Argentina: The 29th season in the women's Campeonato, the first pro/semipro season – but it was the season that never ended. With the worldwide pandemic, the games were halted in March. 2019/20 began with a derby at the Bombonera: Boca vs River: Superclásico Femenino - Tues 24 Sep 2019 www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU2T1wPxnz4 Boca Juniors were almost unstoppable: Andrea Ojeda scored 16 goals, Fanny Rodríguez 13, while GK Laurina Oliveros conceded only 7 all season. Buenos Aires team Lanús (9th) came close to stifling Boca defensively, but fell to an Eliana Stábile freekick. Lanús vs Boca Juniors, 1 Dec 2019 youtube.com/watch?v=W-M0K_Y7sOY 2002/03 runners-up Independiente were relegated in 2016, but are back in the higher positions this year in 5th place – and Gimnasia La Plata were level on points in 6th, but lost heavily to higher-placed clubs. Racing Club (7th) hosted one of the year's biggest games, and their first in the main stadium in Avellaneda: Racing 2 - 1 Villa San Carlos, 29 Feb 2020 youtube.com/watch?v=B_oLk6WDPYM And yes, Racing's stadium is the one that's about 20m from their rival Independiente. In the end, Argentina's top 4 were separated by 5 points when play stopped. And, in a turnaround from 2018/19's season finale, the defending champs UAI went to River Plate (4th) and got thrashed this time – River's Uruguayan striker Carolina Birizamberri scored 2. River Plate vs UAI Urquiza, 15 Feb 2020 youtube.com/watch?v=0FDQUgbCuao In the last game in Argentina before football was abandoned, UAI (2nd) drew at San Lorenzo (3rd), another strong placing for Maca Sánchez's team. San Lorenzo vs UAI Urquiza, 16 Mar 2020 youtube.com/watch?v=jbXxz8wDej0 Boca Juniors returned from their Chilean trip to win 7-2 v Platense (11th) and 16-0(!) v Excursionistas (13th). Boca won the regular season, 2pts ahead with a game in hand, but the title playoffs didn't start, so it wasn't really conclusive. No champion was declared. Boca have won the Libertadores place. For the 3rd season in a row, Argentina's top scorer is Mariana Larroquette, 29 goals for UAI. Other tournaments: the women's summer cup (Copa de Verano) was a full-blooded event with Argentina's two most popular clubs, and the home team of San Luis province, central Argentina, in February. Boca won the trophy after beating River Plate 2-0 in a derby with all the same passion as in the capital city. Certainly gives the lie to the idea that nobody watches female football in Argentina. Announced in Feb, a women's Argentine cup knockout competition is planned for future seasons. The Covid shutdown is a concern for women's football, but the early signs are good. The AFA federation will continue to pay 8 players per club through 2020 despite no scheduled games, and today it approved extra measures for youth football and licencing. Argentina is also applying to host the 2022 Copa América Femenina, and could become a substitute host for the current U20 WWC.
Brazil: The 2020 women's season is still on - that's the message from the CBF. Very surprising, with all the bad news of coronavirus in the country. A restart in late August is scheduled to continue division A1 of the Brasileirão, which played 5 weeks in Feb-March and then stopped. Those opening games were in the Brazilian late summer - expanded coverage had nearly every match live online, with the 'goool' shouts included. This was week 1: The game in São Paulo had the previous 2nd- and 4th-place clubs, but a convincing win for Santos with a quick triple after an hour: Santos 4 - 0 Flamengo (8 Feb 2020) -Larissa 16', 61', Ketlen 64', Cristiane 69' https://mycujoo.tv/en/view/event/89750 (Match report: Gazeta Esportiva) Reigning champions Ferroviária also won 4-0 in game 1 v Audax. Pandemic futebol - how will they do it? If the top division isn't disrupted, it would play its season ending in November, and playoffs would crown a champion on 6 December. The Brazilian federation has promised regular virus tests for staff. There was one positive test at Flamengo before the Rio club resumed training. (The CBF are smarter than Einstein, of course ) Meanwhile division 'A2' and junior football would play into January.
2020 Weeks 2 & 3 were in mid-February. A regular contender near the top, Kindermann (3rd) could only contain the continental champs Corinthians until the final stages, in week 2 in Sao Paulo. The four new promoted teams are all doing well with a 50% record or better this season so far - Palmeiras are the best in 4th place, with three wins including a 4-0 in the east at Vitória. But days later, the national champions Ferroviaria went to Palmeiras and overwhelmed the Verdão, 4-1. Corinthians 2 - 1 Kindermann (13 Feb 2020) Adriana 69'p, Victoria Albuquerque 84' / Julia Bianchi 93' www.mycujoo.tv/en/view/event/91463 Match report: Globo.com Palmeiras 1 - 4 Ferroviária (16 Feb 2020) Carla Nunes 19' / Samia 12', Patrícia Sochor 15', 34', Maglia 60' www.mycujoo.tv/en/view/event/91747 Match info: CBF.com.br
In week 4 was a shock result, newly promoted São Paulo (9th) beat their decorated rivals, in the last game played before their fans. Clearly SPFC had a decent team already, and their two goalscorers are both new signings, after 2019 striker Valéria signed at Madrid CFF. São Paulo 2 - 0 Corinthians (29 Feb) -Gláucia 17', Duda 44' www.youtube.com/watch?v=YktNU0XEM0g Week 4 report: CBF The Brazilian week 5 was interrupted in March and resumes on Wednesday (26 Aug) with Ferroviaria and Santos at the top with 4 wins each. Corinthians are releasing a documentary the day before, "Respeita As Minas". Peru: Not a documentary, but a rap video about Alianza Lima, one of the 14 teams approved for the new league. The dates aren't decided yet - Covid is still impacting the country badly, despite a gruelling 3-month lockdown.

