When a national gov't imposes night curfew in its capital city, then it is clear that any sports/entertainment event must be canceled. Men's first division games have stopped since September 30th. Last cup game was on Oct 2nd. Conmebol must proceed and let each club return home. It would be a farce to celebrate a sports tournament during the current Ecuadorian crisis.
Players fearing for their safety at the Women’s Copa Libertadores in Ecuador have contacted FIFPRO seeking urgent help. More to follow. pic.twitter.com/hYkYXe8qNr— FIFPRO (@FIFPRO) October 13, 2019
Ecudorian goverrnment with help from UN made a deal with protesters to end the riots. CONMEBOL gave notice that the tournament will restart today.
Tuesday games: (A) Atletico Huila 3-0 Cerro Porteno (A) Penarol 2-2 Colo-Colo (B) Deportivo Cuenca 5-1 Mundo Futuro (B) Estudiantes de Caracas 1-4 Ferroviaria Huila, Cuenca, and Ferroviaria are through to the QFs. Cerro Porteno can advance next week with a win; Colo-Colo and Penarol both need a win and hope the opposite game goes their way Today's games: (C) Corinthians 3-1 America (C) Nanas in progress Libertad/Limpeno (D) Santiago Morning 5-0 Municipalidad de Majes (D) UAI Urquiza in progress Independiente Medellin/Formas Intimas From what I can tell, the in-progress (C) game is currently scoreless, while IM/FI has score on UAIU in (D). If those results hold, Corinthians and IM/FI would qualify for the QFs.
The results have *not* held! X-D Nanas is now down by 3, while UAIU has just scored a go-ahead goal after getting an equalizer earlier. Still time to play in both, though.
Okay, now the matches are final. This means, surprisingly, that between (C) and (D) there are *no* teams yet qualified to the QFs, and only one team is eliminated. That said, the only maybe surprising result so far is America beating Libertad/Limpeno - which I guess isn't so surprising, especially since I said earlier that the Colombian teams had the potential to make (C) and (D) interesting. But otherwise the results have all been as expected in those groups. Group (B) has definitely gone essentially as I thought being the Group of Life, with Ferroviaria running away with the group and one of the other three getting the opportunity to advance. I didn't favor any of those three teams, but maybe I should have considered "home field advantage" and Deportivo Cuenca has beaten both of the other two minnows. Group (A) is quite interesting as my predicted Group of Death, with no teams yet eliminated and only one game so far decided by more than one goal.

I'm glad the next edition of the CLF will be in Chile... It seems like the glory days for Colo-Colo are over*, and I'd hate for their swan song to have been cut off by placement in the Group of Death. *It could be that 2019 was simply a "down" year for them, too, and that they'd still be likely to qualify directly as one of Chile's top 2 teams in a return to form next year. Unfortunately, I have a somewhat cynical view of WoSo in non-Western countries in that I feel like the men's organizations that often support women's team will ride a high but then drop support when trouble shows up.
Yeah, it sucks when that happens. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/women/4287277.stm https://www.npr.org/2012/01/31/146159655/womens-pro-soccer-cancels-2012-season https://www.independent.ie/sport/so...t-as-fai-respond-with-statement-35592523.html https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/sport/324984/erceg-to-stand-down-from-football-ferns (I know, I know, but we are still 'Western' whether we like it or not) Libertadores Group B is over – with a win for the home nation Ecuador's champions over Brazil's champions. Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that Western WoSo was better-run or more stable. They often aren't - but the symptoms are different. And I should have referred to is as countries where WoSo is less (or more) established. Those links don't really capture what I was trying to get at - in those links, the womens' teams (lack of) support (whether an NT, an independent club, or one associated with a men's club) is largely irrespective of on-field performance. I had just meant to point out a pattern I'd noticed in countries where WoSo is less established (where independent club teams are nearly unheard-of) that a winning WoSo club often gets modest support as long as they're on top, but if they have an "off" season or two, they never recover from it. (Or, if they do, it takes a long time.) Certainly not a hard rule, but it's more common than in places where WoSo has started to grow its own roots.
Oh yeah, I get what you mean, I was just being, uh, "smart". I really hope Colo-Colo will keep supporting the women's team – for one thing, they have a friendly match soon in Rapa Nui (Easter Island), which is pretty cool. In Saturday's big Libertadores games in the non-east of Ecuador, the quarterfinalists were confirmed. The placings in Group C swung wildly, with an understrength Corinthians down 2-0 at half-time, in danger of exiting the tournament. They survived, but with a red card for midfielder Gabi Zanotti. Wow, hadn't any idea Rapa Nui had a women's football team. How many people are there on the island? And how many of the locals descend from the original inhabitants? I am sorry, but my knowledge probably dates back to the '90s' film "Rapa Nui" at best. I have visions of a football pitch surrounded by Moai (as the supporters).
Dunno much about it, but the answers in order: Not many; Not many; Yes there was a moai statue at Rapa Nui men's game against Colo Colo (either real or replica). But this is all pre-empting the Easter Island thread next year. With the upheavals in Quito, we didn't mention the altitude: at 2850m, it's the world's highest capital city, hence the extra training that teams did. Next year Conmebol should consider holding the event somewhere very low to balance things out, maybe on some kind of island. Love all the relatively close games. Gotta say, part of it is probably a function of the expanded tournament - I personally love the straightforward groups (no "best 2nds" or "best 3rds") and the extra elimination round. I hope fans and administration in CONMEBOL see this and up their support for WoSo!
