"It's great to get this award. It is the biggest award that a footballer can get in Finland," Hyypia was quoted as saying by Finnish news agency STT. "There are so many people that should be thanked. I have got a lot of support both on the way up and the way down. Especially when things have not gone well, the support has been very important," Hyypia said. Striker Valery Popovitch of Haka Valkeakoski was named footballer of the year in the Finnish first division, while coach Keith Armstrong of champions HJK Helsinki was named coach of the year.
