100% accurate , They got Gazdag just to do something and it was a huge mistake. They are not going to quickly reverse course. They will double down unless someone makes a offer to good to be true for him.
Gm gets the final say not the coach. It’s a balance and I’ll repeat again out of Nancy’s mouth he said we don’t add players just to add players. He wants quality and people that will succeed , the Crew process is slow but he isn’t going to say no to great players. But he doesn’t want a bunch of marginal guys just for the sake of having a full roster. ITS COACH SPEAK ! ️ you guys have been repeating it and twisting it. The GM has to find really good players that meet the standards they set to make this new Crew/ Nancy culture. It’s slow and while he said he wants a core of 15 guys getting the minutes. I can’t argue that but you need quality guys learning and ready to step up. Upgrade the starters Nancy won’t complain but he doesn’t need more players that need to be developed just to fill the roster quota. It’s his mindset and philosophy which isn’t going to change. The GM has to do a better job , scouts have to do a better job and if they do then Nancy will win US another cup. If we self impose spending limits and want 2/3 of the roster from Crew2 then it won’t work. Don’t be a mls club on a budget. Bez spent big money but he got the right guys! You can’t make mistakes on DP and tam level contracts. You only take risk on young cheap players so you can easily move on without damaging your salary cap and roster situation. Focus on the ppl above Nancy and hope they get better before Nancy leaves for a better job. Celtic or otherwise , eventually a bigger club is likely to offer him a job. Bez wasn’t perfect and a few moves he made baffled me but at the end of the day the GM is in charge of the roster and the Coach is there to coach. If Nancy was a sporting director roll then just fire Tall now.
I remember Nancy saying that when a player has made up his mind that he wants to leave, that the club helps him do that because his focus is no longer on the current team. Is this the same for Nancy now with himself?
Depends if he actually wants to leave or if Brit papers are just making noise. Just read give me sport, sounds like all the noise is coming from Celtic, who haven't even made an actual offer yet. If he wants to go, get compensation and let him go. Can't keep people who don't wanna be here. I don't see why Nancy would want to go, SPL is trash and Celtic doesn't do shit in Europe and has no real spending power in Europe. At best, it's a sideways move, which I think is being generous.
Agree on the SPL being trash. But Celtic is indisputably a big club, and if Nancy has ambitions of coaching at the biggest clubs in Europe, Celtic is a large stepping stone toward reaching that goal. Do the job there, and you can at a minimum get interviews literally anywhere. Can you say the same for being the manager for Columbus Crew? Don’t think that makes it a lateral move.
Here’s one thing about him coaching the Tims. He won’t be able to use his shortsighted “small roster mentality.” Celtic regularly plays in the Champions League. Like every year, since my Rangers suck donkey balls lately. And there’s the Scottish Cup. AND the Scottish League Cup. There’s no “Celtic 2” to send to those tournaments. He would have to get over himself and his stubborn small club mindset if he would even hope to last a few seasons there. The fanbase the Old Firm clubs is brutal. I’m no expert on European football, but Celtic would not be a good fit for Nancy.
Is the most likely scenario, if Nancy takes the Celtic job, that he becomes the next Bob Bradley/Jesse Marsch/Ronny Deila and he eventually after a short or medium term gets dumped unceremoniously? Unfortunately I think we all know the answer. It would be tough to watch. But impossible is an opinion, brother. Of course Nancy has an ego, you have to have one, and he might think he can be the guy that finally breaks through.
I do think that the fan site seems to be underestimating him simply because of his lack of European experience, while ignoring that many lower divisions in Europe are shit compared to MLS.
I'm fine with him wanting to test himself, I fully expect him to leave in the next... 18 months, max. I just don't think the Celtic job has the juice some are making it out to. Look at the list of recent managers, who is tearing it up in Europe right now after having coached Celtic?
I wonder what his ultimate goal is. If willing the CL in Europe is the goal, he could use Celtic as a stepping stone. They should spend for him and he will always be in the CL where he could impress other clubs. If stability for his family and ease of life is a goal, why not use interest from Celtic to get Dee to open her purse and stay here? I could see that, how many more years do we have Nancy contracted for?
