FIFA planning on bringing Confederations Cup back to be played every 4 years. Not only did they expand CWC now they want Confederations back! So....for example it could look something like this; 2026 WC, 2027 Confederations Cup, 2028 free year for now, 2029 CWC, 2030 WC, 2031 Confederations Cup, 2032 free year for now etc. Call Infantino greedy AF but man knows how to create excitement! Hyped if true! This should give CONCACAF Gold Cup more meaning over CONCACAF Nations League. Either get rid of Nations League or go to 4 years for Gold Cup but....it's CONCACAF.
If it's true IMO it would be better if they gave a spot to the hosting nation and replaced them with the Europe Nations League winners. Since it is a smaller tournament they can rotate Continents every 4 years to avoid having the WC host also host Confederations Cup. You don't need that many big stadiums as they are needed for a WC and you don't need multiple host as they are only 8 teams. For example; 2026 WC US/Mexico/Canada and in 2027 give CONMEBOL or CAF or AFC the Confederations Cup and pick one country from there. Every year there will be a tournament in each Continent. Either the WC, CWC or Confederations Cup.
I love the Confederations Cup. Without it, we wouldn’t have this in our lives (I don’t think it was called Confederations Cup at the time, but same thing…):
I love the idea of the Confeds Cup and have bittersweet memories of us being in it. But man the fixture congestion is getting out of control. Especially true for Concacaf because we have (for whatever reason) the GC every two years.
As much as I'd love to bring back the Confederations Cup.... Anyone reporting this besides "Futbol de Inglaterra"?
Yeah if this would kill the extra Gold Cup once and for all I'd be for it but I doubt that's the case.
Knowing FIFA and CONCACAF, I wouldn't be too shocked if they want to play the Confederations Cup, Club World Cup, and Gold Cup in the same summer. It'd be awful, but not extremely surprising.
CONCACAF only benefits from the Gold Cup, so I don't think it is going away. FIFA will stagger the other two. This year looks to be beyond an utter disaster attendance wise, so maybe they will relent on the insane pricing.
Though they used to do it the same summer, we would just send a B team to the Gold Cup and an A team to the Confed Cup when we were in it. See the 2009 Gold Cup final where we lost 5-0 to Mexico.
It’s the pricing but also playing midday during the week for some of the games for the European TV window. And playing some of the games in big NFL stadiums when they shouldn’t based on whose playing (as not every team is as much of a draw).
1. I hope the CWC dies. In the alternative I hope USMNT players don't play for clubs involved. 2. Stop making players play so many games. 3. I actually like the CC but then make GC every 4 years instead of two.
I think it’s definitely not going to die and it’s not a bad tournament. But I do agree that they are piling up far too many games on these players.
I don’t know the problem is no one has incentive to cut games. The Club World Cup definitely isn’t going away. I just hope the next one is not the US. I feel like we’re just going to keep seeing more and more international tournaments here for the same reason every Gold Cup is played here.
After the Copa disaster,,FIFA probably is leaning into a WC dry run. Though I thought CWC was doing that now. BTW, the Intercontinental Cup (in the old CWC format) is still a thing and will be played in December. But I'd love Confed Cup back, at least we might care about Gold Cup every other year again.
I would hope that the 2nd Gold Cup can be dumped if FIFA tries to bring back the Confederations Cup and keep the Club World Cup going. I would expect that there would be a way to make the math to be doable for smaller CONCACAF federations that want the relative influx of Gold Cup money. And smaller CONCACAF federations have plenty of competitive fixtures now in the Nations League era.
