I would find it odd if Cooper spends the season (or even 1/2) in reserves....he's kindof beyond that (no?) and should be loaned for experience (and this time, pick a place where he plays)...

He doesn't have much of a future at ManUtd but it could be argued that a year in their reserves would be better for his career than another year like he had last season. If I were him I'd be very cautious about going on loan again.

    Think about it.

Suppose he goes on loan this season to a lower level club and doesn't light it up. After the loan is up he will be very close to being out of contract at ManUtd, and he will not have built up a sterling reputation from his loans, which will make it pretty hard for him to get another gig.

If he plays out his contract in the reserves there will be plenty of clubs interested in looking at him when he's released...that's just the way it is for released Manchester United reserve players.

I think this is an intelligent, thought out post. Not saying I agree with it but it is well put.
Let us look at the time line for Cooper at Man U...he signed in August 2003 but due to some confusion over "the transfer window" and other things didn't actually play his first game for the reserves until late October/early November....he scored 15 goals (13 for the reserves, 2 for the U19's ) in slightly more than half a season. At the start of the 2004/2005 season he scored the winning goal in Ireland in a pre season friendly at Roy Keanes's first club (Keane played in that game ) then scored the opening goal in the reserves first game vs Nottingham Forest. Due to his impending loan to Academica he was a late scratch from the squad who visited the USA.

While the Academica situation didn't work out for him too well, he did play in 8 games in the Portuguese Superliga..... As I have stated in earlier threads there are few more difficult situations in soccer than that of playing as a single striker in a not very good side.....Cooper then returned to Man U in January 2005 and was immediately sent out to Oldham on loan and played the last 25 mins in the fourth round F.A. Cup game with Bolton. He then scored 3 goals in 5 starts, before the coach was fired, a new one brought in and Cooper injured his knee and returned to Man U for treatment for the last month of the season. In the past 23 months Cooper has actually been at Man U for about 7 months. I believe he will get a chance this season, although with the talent ahead of him he will have to wait for that chance.

There are more scouts from other English clubs that watch Man U reserve games than watch games for any other prem league reserve outfits. I still believe Cooper has a chance at Manchester United but regardless of what happens there he has a great chance of making a successful career for himself in England.

For now and forever more the first part of his resume will always read....Signed three year, full professional contract with MANCHESTER UNITED.......not bad on anyone's resume....

If Manchester United didnt beleive he had a future, they would of released him. I also believe he has a bright future in England, but hopefully in the premiere league.

this is a huge point for this young man. he's got to know and his dad must be ringing it in his ears that young men are released out of their contracts every off season or not re-signed (see karby and simek who are well thought of on these boards).

that manu keeps him in spite of what i would call last season's failures must mean that they still have high hopes for him. i understand (i think from england66 or other posters) that he has been told to work on his aerial skill so he needs to get down to business and add dominance in the air to what england66 says are excellent foot skills.

Kenny Cooper needs to be loaned out to Southampton and have Harry Redknapp pull a Crouch on him. Harry could develop Kenny Cooper into a real winner.

Kenny was the first - before Spector, Eagles or Richardson - of his crew to be loaned to a major Euro soccer league club. That implied very high hopes for him.

So, even if he has a year left on his deal, if I am ManU, I'd make him an extention offer. I am sure $250K or so per year - peanuts for the team - would tie him up for another year or two.

Agree, some people don't like Crouch but i'd love to have a Crouch clone right now and even more once we no longer have Mcbride.

Well, the guy writing that article certainly smells something fishy, or he wouldn't be hinting that Cooper would possibly play for FC Dallas. Or it could just high, high hopes, considering that Johnson has been out for so long.

Oooh, that sounds brutal. What would they do, put him on the rack and stretch him out til he's 6'7"?

As far as the Dallas speculation goes - would Dallas really have room for him on their roster? We know EJ is hurt but he will be back eventually and Ruiz, Mina and Thompson seem to offer more depth than most MLS teams would have. Would Cooper be available on loan? MLS' flexible personnel "rules" used to discourage that. And, also, would Dallas be able to offer Cooper reasonable compensation under the salary cap?

I'm sure MLS could make it work, particularly if the likely eventual Eddie Johnson sale is factored in. Under the rules of Calvinball, would anyone (except for some FCD fans who aren't big on Cooper) object if Cooper got signed to play in his hometown under a salary cap waiver until the near-certain Johnson sale? He could be good for the league.

Salary cap waiver, Kenny Cooper has shown nothing to prove that he is worth more than 50k a year of salary in the MLS.

....Kenny Cooper is in Manchester training at Carrington....he is most certainly NOT in Dallas ( he left Dallas over three weeks ago having been in town for the summer )....Man U reserves are playing Walsall first team at Walsall this saturday....Cooper is getting ready for that game...
