The biggest prize in Brazilian football, 2024 edition. https://ge.globo.com/futebol/copa-d...sil-2024-veja-quais-serao-os-confrontos.ghtml The draw was held today, with 80 teams to play Round 1. Round 2 will be the 40 winners. Round 3 will add the 12 remaining teams that get a bye to the 20 winners. The 12 teams that will join in Round 3 are: Palmeiras, São Paulo, Red Bull Bragantino, Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, Grêmio, Atlético-MG, Athletico-PR, Goiás, Ceará, Vitória Some big teams and their matchups are: Cianorte-PR x Corinthians (winner plays the winner of the match below) Olaria-RJ x São Bernardo-SP Fluminense-PI x Fortaleza Manauara-AM x Retrô-PE ASA-AL x Internacional Itabuna-BA x Nova Iguaçu-RJ Sousa-PB x Cruzeiro Petrolina-PE x Cascavel-PR Marcílio Dias-SC x Vasco Água Santa-SP x Jacuipense-BA Notably, Santos did not qualify. Round 1 will be played midweek in the last two weeks of February (21, 28)
Some matches will be available live for free on ge today: https://ge.globo.com/futebol/copa-d...e-graca-nesta-quarta-feira-veja-a-lista.ghtml Not sure if this will be available outside of Brazil, but this are some of the smaller team matchups like Audax-RJ x Portuguesa-RJ Independente x Amazonas São Luiz x Ituano among others. The earliest game of the round has begun already. The bigger name teams that are in the first round play tomorrow and Thursday (including Cruzeiro, Corinthians, Bahia, Vasco).
Cruzeiro was just knocked out by Sousa (Paraíba) with a scoreline of 2 x 0. The game was goalless until the last few mins with Cruzeiro going through when Sousa scored a goal and then another one which was a screamer in injury time. The game was played in a pitch that was water logged from the rain (at least from the last few mins I saw when the goals were scored). Sousa are in the D Division of the national league.
Obviously Cruzeiro's priority this year is to stay in Serie A, but for Copa do Brasil to fail to get to round 3 when the other big teams join in is a huge upset. The second round draw is already known, and set up so the few big teams at this stage don't run into each other. Their second round match-up would have been against the winner of Petrolina x Cascável. At any rate, I wonder if it's much of a financial shortfall. Winning the final is the biggest financial prize, but I don't know what the clubs get for rounds 1 and 2. Until this result, I guess Porto Velho beating Remo was the biggest "upset" so far. Most of the other Serie A teams in round 1 haven't played yet. They either play tomorrow or next week.
In terms of prize money yeah, the prize jumps are in the SF and Final. But they do lose stadium attendance money if they were to play subsequent rounds at home. That can add up if you're in a financial hole.
Corinthians got an easy win away from home. Coritiba were eliminated, so Cruzeiro has company in not being the only bigger team eliminated early. But Coritiba are Serie B this year, so not quite as huge an upset. Vasco, Fortaleza, Internacional are the biggest teams left to debut in round 1, they all play next week.
Vasco were on the verge of elimination tonight, they were down 3x2 to Agua Santa and tied 3x3 in injury time. They won on PKs (second round of Copa do Brasil, draws go straight to PKs). More Copa do Brasil matches this week and next. Then there's a break and the 3rd round will be played in May. 3rd round draw date TBD.
Inter beat Nova Iguaçu today to qualify for the next round. Nova Iguaçu are actually resting players to focus on the Carioca this weekend. Corinthians plays tomorrow and so does Fortaleza, those are the two biggest clubs on the last day of matches.
