I never even thought of this until a recent string of emails. A friend told me I needed to come home since the entire country of France has become so despicable...I reminded him of the Confederations Cup, to which another friend responded: "You do know we're going to boycott that, right?" Has the political tension and propaganda reached such heights over there that we would go that far?
Geez, I would hope not, Flan. Simple equation: Sports + politics = oil + water In other words, a very bad mix. Or have we really learned anything since the 1980 Olympic boycott? That's something which backfired badly... In all likelihood, I'd say a boycott has nil chance of happening, regardless of American-French relations and positions on the current events relating to you-know-what in the Persian Gulf.
Our players will probably receive a very cold reception in France if we go. Of course the French enjoy thumbing there noses at us anyway. The current political climate just gives them an excuse.
hell no, that is the stupidiest thing i have ever heard... you think our government cares about a soccer tournament? heck, listening to GW talk to 'the bruce' at the WC made it apparent that he in reality had no clue who he was talking to...
Re: Re: Confederations Cup Boycott possible? Yeah, I'm not sure what sort of statement that's gonna make. I would think we'd be safe.
If France boycotts it's because they don't want to make bigger embarrassments of themselves than they did in the World Cup.
What TheSlipperyOne said. I doubt any boycott is going to happen. Keep sports and politics separate whenever possible.
