Can anyone explain to me how Italy would have advanced over Denmark if the Sweden Denmark final would have been 1 - 1 instead of 2 - 2???? The Danes F/A would have been 3/1 while Italy's would have been 3/2.
Actually, Italy would have needed to win by two goals if the result were 1-1. The tiebreaker which was used counted results among the three teams. Since all three games ended in ties, the relevant part was goals scored. Italy-Denmark 0-0 Italy-Sweden 1-1 Sweden-Denmark 2-2 (Sweden wins with 3 goals, Denmark second with2) If Sweden-Denmark had finished 1-1, then the tiebreaker would have moved to the next one down the list, which was full-group goal difference, and, as you point out, with Italy's 2-1 win over Bulgaria, Denmark would still have advanced. But Italy knew well before the end of the game that it would not finish 1-1, so their only hope was that Sweden-Denmark would have a winner, in which case Italy just needed to win their game to have any chance. Hope that explains it.
Prior to the Sweden - Denmark match and the Italy Bulgaria match the Italian players were worried about a 2 - 2 draw in the other game. Why would this be?
Because of the goals-scored table above. A 2-2 result (or 3-3, or 4-4, etc) in Sweden-Denmark meant that Sweden would have the most goals scored among the three teams with Denmark second. Nothing Italy did against Bulgaria would make any difference because they only scored one goal in their two games vs Sweden and Denmark.
