I was wondering - since finding out that Comcast still has no bandwidth in my area of SF to provide and PPV Sports packages, if we could convince one local SF soccer friendly establishment to order the shootout (season for commercial is only $100 - which we could easily take up a collection, or reimburse by way of food, drink, merriment). Anyone know any purveyors of these establishments, and would like to help, it would really be appreciated by me and those that have no access to dish, cable, etc. james
i was talking about this with my friend before the game last night. where do quakes fans in sf usually watch away games? it would be great to have a place to watch games on saturdays.
I was thinking maybe Kezar Pub or Mad Dog considering the majority of the MLS season is in the EURO offseason. Does anyone know anyone at these two places? james
i heard about the boathouse too. but that is sort of out of the way. i don't think many buses go out to lake merced. i think kezar might be a possibility. i've seen a couple of people watching cricket in there on a saturday. so, maybe they'd be willing to let people watch some quakes in there.
This is the problem with ordering the shootout package. I have no incentive to enjoy the comraderie with my fellow Quake fans. On the other hand, soccer in my jammies is a wonderful thing.
unfortunately i don't know anyone at kezar and i don't really go there that much. maybe i'll go there for the first quakes away game.
Kezar, is the best bet, but I wouldn't count on it. SF just doesn't seem to have an MLS friendly Pub. I do think Kezar would be interested but I think MLS would be at the bottem of their list, after Euro football, and all other big league American sports. It would be nice to have a place where MLS got some respect. It might be worth trying a place like Kate O'Briens on Howard, a place not associated with sports viewing already, who might make MLS a priority.
Hi James et al: I don't know the Kezar people personally, but every time I've called in the past they've been very accommodating. No need to worry about attitude, they're always very nice. Just be conscious of tying them up on the phone when they're crowded, as they sometimes are. Try them midday on a weekday. -Barrett
Just wanted to put in my .02 cents and say well done for coming down from Frisco for all the home matches. 40 plus miles one way is a slog but you guys make the effort.I tip my hat to you PS: Barrett, where were you wednesday?
I haven't been there in years but the Blarneystone used to show English football. I'm sure if someone calls the owner manager they'll be receptive to the idea. A better option though would probably be Mad Dog. The clientel used to be skins and scooter people a few years back when they used to have reggae nights, I don't know about now adays. Good luck
A friend of mine had invited me to a dinner at his club a while back and the night happened to be Wednesday. It was the "French Athletic Club" in SF. As you might imagine, there weren't a lot of French or a lot of athletes. It is a men's club that has been in SF since early in the 1900s. And there were at least 4 generations of members to prove it. I was sitting with guys who played soccer in the SF leagues more than 60 years ago! And guys who were in D-Day at Normandy. Pretty unexpected and pretty cool. A surreal little slice of America. (They began the evening with a rousing rendition of "God Bless America," even -- especially -- the old guys with French accents.) One thing about driving to the Quakes games from SF: The pregame tailgate really makes a huge difference. If any of you other SFers haven't partaken yet -- the ClubQuake tailgate gets started around 3:30 in the grass parking lot for a 7 pm game. It really makes the drive down a whole lot more pleasant. Thank God all the games are on Saturday this year.
Don't call it Frisco. If you're from LA and dumb your allowed to say "San Fran", but even they don't say Frisco.
There's a pretty good sports bar at the corner of Pierce and Lombard. It seems pretty new, but it has a ton of screens and seemingly cool proprietors. If the Marina is reasonably central for this crew, I can talk to the owners.
The Kezar is probably more inclined to show MLS that the Dog. The Dog has been under new management for the last 8 months or so and it seems alot has changed (including the decor). even alot of Saturday Morning premier league games seem far less attended than before. They've only recently allowed dj's and live bands back in. I personnaly prefer Kezer for watching any US National Team or MLS. I'm much less likely to get in a fight with some condecensing British prick
