    Confeds cup

The confederations cup will be held in France - so we can expect France to have big guns waiting as reigning champs.
Brazil need to sort out the manager situation so that a decent team can finish some unfinished business with the french.

    agree with brasil2002.

IT is a time away. And look at the schedule - many of the "big names" will be winding down their seasons and the season in Brasil will be in swing. Timing wise - the only thing that this tournament will present for probably every team, is a warm up and evaluation for World Cup Qualifying - unless you are a UEFA team that is already working towards Euro 2004.

Look for younger players to go for sure, and perhaps a few "fringe" players or players that may be experienced but not in the mix for 2006 - but may be in the mix for qualifying. If ever there was a time for guys like Alex, Kaka, Fabiano etc. to excell it would be then... provided they don't drink the water that tends to turn a select few Brazilian talents into assclowns.

    Confeds cup

8 months is not that far away considering a coach must be selected and a squad put together - I think that because it'll be held in Europe the competiton will recieve greater kudos meaning that full squads will be employed - more importantly there's a huge bone to pick with the french who'll have home advantage...Brazil will have to win a reasonably important cup in Europe which should be good practice for WC2006.

    Confederations Cup Results [R]

There is a forum under "FIFA and Tournaments" which has more information on the Confederations Cup. But for some of the die hard CBF followers I thought it would be good to have a general thread in here for the matches. I do not know if it will be necessary to start a result thread for every match. I thought it might be better to just have one thread so that we cna watch the progress (or regression... hopefully just progress though) of the selecao and the drive for this title.

    Thoughts? Opinions? Discuss!

First match is against Cameroon. CBF has defeated Cameroon in recent encounters - after being upset in the Olympics to a 9 man selection which, not coincidentally, was Wanderly Luxembourgo's swan song. I have a feeling that Parreira will want to go for the three points against them to start out with a high note. The next match against teh US I would expect to be more experimental before putting everything together for the final match of the group against Turkey (at least I think I got the order right).

I can't wait until the Confeds Cup begins.

Even though it's a tin-cup tournament, it pits some fantasy matchups that I would love to see:

Turkey vs. USA : Two teams that I actively support and love.

Turkey vs. Brazil: Did somebody say "vingança"?

Brazil vs. USA: Let's see how much Donovan and team have improved this year. This is the gold-standard test.

Brazil vs. France: Iff this later-stage matchup happens, it should be interesting. It's WC02 final that never happened ;-)

I can't wait either. I don't know why everyone seems so down on this tournament. It will be great to see how the U.S. matches up with teams like Turkey and Cameroon (even though some of the teams might not be at full strength) and its always fun to match up against Brazil no matter what the circumstance. I'll have my VCR set up for that one most definitely.

I also want to see the USA v. Brazil matchup. Considering what I saw from USA v. New Zealand match, I'm expecting a massacre though.

Both USA and NZ had low technical level but lots of heart.

Then again, soccer is defined in between the lines and its 11x11, so anything is possible.

Here is the FIFA Cups and Tournaments forum and specifically, the Confederations Cup Forum. Just click on the link:

Brazil vs. the US will be interesting. I think if the US was at full strength it would be a bit more interesting to be honest. But as it is, I don't think the team would really have an answer for Adriano in the back line between their central defenders - especially without Eddie Pope. And if Chris Armas plays, they will be exploited by the CBF's speed in the midfield-forward link-up. But of course, the US manager probably knows this and its' hardly guaranteed that Adriano starts - has was the case versus Nigeria.

Give my thoughts on the other matches later.

I just love watching the mational teams play. And when most teams going have 40-60% of their full squad, I think it is a hell of a lot more entertaining than most any club match. How can you not appreciate the quality and the chance to see players that NEVER get to play each other have it out in something meaningful?

This bandwagon affect against this Cup is getting annoying. Since when did the fans join the side of the clubs? I get to see hundreds of club games a year, and about 7-8 international matches that don't include the USA. How could a fan not enjoy this? Screw the clubs; how about if they only play 65 games a year instead of 70. Wouldn't bother me one single bit. There are so many games, so many different tournaments that put the same powerful club teams against each other over and over.

If you love your club team, you can watch them play all the time and not get bored of it. Well, I love my international teams even more, and love every opportunity as long as they players come from the first 1-3 deep in the pool. I thought others would feel the same way.

I think all of the teams in this tournament are doing it perfectly. They are not calling players that shouldn't be called up, and they ARE calling up talented, entertaining players that want to be there, give an effort, and try to make the squad in the future. The '99 and '01 Confed Cup was a little bit of a joke with the sides that showed up. Only France sent a real team in '01. In '99 Germany sent a ridiculously bad squad. With the teams showing up now, the quality of play should not be questioned. Perhaps no one has passion for what it means to actually win this, and I can appreciate that. I just like it as a chance for Brazil to say we're STILL the best (and show off their samba style even more without the WC pressure), or for the USA or my other teams to measure themselves and develop some talent.

People may be taking potshots at the tournament, but as a fan, if you look at the lineups, you should be very happy. As a Brasil fan, even more so. Ronaldo was out for 2 years, I haven't seen anyone clamoring about not being able to see Rivaldo while he's been on the bench, Cafu's replacement SHOULD be playing right now, Gilberto is a good but rather bland player that won't be missed in entertainment value, and Roberto Carlos..well, you've seen him all year long with Madrid and Brasil is so freaking deep at left back it's nice to see anyone back there. Who else is missing from what would be your current World Cup squad that you really want to see? Give me a break.

    Ok, rant over.

Confed. Cup is good. You don't get to see national teams play so much. Don't be on the side of the clubs - I don't think many people understand some of the main reasons the clubs are against it. They (UEFA clubs) don't want their star players to participate. But they are okay with their marginal players participating - as long as good prospects from other confederations are there - like good players from South America, Asia, North America and Africa.

Reminder: Please do not start new threads and post the results. Please keep the Brazil vs. Cameroon result in the new thread that I have created. Thanks!

OMG! Ilan is starting in the place of Alex! Can you fucking believe this?! Or are they indeed not taking this tournament seriously or Parreira is a complete idiot!

Well, at least Turkey didn't get their revenge!

Other than that no comment on: Turkey's second goal and Alex's brilliant play after coming in off the bench!

Well, we're out. Funny thing that Brazil played the best match of the 3 we played in this tournament. But if we're eliminated is because of the mistakes Parreira made in the first 2 matches. Not that there weren't mistakes in today's match - once again Alex was subed in, and improved the game, when it was too late.

In fact I'm a little glad that we were eliminated earlier the way we were. This could be the begining of Parreira's downfall, but I serioulsy doubt he will be fired before the bad results in the WCQs start to show up. After all he has hot-backs inside CBF. At least we can expect the pressure from the media and the CBF boss for some mentality-change starting from now on. I have no doubt that we will struggle if we continue with this philosophy.

Another good point - and the media has some of the blame on this - is that we may stop with this belief that even Brazil's C-D teams are good enough to compete and win any tournament. We tend to forget that inexperience, CBF disorganization - and the coach - play a major factor when it's for real. We must bring all the big guns we can when there's something at stake.
