"On paper, the Group of Death in the FIFA Under-20 World Youth Championships looks more like the Group of Mediocrity."

This doesn't make sense...wouldn't you expect a tough group to have most teams tightly packed and even???

Otherwise, a nice job. Interesting to hear that Johnson is attracting attention. He really has a chance to shine, along with the rest of the team tomorrow.

    Thanks for the link.

rongen is an idiot... <commenting on adu>

at least the 19 year old johnson sees what adu brings to the field, too bad the damn "coach" doesn't see it that way...

"The squad dominated in the same fashion for the last 20 or so minutes against Germany, scoring one goal and creating numerous other chances. It's during those times that Eddie Johnson is running by defenders and on to through balls, Bobby Convey is pulling the strings in the midfield and Santino Quaranta and Justin Mapp are dominating the flanks and serving in dangerous balls."

Quaranta played in the last 20 or so minutes and dominated the flanks!!!!!!! According to this article, Whitbread is also 6'3". He is the shortest 6'3" guy that I have ever seen. Connolly also thought that Whitbread spent his whole life in England after his move from this country. Didn't we learn from here that he lived in Singapore for a while who his father coached there?

    D.C. give or take
I think Whitbread really is 6'3", maybe 6'2", that's what it has listed on the official Liverpool FC website I think.

And I don't know if we are all too harsh on Quaranta because are expectations for him are so high, but many non-US supporters have told me, and I have also read from non-US publications, that Quaranta has been somewhat impressive so far, especially vs. Germany.

Your Whitbread-Singapore thing is right though.

I think the point was just that he hasn't lived in the US.

I usually accept that I may be wrong on player assessments but I would find it hard to believe that anyone would classify Q's performances in either game as anything but poor. And that's putting expectations aside as most of us have already had our expectations lowered by his uneven, injury-plagued performances in DC.

I hope he turns it around soon but right now, he is the weakest player on the team IMHO.
