Though I applaud your efforts, it's a waste of time..

As much as it pains me to say it, soccer doesn't do anything for ratings on ESPN.. That is why the Champions League is no longer going to be on ESPN after this session..

Believe it or not, the ratings for soccer are among the worst on the network, worse than Strongman, worse than Aerobics...

Be nice, everybody. It's a newbie.

For the record, Nolan, massive Email campaigns have been tried before, orchestrated from Bigsoccer, and ESPN doesn't seem to read said Emails. And if one person sends enough Emails to them, the network will just block reception of subsequent emails.

Want more soccer on ESPN? Get more people to watch soccer when they put it on. When ratings increase, we'll get more soccer.

  5. Yes, he is a newbie, BUT, his heart is in the right place! You can't blame him for lack of effort.

Sad but true; I guess the masses find it a lot easier to view a sporting activity that requires 0% usage of brain power.

So I have an idea: Let's call USSoccer and tell them to change the rules of soccer in the US: we'll eliminate all players BUT the goal keepers, and have them take turns kicking the ball from one end of the field to the other; the keeper scoring the most goals after 90 minutes, wins the game!!!
I think that should simplify the game enough to make it more appealling to the masses!!

ESPN ratings for soccer suck because they can't do a decent job of presenting the sport. The American announcers are horrible and the English accents by other announcers are more than most people can stomach.

Next thing that will happen is that this thread will turn into a "Ritchie Williams sucks!!!!" thread...

Anyway - BUMP - I sent in my email asking for more UEFA and Champion's League matches. I hate it when ESPN is showing me "Dundee United vs. Galtassary" as the game of the quarter and the last thing the announcer says as the game goes off the air" And now for our international audience, Manchester United vs. Real Madrid" (or something like that)

I hadn't written ESPN lately so just sent them a note.

If you're having trouble finding words. You might try something like this.

"I want to thank you for your continuing coverage of soccer. I've been a big soccer fan ever since I discovered soccer in college (1966). I'm enjoying the Europe Champions League coverage, and am looking forward to the MLS coverage in April.

Please include more soccer in your SportsCenter Coverage, and bring back MLS 2Night - the 30 minute weekly highlight show you had on in 2001."

Sounds like Tim Howard will be the league's top player, based upon his Argentina and Jamaica performances.

ESPN is for crap when it comes to soccer. We need a soccer only network that is
    A) in english
    b) not Fox Sports World
    c) on basic cable like the gay ass Golf Channel

    Toodles.

PS, Nolan = Super Newbee of the Year

A better idea would be to contact ESPN and ask for highlights on SportsCenter of MLS games. Gotta start small.

The best idea would be to get more of your friends hooked on watching soccer on TV. Eventually we have to start pushing the ratings up. And lying to Arbitron or Neilson won't do it.

If Richie Williams sucks, well how much does he suck?

    Compared to what?

    Compared to whom?

    More than Mose Malone?

    Less than Steve Spurrier?

    How much?

Come on, Andy. Haven't you heard?

    1) There's a conspiracy against soccer in the US, and its headquartered in Bristol, Connecticut.

    2) The Arbitron and Neilson ratings are rigged against soccer.

    3) And besides, the ratings will never go up because ESPN does such a bad job showing soccer, and if the ratings started to improve, they'd surely just do a poorer job to chase away viewers.

Seriously, if you want to do a constructive letter writing campaign (don't kid yourself: no one even marginally important at ESPN reads Emails): let the companies who support MLS and USSF know that you appreciate their support. That will likely do more in the long run than whining to ESPN and begging them to lose money on our behalf.

Would it be good to write MLS and USSF to ask what would be the best way for us to campaign for more coverage?

    Anyone have the addresses?

Wasn't this the title of the first post ever on BigSoccer?

I remember those days way back in the 20th century.

Nolan you are barking at the WRONG TREE

Nolan...I really aplaud your efforts ...but 85 % of the problem is not ESPN! soccer problems on the GOOD OL' USA is that is getting so BIG, SO FAST and the people in USSF does not have the remote idea on what to do NOW ....just check this fact ....LANDON DONOVAN WAS SNATCH BY A FOREING SOCCER TEAM AND SOLD BACK TO US.....this is for you to have an idea of how naive soccer people are in this country .....ON FEW WORDS : SOCCER IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF SOCCER MOMS AND DADS WITH A "IDIOTS GUIDE TO RUN SOCCER IN USA" (1994 EDITION)

The people that we have to talk about soccer on TV are eating their nails at USSF, we have to convince them that is a better investment to have a weekly SOCCER HIGHLIGH PROGRAM on a regular schedule than to PAID NBC/ESPN to broadcast a full friendly game.....