The thing that Nancy has yet to do is build a team and sustain. He inherited a good team that got better with Cucho.
…wut m8 He inherited a pile of garbage that missed the playoffs the year before he got here. The defense especially was a total shambles. Phil Quinton got major minutes to begin 2023. The attack was Cucho and Lucas, which yeah a ton of talent, but he sold half of that and rebuilt that plane while it was still in the air. Immediate trophies. Look, I know things are bad around here now, death spiral and moving to Cleveland and pain and suffering etc etc, but what I’m not going to stand for is Nancy slander of any kind. He’s the best coach this team has ever had, and he deserves a statue with a plaque that says impossible is an opinion.
Have I taught you nothing, it’s not Dee that holds the purse strings. Family life is very important to Nancy and his kids are happy here. He has not won Supporters Shield yet either which is a personal goal of his. Nancy and Issa are also simpatico, too much so for my liking (think we’d be a better team with a FO with more of an edge). Nancy is destined for bigger things at some point though. If he is leaving, the powers that be haven’t heard a word. However, they thought Cucho was staying then that last minute offer showed up and all bets were off. Given all the smoke in the press, I’m nervous. Nancy has his flaws, but he is far and away the biggest difference maker on this team.
He can have all the words he wants; I agree with @96er . That 2008 team is considered to be the best Crew team of all time in terms of the top-to-bottom roster, the elite talent at the top, and being wildly entertaining. Relative to what MLS was at the time, we were clearly the best thing going with players and coaching. But the 2023 team was still trying to figure itself out midseason, and we actually SOLD OUR BEST PLAYER. We certainly had our share of elite players, but we also had guys that we didn't really think that highly of until things started gelling in the Nancy system. Did anyone have Yaw Yeboah scoring the winning goal in MLS Cup on their bingo card? And Nancy followed up '23 with a '24 season where we won Leagues Cup, probably got robbed of a continental title by food poisoning, and dominated MLS with overwhelming performances where we played the most exciting soccer we've ever seen. Sigi Schmid, god love him, spent three years building a team, had one great season and then split. Nancy built a team on the fly, reached "whole greater than sum of parts" status and won the Cup in year one, and had two more playoff appearances, additional trophies and a CCC near miss. I'll take Wilifried Nancy for the win.
I boo you @KCbus, I boo you. There were some truly questionable talents on that team, and also some truly questionable moves, like putting Danny O at center back. Moffat got hurt like 3 or 4 games in and luckily Brad Evans proved his quality by stepping up. So much that he was who Sigi took with him. We also had some platooning at positions when people were injured or whatnot. But Sigi had also gone through two disheartening years prior to 08, ones that would have gotten a coach canned in other leagues. And the team he left for Bobby Popgun won the Shield the next season too. So he certainly gets a metric ********ton of credit.
Re: Celtic, we have such a US-centric perspective on this type of thing. Maybe Nancy’s their guy. Maybe not. But even a cursory search of news sites in Glasgow results in a LOT of names on that list of candidates. I laughed when I read Bogert implying that a manager ‘who’s not available until December’ must mean Nancy. Well, it could, sure. But a name that comes up a lot in discussions among Celtic fans is Bodø/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen. Guess when his current contract expires?
Get real. A pile ilof Garbage that had won the league in 2020? Nagbe, Morris, Moreira, and Cucho were already on the roster. He gets a ton of credit for getting the Crew2 guys and Porter outcasts to produce: Schulte, Zawadzki, Farsi, JRR, Yeboah, & Matan. He gets credit for Camacho & Ramirez & Amundsen playing well and the Rossi/LZ switch working well, along with Bez. But the small roster thing is truth, not slander. And there have been some swings & misses, too: Gazdag, Jones, Gressel, & Hinestroza. Aliyu & Picard have not been great. Chambost OK.
So who's the better player: Guillermo Barros Schelotto OR Darlington Nagbe There's been a lot of talk recently how Darlington is the GOAT, one of the league's best midfielders etc etc and at least some of it is definitely warranted...but there WAS a lot of talk about how GBS had the ability to make better others around him. Is it recency bias or is Darlington truly the GOAT?
