Here are the first-round matchups for this year's Coppa Italia. This is not a true "draw", but the teams are seeded and matched up. These 64 teams will play down to 8 teams via a single-knockout tournament in August. Then the competition will resume at the Round of 16 (with the top 8 teams entering the competition) in November.

    Here's the full bracket:

Here are the full results from the first round of eliminations. Many games went to extra time, but only a few significant upsets. Only one of the 12 Serie A teams in action failed to advance - newly-promoted Serie C1 team Taranto (seeded #61) defeated newly-promoted Serie A team Catania (seeded #19). Other upsets had Monza (#48) beating Bari (#33), Venezia (#59) over Treviso (#22), and Cavese (#60) over Lecce (#21). Genoa over Spezia was an upset in name only as they were the 41st and 40th seeds, while #45 Cremonese over #36 Vicenza was the other mild surprise.

    Sansovino 0 Messina 1
    Grosseto 3 Piacenza 4
    Lazio 4 Rende 0
    Monza 1 Bari 0
    Novara 1 Mantova 2
    Modena 3 Teramo 0
    Fiorentina 3 Giarre 0
    Genoa 3 Spezia 2
    Cavese 2 Lecce 1
    Bologna 2 Cittadella 1 (aet)

    Gallipoli 0 Verona 1
    Venezia 1 Treviso 0
    Perugia 0 Arezzo 0 (3-4 on pks)
    Melfi 0 Udinese 4
    Avellino 1 Albinoleffe 2 (aet)
    Martina 0 Juventus 3
    Lucchese 0 Cesena 1 (aet)
    Cervia 0 Ascoli 6

All but one of the second elimination matches is set to be played tomorrow (Wed Aug 23) with Verona-Cagliari the only exception. It will be played on Thursday. And all but one will be played at the home field of the lower seed (as listed above), with Messina-Piacenza to be played at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome. Seems like Piacenza agreed to allow Messina to call the match a home game, and Messina had a homefield disqualification remaining from last spring's Messina-Empoli match when the home fans bombarded the field.

this is the biggest insult ever.

forcing lazio to have to qualify from the first round and ranking us lower then shite teams like chievo and parma.

whats even more disgudting is we ahve ot face inter in the round of 16, that theyve been buting players with reckless abandon so its almost impossible for us to beat them.

    god i hate inter.

I knew the numbers weren't adding up. FOUR more Serie A teams were ko'd, not three. Napoli beat Ascoli. That leaves 7 Serie A and 8 Serie B teams left in this phase, with one more to be determined.

very good, this competition may finally have some juice...you have big clubs needing to win the coppa as the only means into Europe and some A teams actually being upset like a real cup.

Yes, but it would still be better if they'd stick with this single-knockout format through the whole thing instead of going back to the home-and-home setup when the top 8 teams join the fray in November (another bad thing ... front-loading all the knockout drama in August then just stopping the competition for two months).

One Serie B team is guaranteed of making it to November, with the Modena-Genoa matchup, and whoever wins that match ought to stand a decent chance against Empoli. Hopefully, there will be at least one other surprise.

Two Serie B teams are guaranteed of making it to November, the winner of the Modena-Genoa game, and the winner of the Napoli-Juve game.

It's nice to see serie b teams playing well, hopefully Genoa, Juve, and Napol all get promoted this year.

Final result of the second turn:

    Verona 1 Cagliari 2

So it's 8 Serie A and 8 Serie B into the final elimination round.

Lots of emotion (and entertaining play) in today's final round of elimination matches. Oh, and 5 Serie B teams into the round of 16. Perhaps the league will learn something from this.

Napoli 3 Juventus 3 (aet, Napoli wins on pks)
Arezzo 1 Udinese 1 (Arezzo wins on pks)
    Bologna 2 Sampdoria 3
    Brescia 1 Cagliari 0
    Crotone 0 Reggina 1
    Genoa 3 Modena 1
    Messina 4 Lazio 3 (aet)
    Triestina 3 Atalanta 2

The Round of 16 (which isn't until November and switches to the boring home-and-home status quo):

    Messina vs Inter
    Genoa vs Empoli
    Sampdoria vs Palermo
    Reggina vs Chievo
    Brescia vs Milan
    Arezzo vs Livorno
    Napoli vs Parma
    Triestina vs Roma

The next round is Wednesday, and like SueB posted, it goes from single elimination to the traditional (and rather unexciting) two legged format.

    Messina vs Inter
    Genoa vs Empoli
    Sampdoria vs Palermo
    Reggina vs Chievo
    Brescia vs Milan
    Arezzo vs Livorno
    Napoli vs Parma
    Triestina vs Roma

RAI International doesn't seem to have the rights this year, so I don't think any of these games will be on TV.

    Results from today:

    Reggina-Chievo 2-2
    Milan-Brescia 4-2
    Empoli-Genoa 1-0
    Sampdoria-Palermo 1-0
    Arezzo-Livorno 2-1
    Triestina-Roma 1-2

Obviously the upset of the day is Arezzo defeating Livorno.

Maybe a foolish question, but if Napoli (or any Serie B side) win the Coppa, do they have the right to play in the UEFA Cup qualifying round even if they fail to achieve promotion to Serie A for next season?

Of course. It's the winner that has the spot in the Uefa cup.

Yeah, it's happened before around Europe. A couple of seasons ago Alemania Aachen won the German Cup and they were a second division side and didn't get promoted and played in the UEFA Cup the next season.

And Napoli don't even have to win. If they make the final and a team that is already qualified for Europe faces them, they get the UEFA Spot automatically.

True. Beira-Mar from Portugal was in the second tier when they played in the Uefa cup as they were the winner of the Portuguese cup in the previous season. That was four or five seasons ago.