A very sad story in Venezuela in August, the 19-year-old Javiela Liendo died. She was a former U17 international and had signed for four league clubs including Atlético Venezuela. Her death was from ketoacidosis, an illness caused by complications from diabetes. There was an outpouring of tributes in the Venezuelan football community, and from the vinotinto striker at Atlético Madrid, Deyna Castellanos. https://primicia.com.ve/deportes/fallecio-futbolista-venezolana-javiela-liendo (Archive) Javiela Liendo - (img: radio fe)
Colombia: The league launch was done in an unusual way, with a special penalty derby between Bogota's rival clubs. Either they have unusual nicknames, or it was attended by some major religious figures: "Cardinals and ambassadors faced off in a penalty shootout organized by Cerveza Águila as part of the revival of professional soccer in Colombia. In the Independiente tournament, Santa Fe won against Millonarios and both the female and male teams managed to win the trophy." - (FeminaFutbol.com) The choice of event was probably down to match fitness and maybe distancing, as it happened a week before Colombia's lockdown ended. Breakout star of the 2019 league, Linda Caicedo is now 15 and the striker has switched to sign for América de Cali's rivals, Deportivo Cali. An article in El País mentioned a proposed restriction on underage players in Colombia because of Covid-19(?), but this hasn't affected Caicedo – the 2020 season has begun in October, and she's evidently in the first XI. However, her club have lost their 2 opening games. América de Cali 2 - 0 Deportivo Cali Farlyn Caicedo 35', Joemar Guarecuco 46'

Wow that's great.... I would think that Colo Colo is the biggest CONMEBOL club WoSo gig outside of Brazil (though some of the Colombia gigs might be getting close)
In Chile, a couple of other things – there could be government involvement to get clubs to take the women's game more seriously, after a conference with all interested parties in June. The deputy minister of labour spoke of the need for better work conditions for players. https://www.valparaisonoticias.cl/2...rctica-del-ftbol-femenino-en-nuestro-pas/2484 and After the Copa América: That 2018 tournament's host region in northern Chile, Coquimbo, has a lot of teams including Deportes La Serena Femenino, and has many people who are working to help women's football – but they weren't receiving much help in that year, as told in a long article by Rodrigo Solis: http://www.diarioeldia.cl/deportes/emergente-fuerza-futbol-femenino-regional / English / Archive (img by Carlos Figueroa Rojas, cc-by-sa) The Brasileirão Feminino season is nearing the end (at last!), and we'll know the two finalists in a few days.
So, in Brazil's semi-finals, Kindermann have reached their first national final since 2014. In the semis they narrowly beat the high-flying debutants São Paulo FC yesterday. Corinthians can reach their fourth final in succession, but the new entrants Palmeiras held them 0-0 in the ida. The second leg kicks off shortly at Arena Corinthians - it's live online: https://www.pscp.tv/BRFeminino/1RDxlrAMnPzGL
And the Brazilian final 1st leg is set for Sunday night (22 Nov) when Kindermann host the match in Florianópolis. Then the championship decider is 2 weeks later: https://www.cbf.com.br/futebol-bras...orarios-das-finais-do-brasileiro-feminino-a-1 (Archive)

Yeah, neither can I... There's an article today with some info - I think it says the top 5 go to a championship round, and bottom 5 to the Permanencia tournament. ⬤ Brazil's national champions will be crowned, after a 2020 season that lasted eleven months! The final 2nd leg is live, and about to start (link below). The last champions, Ferroviária, fell to defeat in their quarter-final. They had improved their position to 4th in the league table, but Tatiele Silveira's team lost out to the 5th-placed club: Palmeiras won one match 2-1, and the other 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw. 2nd in the league, Santos again had a disappointing quarter-final exit in a 0-2 aggregate loss to São Paulo (7th), with goals by Jaqueline and Thais. The other quarter-finalists Grêmio and Internacional lost to today's two finalists. Soon after, Santos had to forfeit a Paulista group match, due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad. The Brasileirão final is tied at 0-0 after the first leg in Florianópolis, with no away goals rule nor extra time, I believe. The hosts are seeking their 2nd Brazilian title, after last year's shock final defeat, while Kindermann's coach Jorge Barcellos was previously responsible for scouting some players on both sides in today's game.
