http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/10/20/convey-says-he-wont-be-returning-quakes-2012 Will he stay in MLS or try Europe or Mexico, Latin America? I think he is still very talented. I think deserves a USMNT call up, but SJ is a mess and its good players are calling them out.
The player had the "assist" on the own-goal that helped secure the USA's group stage draw with the eventual World Cup champion in 2006. He should still be able to parlay that into some meaningful professional football for a few more years.
Well, one good player has. Convey had a great year in 2010. This year he was forced into playing left back when Ramiro Corrales was injured. He played well there, even earning an All-Star selection at that spot. The Quakes then realized that they can't pay $336,000 a year for a left back and told him he would need to take a substantial pay cut (75%) if he wanted to play here next year. Convey was insulted by the offer and has been in the doghouse ever since. Some people have said that Convey is "un-coachable", but, when given the opportunity to play at his preferred left mid position he was great. He also played well at left back, but, supposedly was privately critical of the decision and was told he was undermining Yallop's authority, even though any criticism had been kept in house and not aired publicly. Clearly, the Quakes feel they can do more with his $336,00 salary and this was their way of getting rid of him.
They both signed 4-year contract extensions at the end of last year, so, likely they are sticking around. And so far, nearly all fan comment on the Convey situation has been supportive of Bobby, and critical of Yallop and Doyle. And I should add, that in 2008 Ronnie O'Brien had a great year for the Quakes, but, then was asked to take a huge pay cut the next year. He said screw you, (and decided to retire instead). History is kind of repeating itself again in San Jose.
So, what do we think will happen here? Will the quakes trade his rights to a team willing to pick up the option or renegotiate for a lower cost? Will he go through the reentry draft? Or will he try for overseas?
Apparently he's been told that the team won't pick up his option, so that would put him in the re-entry draft (where a selecting team would have to pick up his option), unless he's taken in the expansion draft before that.
How is he uncoachable? He left with great graces from DC... He left Reading due to his injuries... The only problems is some bad blood with Bob Bradley and Now Yallop. Convey has been SJ better players and to have him take a 75% pay cut is ridiculous... Convey deserves the salary he got.. Let me also say given SJ track record for bloopers: Giovanni, Eduardo, the Ecuadorian guy they paid for and was not fit... I'll take Convey's word on this one.
When has this happened before? I've followed Bobby pretty closely, since I'm a DC fan, and I can't recall him having a "falling out" with Coppell. I know he didn't at DC. Your post strikes me as the kind of casual drive by character assassination on bigsoccer that drives me nuts.
The bigger problems are Yallop and Doyle and the overall lack of talent on the team. I will miss Convey. Best wishes to him and I hope the Quakes get some compensation (unless his contract has run its course).
Bradley. Who he has openly questioned in the press, etc. I also heard him personally talk shit about Landon Donovan when interviewed on world soccer daily a few years back (when at Reading). He just seems like a total dick, and it helped submarine his national team career.
Not to pick on you SD, but our boy Bobby has had a bit of a reputation of thinking incredibly highly of himself since his youth days around Philly. Yes, athletes do tend to think like this, but BC was never shy about letting folks know just how good he was. Whether that makes an individual uncoachable or not is one thing, but it does make you a target. That's sports. Bobby always speaks very highly of Bobby.
By MLS standards that's debatable, but SJ hasn't done all that great with their foreign guys...agree there.
Be aware that we are essentially getting one side of the story here. But in any case, if you are Quakes management, would you want to keep paying the guy nearly 2x the salary of anyone else on the team? I thought he played well from 2010 onwards (though not very good in 2009) but in any case I don't think his performance warrants his salary, especially when you consider that he is somewhat injury prone. What I would do is offer him a contract at a reduced salary - maybe in the low 200k's. This is apparently what they did (though they may have gone significantly lower than that). If he's not good with that, then they part ways and that's the business of sport. Too bad it didn't work out to a happier ending. And it's not like it was all unhappy. Last year it was all smiles, and Yallop was talking up Convey to Bradley, etc. It just ended kind of badly when it came time for both sides to reconcile his value. And just want to add, to Convey's credit: IMO he is the owner of the greatest single game playoff performance in Quakes history, with his practically one-man dismantling of NY last year (2 goals and an assist).
I can think of a few better ones... ...and TR was defending him like a high school player. That doesn't hurt.
I remember Landon having huge games like the famous LA melt down in 2003, and also that game against Miami in I think 2001 that were pretty memorable.
Donovan also had 2 goals against Chicago in MLS Cup 2003, but Convey figured in all three of the Quakes goals against NY and was generally a menace all game long on both sides of the ball. Besides Donovan's name has been all but erased from the Quakes history books, so he doesn't count anyway.
Convey did not have a great first year here in 2009, but, if you remember, Yallop got it in his mind that he could turn Convey into an a-mid, a position he didn't have experience at. When he was moved outside in 2010 he had a banner year. Regarding the salary, I believe it was Convey himself who said he was offered a 75% reduction.
