man U (or have an American owner) and do not have that kind of money just yet...

But you are right...Coppell has done an outstanding job with a team that has had injuries all year long. It will be interesting to see who we buy in the next transfer window and how well they "mesh" with the lads...

BTW, sorry, but I edited the thread title to reflect currency rates, you accurately noted pds 200m in your post, but had that at $200m in the title. Bit more, these days (said the sad father of a kid starting uni in england).

Well, while our whip was smart enough to know he was joking (undoubtably cued in by the fact that he was laughing when he said it) skysport didn't catch that nuance:
    http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx...=108&lid=&title=Coppell+keeps+cash+in+reserve

Summaize, Copps is being criticized for holding the cash in reserve, despite the generous offer, he's not going to spend it and field a reserve side...
    Just, wow...

i've been arguing with a buddy just how much each team stands to make this year and next year, so I went back to this old thread richardl was posting in to help us settle the discussion.

50 mil pds for next year's winner is amazing, but even the last place team may get 26 mil or so with the new tv contract beginning in '07-08. my question is, w/ the royals making a push to make the 5-6 or 7 spot, how much more income would Madjeski stand to make? did i read someone say roughly 5 mil pds for every spot you move up?

selling siddy should garner $7-10 mil pds i would think. we'll need to spend roughly twice that to replace him and fortify for europe!

It's about pds 500, or $1m, per spot. The tv money is suppossed to be 50 percent more next year, across the board. And. very, very sadly, Sids is out of contract so we don't get a dime. Can't say I disagree with coppell on this, though. He could have sold, even as late as January, for about what you guesed, and decided a player who could help us succeed for half a season was worth more. I think Reading will make pds 5m more this season off position than expected, and sids gets at least some credit for that.
But yes, Reading are going to have to spend pds 15m to replace him and fortify for Europe, if they're going to improve on this year. Not sure tha'ts in the cards.
