Old?.....considering that the NYT publish a Casey article every second day this is really old. ;-) I am just curious what they write about Casey even if the article has been published 4 weeks ago.
Unfortunately, I don't really remember that much about the article, so I can't answer your original question. (Jack Bell covers soccer every Tuesday in the New York Times and often focuses on Yanks Abroad.)
The article does not say much guys. Just a little blurb of praise from Arena. "I think Conor Casey played very well against Poland," Coach Bruce Arena said in an e-mail message, speaking about the first victory for the United States in Europe since April 22, 1998, a span of 12 games. "He made himself available for 90 minutes for his teammates. His ability to show and hold the ball allowed our team to get forward and create chances." the other small portion is basic bio stuff already known.
Jack tends to write for the edification of the unitiated, and to focus on stories that will grab some attention. He's not usually going to write anything that will surprise someone who frequents the Yanks Abroad board. I'm thrilled that's he's been able to achieve regular space in the Times sports section for soccer - he does a great job of commenting on the headline news of the week and pumping up interest in a few different things for the non-hardcore soccer fan. But he's not likely to have blazingly original commentary for anyone who goes out of their way to learn such things.
I figure this is as good a thread as any to ask the following: I recall many people questioning Bruce Arena's callup of Casey for last week's US-Mexico game b/c he (Casey) would have to fly in from Germany mid-week and then return to Germany for a weekend game. However, I did not see a thread for Karlsruhe on the YA boards over the weekend. Didn't his team play?
i admit he does go with the euro outlook a bit much... but that's his choice... and it's cool to see someone do it... but i beg to differ when saying he doesn't write anything that will surprise anyone... jack often drops kernels of information that we only get from him... then others pick up on it he's incredibly good about making it look nondescript though, so it is often missed... he's popped up more new news than many writers i can think of... and he does it so freaking quietly take tomorrow's article for instance... ricardo clark for right back...
