Current United players Bobby Convey, Ben Olsen, Nick Rimando, and (for a bit longer) Eddie Pope have been called by Bruce Arena into the January 4th-16th U.S. camp in preparation of the January 18th friendly with Canada.

Also of note to United fans, Tony Sanneh will continue his rehab by working with the team, as will Chris Armas.

    Well how bout that?

I wonder how sormun feels about Convey being called in?

Bruce Arena must not know what the hell he is doing if Convey gets a call up.. After all, he's only A-League quality...

Congrats to all, especially Convey. I don't know which is more interesting, the fact that Convey is called in or that Chris Armas is practicing with the team. I wonder if he is the embargoed player Chris Bergin refers to that would be coming to DC?

As for Convey, there is continual speculation that he's being looked at for left back, and I stand firm that he is not being considered seriously for that position. I'm curious where he plays in camp and the game, if he does play, and I expect him to do so.

Convey and Olsen are definites with Arena...they'll perform differently under Arena because he knows the game more than all of us put together in a lifetime. He's had his mistakes like keeping Agoos around a bit too long but then we all know that he was only doing the right thing (thank god that battery hit Agoos' ankle against Poland though). He's also succeeded greatly and don't forsee him to put out a crappy side.
Nonetheless, Convey will develop to a better player under him just like Albright would have been the promise he was to be. Not really sure about left back, he's got good defensive skills, but not big enough for the position...though he could be used in a R. Carlos type of role where he sneaks up to offer an outside offensive option, if that's what Arena is looking for...then I guess it makes sense to try that.
However, not really sure about Rimando, he's a good club keeper, not really crazy about him at the national level. Can anyone remember Campos? he just doesn't have the body of a Keller, Friedel, A. Brown (he's someone I'd wanna have in the net), and Howard.

    cheers

    Why Brian McBride over Santino??

For some experience up top you've already got Mathis and while I wouldn't expect Tino to play, the opportunity to work at camp would be more beneficial to the 18-year old than for McBride.

And the odds of McBride being hurt in camp (or opening a can of soup, or bending over to pick up a Scrabble tile, or sneezing, or breathing) are too steep to risk.

Then again, Santino has been somewhat fragile lately also, I guess. Maybe we don't want Santino learning from McBride. :)

McBride being there probably benefits the kids more than it does McBride. It makes sense to have some highly-capped guys around for the kids to work with and/or against. If Arena wants to see what his young defenders have got, having Mathis and McBride coming at them all week might tell him as much as how they perform on the field against Canada.
