Jacques Santini has apparently come up with a list of 36 or 37 players for his pre-selection for the Confederations Cup. This group will eventually be cut down to the 23 he'll bring to the tourney. But according to football365.fr he has informed these players and their clubs of their possible call up this summer.

Petit and Vieira have been ruled out due to injuries and since the last week of Spain's regular season overlaps the beginning of the Confederations Cup, he may decide in the end to leave out Zidane and Makelele.

    http://www.football365.fr/bleus/story_102341.shtml

Here are the players football365.fr speculates are included in Santini's pre-list:

    Les gardiens (5)
    Barthez, Coupet, Landreau, Ramé, Frey

    Les défenseurs (11)
Lizarazu, Gallas, Desailly, Sagnol, Mexès, Boumsong, Silvestre, Thuram, Bréchet, Réveillère, Squillacci

    Les milieux de terrain (11)
Dacourt, Pedretti, Makelele, Pires, Rothen, Giuly, Zidane, Luccin, Carrière, Micoud, Malbranque, S.Dalmat

    Les attaquants (9)
D.Cissé, Wiltord, Henry, Kapo, Moreira, Trezeguet, Marlet, Govou, Luyindula

A pretty impressive list of players. Only Brazil and Argentina have the depth of quality players Santini has at his disposal. Any comments on players you'd add/delete from this list?

What about Willy Sagnol, William Gallas and Emmanuel Petit? They've all been on great form for their clubs!(especially Sagnol and Gallas)

Petit is one of my favourite players, but he's out on injury, he wont be fit fot the confeds cup, Gallas I don't like. I want to see more French based players anyways.

Please bring all french players possible that were on field in 98 (and Vieira, most of all) to make Brazil's vengeance feast even more tastier.

Hey PBDiop your proposed team has 25 players! Confederations Cup rosters are supposed to be 23. Which two would you cut from the list?

Petit is injured,as is Vieira and thus not available. But I think you have to select Gallas, he's one of the better centerbacks in the world at the moment. If I was picking the 23 for France here's who I'd go with:

    Les gardiens
    Barthez, Coupet, Landreau

    Les défenseurs
Lizarazu, Gallas, Desailly, Sagnol, Mexès, Boumsong, Silvestre, Thuram,

    Les milieux de terrain
Dacourt, Pedretti, Makelele, Pires, Rothen, Zidane, Carrière,

    Les attaquants
    D.Cissé, Wiltord, Henry, Moreira, Trezeguet,

I agree with Martin's proposal, plus I want to see more of Boumsong, Mexes, Rothen and Pedretti since I've just read about 'em.

I have 26 there actually...Those are just some players I want to see, so, to answer your question, I would leave out Barthez, Wiltord and Moreira, and you know Kapo will be injured anyways, so might as well leave him out too.

First of all, I am Mr. MIGkiller (although I 'm thinking about changing it to Mr. MIRAGEkiller).

Second, since Ronaldo or anyone else isn't going down off the bed this time, we shall see who will go down on the field later. ;)

I think Rivaldo will have an anxiety attack this time...

Anyways, i think everyone wants to see another France-Brazil, it's not even a done deal yet and everbody is talking about it. Can't wait for this tourney.

By the way, do you know if their will be many Brazilian fans there?

Yeah, I just hope you guys don't step out of the road to meet us in the final. ;D

Beware of the blood-thirsting american warmongers in the semis! :D

I doubt there will be much brazilian fans traveling to France to watch a tournament that's not that hyped by the media.

The fans there will be probably composed of brazilians living in France or in the nearby (remember it's Europe: fans don't have to cover huge distances anyway).

No way, we will be there, and I hope you will be too.

    Ok, i'm off.

True...I guess it would be nice for the French to win or be right about SOMETHING for a change...;)

    U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Seriously, though -- I would love to see Rothen play. I've heard a lot about him and haven't had a chance to see him. Also, I've noticed that Thierry Henry has been falling off a few mock selection lists...why is he not the "lock" that he used to be?

Maybe he wants to rest after a really frustrating season?

I guess I am just like anyone else : on one hand I think this competition is useless and ridiculous one year ahead of Euro 2004 but on the other hand this is an official FIFA tournament so I will watch the games and hope we win them. After all this could be good for the players' confidence to win this competition again.
I am very angry at Santini that he does not take Dhorasso in the team since he is a million times better than Pedretti (who I think is OK).
I would like to see Mexes, Gallas and Boumsong play all games in CD. I do not fancy Rothen who I think is way overrated and almost never scores (unlike Pires).
Cisse, Henry and Trezeguet owe us, the supporters, a revenge after last year WC disaster.

Ok I've been away for awhile so let me give you who I think Santini will take to the Confederations Cup.

    Barthez, Coupet, Landreau,

Lizarazu, Gallas, Desailly, Sagnol, Mexès, Silvestre, Thuram, Bréchet,

Dacourt, Pedretti, Pires, Rothen, Giuly, Carrière, Micoud,

    D.Cissé, Wiltord, Henry, Kapo, Trezeguet

I don't think either Makelele or Zidane will be chosen due to their club obligations with Real Madrid. The same applies to Celta's Luccin. Overall though it's a top notch 23 man team and the favorites for the crown.

    1. Why isn't Giuly in the starting lineup?

    2. My opinion on this cup is that it is more of an experience/developmental thing so the young guys can gain experience and also so the unity and chemistry of the team stays intact and they gel together for the Euro and WC.

    3. Will TV5 televise any of the games?