Corinthians and Fortaleza made it. Fortaleza had to go to penalties to win, after a 0x0 match. Here are the 32 remaining teams: Pot 1: Flamengo Palmeiras São Paulo Athletico Paranaense Atlético Mineiro Corinthians Fluminense Grêmio Fortaleza Internacional Bahia Botafogo Bragantino Atlético Goianiense Ceará Cuiabá Pot 2: Goiás Vasco da Gama Juventude Sport CRB Vitória Criciúma Sampaio Corrêa Operário-PR Botafogo-SP Brusque Ypiranga de Erechim América de Natal Amazonas Sousa Águia de Marabá
The draw for the next round (starting May 1) was done today: https://ge.globo.com/futebol/copa-d...024-veja-os-confrontos-da-terceira-fase.ghtml Operário-PR x Grêmio Bahia x Criciúma Sampaio Corrêa-MA x Fluminense Sousa-PB x Red Bull Bragantino Goiás x Cuiabá Botafogo x Vitória Fortaleza x Vasco Flamengo x Amazonas Águia de Marabá x São Paulo Palmeiras x Botafogo-SP Ypiranga-RS x Athletico-PR Internacional x Juventude CRB x Ceará América-RN x Corinthians Brusque-SC x Atlético-GO Atlético-MG x Sport
Palmeiras 2 x 1 Botafogo Palmeiras almost let a win get away. estevão scored the winner in the last play of the game. Of note, endrick almost scored a really nice goal hitting the inside of the post. But the star of the game was estevão. This kid is doing really good. He has a really quick first step. This is one to look out for in the near future. Will probably be sold soon. Here is a nice play with him and endrick that almost lead to a goal. I like how you didn't specify which Botafogo! Flamengo won but because it was just 1x0 and uninspiring it doesn't really help break the current slump in the eyes of fans and pundits. The most notable part of the match was the return of Gabigol as his suspension was suspended pending a final judgment. Pedro scored but Gabigol got plenty of love just for coming on in the second half.
Looks like most of the big teams are through to the next round, pending only the postponed matches (Gremio x Operario, CAP x Ypiranga and both legs of Inter x Juventude). Flamengo and Palmeiras did the bare minimum. Sao Paulo with the widest margin of victory I think (up 2x0 now, after a 3x1 first leg). Probably the biggest match-up was the most even, with Vasco 3x3 Fortaleza after a 0x0 draw in Fortaleza, resulting in penalties that Vasco won. So Fortaleza easily the biggest elimination of this round. I'm not sure when the postponed matches will be played and if the draw for round 4 will happen before or after those are concluded.
With the conclusion of the make-up matches, the draw for the Round of 16 (oitavas) will be tomorrow: https://ge.globo.com/futebol/copa-d...copa-do-brasil-2024-veja-data-e-horario.ghtml There is no restriction on who can face who and the matches will be played around July 31 and August 7. The qualified teams, 14 from Serie A and 2 from Serie B, are: Athletico-PR Atlético-GO Atlético-MG Bahia Botafogo Corinthians CRB Flamengo Fluminense Grêmio Goiás Juventude Palmeiras Red Bull Bragantino São Paulo Vasco
Would be wild if we got another Botafogo x Palmeiras draw... just putting that out there now, before it happens. Of course, CAP x Flamengo would be a meme. And it would also be funny if somehow the 2 Serie B teams draw each other. But there are plenty of tough possible matchups, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Atl-MG, Bahia, Botafogo probably all praying they don't run into each other yet.
With the tournament now into the last 16, I'm stickying this thread. Copa do Brasil matches are on Amazon Prime. Can anyone in the US confirm if they can watch in the US as well?
I am guessing here ... but I think it's only Brazilian Amazon Prime subscribers. Livesoccertv doesn't have any US coverage listed.
If you google it says it is, but it seems to me one of those AI responses that isn't verified by a human, but who knows. Well, we didn't get Palmeiras x Botafogo... we got Flamengo x Palmeiras as the first teams drawn... https://ge.globo.com/futebol/copa-d...-da-copa-do-brasil-2024-veja-confrontos.ghtml Here are the match-ups: Flamengo x Palmeiras Atlético-GO x Vasco Bragantino x Athletico-PR Goiás x São Paulo CRB x Atlético-MG Botafogo x Bahia Grêmio x Corinthians Juventude x Fluminense
Our sequence of games coming up due to this draw ... Flamengo - CdB Inter (away) - Brasileiro Flamengo - CdB 2nd leg Flamengo - Brasileiro Botafogo - Liberta São Paulo - Brasileiro Botafgo - Liberta 2nd leg This is gonna be brutal.
