Big ups to the Galaxy for winning the Supporters Shield for the second time and adding it to the Open Cup and CONCACAF Cup LA won last year. Does this "trophy" mean anything to Galaxy fans or after the 3 near-misses, is the only hardare that LA fans give a crap about the Rothenberg Cup?
Certainly the MLS Cup is the trophy everyone wants first, but the Supporters' Shield does mean something because winning gives you a spot in the CCC.
Winning should mean a lot, if not everything. Performing better than everyone else over a long 28-game schedule is much more of an accoplishment than a 7 game or less tournament. I care for it since I'm more into the traditional single-table winner format. Wining the MLS Cup is a little more important since the League and almost everyone stresses that as being the true champion. I'll take whatever trophies we can get.
I'm very pumped we took the Supporters' Shield. We deserved it, and I'll cherish it. I do feel we HAVE to win MLS Cup for a more complete season. We also have the Open Cup and InterAmerican Cup to fight for. If I had to rank these in order of how I feel about them, it would be this: 1-MLS Cup 2-Suppoprters' Shield 3-Open Cup 4-InterAmerican Cup FYI-Sigi, in his post-game radio interview mentioned how happy they were to win the Supporters' Shield.
i've always looked at MLS as having two competitions just like most euro leagues. MLS Cup == FA Cup Supporters Shield == League Champions Open Cup == League Cup though i do agree, to be considered one of the great teams (the cobi/cien era team) in MLS, despite our amazing record over the past 7 years, we do need an MLS Cup.

Well, I'd like the Supporter's Shield to have more prominence, and I'd be quite happy if the Quakes now held it, but the truth is that it really doesn't carry much weight. I don't think I've ever heard the phrase, "...he won the Supporters Shield in 2001 with the Fusion." In the end, it's the MLS Cup that's worth all the marbles.
The Supporter's Shield is HUGE and eminently cool because the fans birthed a completely legit award. Thanks Sam Perron. I heard teams like the Mutiny acclaimed as "regular season champions" before the Supporters Shield existed. It's bragging rights, and something like a moral victory. Casual fans recognize the achievement, and real fans especially do. But our system is better than the Euro tables. League and playoffs, like the World Cup. MLS Cup = MLS Cup Supporters Shield = Supporters Shield Open Cup = Open Cup Screw Europe.

Supporters Shield is only a league championship in the minds of people that know their going to lose the MLS Cup. Here's the real breakdown: MLS Cup = League Champions (why? becuase the winner is the champion) Open Cup = Cup Losers Cup Supporters Shield = Supporters Shield Enjoy not be champions once again!
You got one wrong, Ben: US Open Cup: Watching the Muggles spooge away a two goal lead thanks to the INTIMIDATING HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE of twelve passersby camping out for Foghat tickets or whatever. And you left off one: CONCACAF Champions Cup: Watching the Skittles get blasted all over the geography while all of CONCACAF laughs their heads off.
At some distant point, many eons from now, the Galaxy will win a championship and you'll never see these silly analogies again. Until then, they have to cherish every meaningless prize they can.
It's only meaningful if you also win a championship. Think of the last time a team did that, that legendary, glorious team. The last time a team won the shield and failed to prove their worth when it counted was eliminated. Let us hope the same thing happens to you.

Back to the topic at hand, I CARE about the Supporter's Shield, and it makes me proud as a LAG fan, and it was amazing that the Galaxy had the raw steel to bypass the NerfQuakes on the way to earning the honor.... GO GALAXY!!!! BARBECUE KC MASTERPIECE!!! Topper
Perhaps, as I lack the ability to dumb down to your guys level. Nevertheless, all that needs to be said is that you will soon by 7 time losers and the rest of us will have to suffer hearing about your little cups and shields that no one cares about. I might add that it's kind of sad that you're already preparing for defeat. One would think that as true fans you might hold out some hope for a championship. But, alas, we're hearing about the supporters shield and the open cup.

You mean the one that San Francisco Greek-American won some years back? The one that two defunct MLS teams won? Galaxy can hang out with SF Greek-American while KC will remain on the short-list of true champions.
