so Lazio opens its defense of the prestigious Coppa this weekend ;)

Peruzzi has been healthy tho Caso has preferred Sereni in goal, a bit of controversy is brewing there...I'd guess Peruzzi gets a match this weekend and Negro will come back from oblivion also. Perhaps some more of the unkown south americans from transfer deadline day will finally play...and the youngster De Sousa who burst on the scene with a goal a month ago and hasnt played much since...

anyway its Cagliari-Lazio Sunday in sardinia....two-legs in third round.

Be interesting to see if any of the Primavera kids are included in the squad for Sunday. Lazio has a 100% record in the Primavera league after 5 games, with 17 goals for and 2 goals against.

The players called for this match:-

    Portieri: Casazza, Peruzzi, Sereni
Difensori: Couto, Lequi, Lopez, Negro, Oddo, Seric, Talamonti
Centrocampisti: Cesar, Dabo, A. Filippini, E. Filippini, Gonzalez, Liverani, Manfredini, Mea Vitali
Attaccanti: Di Canio, Inzaghi, Muzzi, Rocchi

Looks like all the regulars, aside from Pandev who played 90 minutes for Macedonia on Wednesday in their 2-0 qualifying loss to the Czech Republic.

we've seen two young strikers from the primavera in de sousa and delgado during the season but thats about it....todays lineup was:

    GK: Peruzzi
    Rb: Oddo
    CB: Talamonti, Lequi
    Lb: Oscar Lopez

    RW: A Fillipini
    CM: Liverani, E Fillipini
    LW: Cesar

    RF: Muzzi
    LF: Di Canio

1-1 late, A Filipini for Lazio, I think Cagliari has a lot of A players in there...

Caso is saving Dabo, Rocchi, Couto for the UEFA Cup match...I'm surprised Cesar is playing today.

ugh 2-1 loss, late PK for Zola off a Lequi foul....

horrific in close late miss from Inzaghi just before that, man he's useless...this sounded like another match where Caso used 3 different formations..

today was also supposed to be a day for a couple of the south americans to play but they didnt...Mea Vitali has played over 40 times for Venezuela but cant even get into a Coppa match...

    This was Cagliari lineup

    IEZZO
    ALVAREZ
    MALTAGLIATI
    LORIA
    AGOSTINI
    ABEIJON
    DELNEVO
    BRAMBILLA
    PERALTA (ZOLA approx. 70)
    LANGELLA
    BIANCHI

goals - Langella, Filippini, Zola (pen).

A good match, given the chances to score it could have been a draw.
The Lazio goal was mostly a gift from our defence though.
Langella's goal was fantastic, he started running from cagliari's midfield past 3 or 4 Lazio players and then Peruzzi was unable to deflect his powerful shot.

Gianfranco Zola's late penalty has given Cagliari the upper hand in their Coppa clash, but Lazio scored a crucial away goal.
Lazio must win in the January 12 second leg at the Olimpico, but that away goal could prove decisive.

    CAGLIARI-LAZIO 2-1 (1-0)

    Cagliari (4-3-3): Iezzo ; Alvarez , Maltagliati , Loria , Agostini ; Abeijon , Brambilla , Delnevo , Peralta (56' Zola ); Bianchi , Langella

    Lazio (4-4-2): Peruzzi ; Oddo , Talamonti , Lequi , O. Lopez ; E. Filippini , Liverani , A. Filippini , Di Canio (78' Seric ), Cesar (46' Inzaghi ), Muzzi (83' Negro )

    Referee: Dattilo from Locri.

    NOTE:
    Goals: 35' Langella (C); 60' A. Filippini (L), 82' Zola from a penalty kick (C).
    Corners: 4-3 for Cagliari.
Warnings: E. Filippini and Oddo from Lazio, Loria and Brambilla from Cagliari
    Sent Off: 79' Talamonti (L)
    Attendance: around 5000

the ratings from kataweb, if Liverani is going to keep struggling then we have no central midfielder to create offense through...hopefully we can get someone on loan in january...

I saw some rumor of Genoa wanting to swap Liverani for Cozza. Not sure how Cozza is doing this year (or how valid the rumor is), but he was always a solid performer at Reggina.

    :)

Liverani played one year in Cagliari's primavera then we lost him because someone thought he was not good enough to play serie a.

Also Cozza played for cagliari (96-97), I really liked him... but we had Fabian O'Neill who was better than him in that role....

Fabian must have been the most underachieving player in the world I guess, he is (was) pure class but his mind...

I loved watching O'Neill play at Cagliari - what a dominating presence he was. I'm really sorry he got sent to the graveyard of players' confidence at Juventus. :(

Liverani has struggled so badly I'd take Cozza for him, unfortunately his experience in relegation battles may come in handy for us...

I always liked fabian o'neill also....is he still playing anywhere?

Yes, I have to say this one was much worse than Di Canio's in the league a week or two ago.

thursday lazio will host Cagliari down 1-2 in the second leg of the coppa....

after leaving the uefa cup, here's hoping they can stay in this competition at least...defend the coppa!

some of the players that papadopulo has yet to use like Couto, Muzzi and Lequi will likely play...perhaps a Lazio debut for Bazzani??

I think Lazio will have little problems to advance... Lazio cares about coppa italia much more than Cagliari and Cagliari will probably rest many players for the game vs Juve.
Lazio still has a better team (overall) and they look at the top of their form.

Seeming to confirm sardus' prediction, Lazio has already gone ahead on a goal by Antonio Fillippini after 10 minutes of play. Lazio is now ahead in the tie as well, on away goals.

Lazio went up 2-0 on a second-half strike by Rocchi, but Cagliari equalized the tie through Conti with 10 minutes left. In extra time, Zola has put Cagliari ahead (that is, equalized 2-2 on the day) and practically ended things as now Lazio needs two goals.

ugh, we actually won todays match 3-2 with a late rocchi goal...but cagliari wins the 2-leg affair on away goals...

sounds like bazzani was decent on his debut till coming off before regulation time ended...

Again just like the uefa cup exit, it sucks but its probably for the best. The squad is still too thin for anything but the league.

What I didnt like is that Giannhichedda and Liverani played 120 minutes today, not great prep for sunday's match with palermo...
