Have to wonder if Villa missed out on their best chance to snag 4th this season. With Laursen retiring, and Barry possibly off, and the rise of Everton, and possibly Pompey, Sunderland, and Man City due to increased funds, I wonder if they will have a better shot anytime soon. Tottenham could be back into contention again soon with the Ramos disaster over and Harry in charge.
Great point about Villa. Its true, the 'second tier' of prem teams is becoming very hotly contested. A rising tide lifts all ships, as they say, and increased competition can only mean good things for Chelsea and other English teams on the European front. And to think that a year ago we would have probably included the Geordies in that group. Two years ago we definitely would have. Haha
Good point Ben, although Lerner seems to have a very good relationship with his manager and has invested within the club- ie improving the Academy, so I think they have a long term look about themselves rather than the throw money to fix everything attitude of some. IIRC this upcoming season is Barry's final season and Lerner has already said that he would rather keep him that make 10 mil in the transfer window as his impact within the squad was worth more than the transfer fee. Nice to have an owner with that line of thinking.
I think they will be a UEFA player for a while, but I still think they blew a massive opportunity this year with that late season collapse. I think Arsenal will probably be better next year but who knows. Hope they continue to do well as I would rather see the Villa and Everton do well rather than Tottenham or City.
they deserve it though after that bollox in the UEFA Cup their season went pear shaped right after that.
True. It's funny to see teams fight for a spot in Europe and then they make it and then put out a substandard team in a knockout round so they can focus on getting a spot in Europe the next season. Granted Villa was going for CL, but still funny nonetheless.
So this is the time that redtop hack journo's rub their slimey hands together with glee - it's Real Madrid Presidential elections time. Plenty of back page stories and open tapping up of players without a single iota of UEFA involvement - joy. How many times with JT, Frank, Ess and others be linked with RM over the summer? Or will it be exclusively about Ronaldo? I can hardly wait - actually yes, I can wait. Sadly we have until July 5 to endure the impending bollocks.

Not saying he is the sole cause, but their reing pretty much coincided with the rise and fall of Juninho. Way too overlooked of a player.
Perez is in at Madrid - shortened race due to lack of competition (one small blessing I guess). http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/8076515.stm OF course with El Galactico back at the helm you can expect Fergies face to get a little more crimson this summer - just hope Perez doesn't have his eye on Lamps or JT. EDIT: Related news - Pelligrini is the first signing of the new Perez reign (wonder if Perez had discussions with him before he ascended or whether it's just a coincidence?): http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/8078185.stm
Clearly there is not one jot or scintilla of truth in the situation that clubs, (other than Chelsea), tap players or managers up and any such assertion would be as risible as it is ludicrous.

When we say 'Other teams' I don't think we're necessarily including players and teams none of us have ever heard of, are we? That's just more in the form of a video nasty IMO.
