Just an informal survey. Is the confetti come directly from the front office? In other words, do they have control over it? which mean they can shut it off if they want to?
Meh. I don't really have a problem. You don't really notice it while watching in person. I guess confetti is the same to us as streamers are to south americans. I'm more concerened about getting the FO to stop playing chant-killing music when we're trying to build up the atmosphere, ala what they did at the begining of the match on saturday.
I don't mind the confetti. In fact, I quite enjoy it. But I have to agree whole-heartedly with rand al'thor's comments. It's seems they've been doing it more than just this past Saturday. The pre-game is getting over produced in general. And I also hope the band doing the star-spangled banner was just an anomoly this week. More and more I'm hating the band and I originally dug them. I like the anthem guy. Maybe he had a prior commitment last week.
Me as well. I always look forward to the Anthem and this was a real letdown. Not only did it seem to reduce participation but the band was so loud over the sound system that I couldn't hear myself, forget hearing anyone else.
Over the course of the game I was randomly sticking pieces of confetti into my friends jacket pocket without him noticing... It was fun, then he stuck his hand in his pocket and was all "wtf???" Nothing wrong with it imo.
Fan-created atmosphere and confetti are not mutually exclusive... in fact it can be self-reinforcing. Many supporter groups do confetti. And fact is-- most fans really like it. As for it on the field... I doubt the players care. Unless there's a beachball in front of the goal. That could affect things.
That's the difference though, isn't it? Fans throwing confetti is one thing. The FO paying to shoot the stuff out of cannons is another. Kind of like the difference between some supporters banging on a drum and the FO paying a marching band to play during the game. But that would never happen, right ...
When I saw the opening game last year I was like "neat confetti!" And then I hung my head when I realized they were going to do it every match. Should be reserved for special occasions in my opinion. Like a playoff clinching victory at home or something like that.
Yeah, but the band directly interferes with the supporters, and that sucks... the FO confetti is completely orthogonal to whatever display a SG is trying to do. And if fans like it, and it gets them more into the game so be it. Personally, I just can't stand streamers on the pitch, not only because it does kind of interfere with play, but also our opponents engage in time-wasting to clear it off during throw-ins and free kicks. That actually affects the game, esp when we're losing.
The lack of confetti wasn't a function of them not shooting it off, but rather the wind patterns in the stadium and lack of goals. They still fired the confetti cannons off, it just landed in the stands from what I saw.
I was indifferent on the confetti, but this is two matches in a row now where a piece of confetti landed in my beer.
OMG! The worst offense ever! I hope you demanded a replacement beer. Who knows where that confetti has been! Oh.. And ban the confetti!
