Re: COPA LIBERTADORES 2009-grp stage (r)

Ugh, the anxiety is settling in for Sport x Palmeiras. That is going to be one ugly game. I cannot believe they tape delayed it for 5 hours. I guess I'll have to find it streaming somewhere.

Sao Lourenco loses to Sao Luis. An Argie team is out of Copa Libertadores 2009.

Cruzeiro's bus got stuck in traffic. THe FOx guys were arguing as to whether it was imprudence on Cruzeiro's part or not. Apparently there were demonstrations on the highway.

Cruzeiro will not benefit from this. They'll have to get off the bus, change into game gear, adn rush onto the field.

and of course FOCKS wastes our time, forcing us to listen to these hacks instead of possibly switching to the other matches underway.

I don't know, it was kind of amusing watching Closs, Benedeto and that other dude with their matching, twenty-year-old beach bum haircuts.

Estudantes da Prata wins a convincing game over Cruzeiro, 4-0. Cruzeiro was never really in it. Their bus was late and I don’t know what happened on their way to La Plata, but I speculate it may have unnerved the players. They were nervous, and it showed; Estudantes, on the other hand, visibly wanted it more. They played more aggressively, fought for every football possession, double- and triple-teamed Cruzeiro’s ballhandlers, and forced Cruzeiro into mistakes. It was a terrible mistake by Marquinhos Paraná that allowed Verón to create the 2nd goal for his team. Cruzeiro never recovered, and Estudantes continued its incisive posture in the 2nd half. They again caught Cruzeiro’s defense not paying attention when they scored the 3rd goal, and the 4th goal was embarrassing for the Brazilian team.

Cruzeiro’s 19-match unbeaten streak this season ended ignominiously. They didn’t concentrate enough and Estudantes took advantage.

The Brazilians are still on top of this group, and they should win their final match, a home game vs. Deportivo Quito. Estudantes, who was struggling early on, got rid of Leonardo Astrada and they have won their last two games, at home, by 4-0. The La Plata team is definitely resurgent and look like a lock in the round of 16 along with their rivals tonight.

Unfortunately, Sport Recife vs. Palmeiras was not broadcast, but Palmeiras won and ended another Brazilian team’s long unbeaten streak – on away turf. First-round elimination would be catastrophic for Palmeiras, and they will demonstrate this when they host Sport Recife at Parque Antárctica next week. Sport Recife will be up to the challenge, but Palmeiras will probably face this as the most important game in many years. I think they’ll pull it off – I can’t see a team led by Vanderlei Luxemburgo and with this combination of talented youths and veterans losing a second straight Libertadores game at home.

10-man São Lourenço beaten and eliminated from the tournament by 10-man São Luís in Mexico. An Argentine team has already crashed and burned; looks like Lanús may follow suit, and it’s too bad, because I for one was hoping for a rematch of last year’s playoff matchup between São Lourenço and Rio da Prata. If the latter doesn’t improve its game, we may not see Rio da Prata play in the round of 16 at all.

    La "U" ya clasifico, estamos?
It would be really hard for San Luis to beat La Libertad in Paraguay. Specially when Libertad wishes to accumulate as many points as possible to play against the easiest team in Octavos de Final.

Angel Russo, has quit as coach of San Lorenzo (too bad b/c I like SL the most in Argentina).

I think the most interesting group at the moment is Group 1. I think Palmeiras will actually end 2nd in the group after Sport Recife.

The worst team in la Copa is Aurora de Bolivia. 0 points, -10 goals. =)

Cruzeiro didn't play very weel and lost. Sport lost too...dammit. Now Palmeiras still have chance.

Today is the game that matters: São Paulo x Defensor. Over 38.990 tickets sold. The limit is 64.000, but I think it won't sold out. Maybe 50.000 tonight.

    Morumbi will be on fire.

I don't get why many teams don't stay in La Plata directly rather than staying in Buenos Aires and then heading to La Plata, you're bound to have delays on the way(done mostly by the teams from Buenos Aires or the southern zone). Also today and tomorrow are holidays in Argentina there's a lot of tourism movement, that may have caused their delay.

Anyway, San Lorenzo lost and is out with the win San Luis may still have a chance(a draw would've eliminated both them and would've given Universitario a ticket to the round of 16). Estudiantes won and has a decent shot of making it to the round of 16. River tied and things get more complicated(nearly impossible?).

It depends the way you look at it: if San Martin lose to Nacional (URU) next round, and River wins their remaining two games, we're through. I don't see it as an impossible achievement, and I actually think it's possible.

Ah, then there's still a chance they make it through. But if San Martín wins River is out?

São Paulo did not play well at all in the first half. It was erratic and disjointed, and Defensor Sporting was not intimidated by having to face the current Brazilian champions on their turf.

Rogério Ceni committed an uncharacteristic gaffe, and the Uruguayans held their own into the 2nd half. Borges clutched, though, especially with that second goal. The Defensor Sporting defenders made a terrible error, but that's the nature of this sport.

SPFC scoring was a matter of time. They were pressing Defensor, which had to repeatedly foul my team's players, and we got two strikes against the woodwork.

My team's doing well. It won 3 and drew one - their first game at home, which they should have won. They will have to visit DIM in Colombia in mid-April and they close off their first-round play by hosting America de Cali, whom they easily defeated 1-3 in Cali.

And, SPFC has now assured itself a berth in the round of 16.

Gremio, Sport, Palmeiras, and Cruzeiro also representing Brazil this year. I hope all of them make it through (and I think Gremio and Cruzeiro are shoe-ins to the round of 16), whereas I don't think both Sport and Palmeiras will make it. Then again, you never know.

Defensor took an alternative team to Brazil today.
They were reserving their main players for the weekend.
They currently lead the Uruguayo tournament and they'll be mainly focusing on that.

Nope. If San Martin wins vs. Nacional (URU) and River win their last two games (vs. Nacional (PAR) and San Martin), then River and San Martin would be tied for second place with 10 points and goal difference would have to be used to determine who advances. Technically speaking, if the same scenario happens, but Nacional also loses their remaining two games, then all three teams would be tied in the first place spot.

Keep in mind that for now the goal difference is playing against River, since we lost 3-0 to Nacional in Montevideo. :(
