http://www.concacaf.com/view_article.asp?id=3360 Here is a quote from that website that doesn't make sense: "The winners of these two groups, along with the three qualifiers from the Caribbean, will join Canada and the host USA in the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ in November. The six-team Women’s Gold Cup..." This describes seven teams but says the tournament has six teams.
Re: CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Qualifying Question I think they meant eight teams will make the Gold Cup finals - USA, Mexico, Canada, 3 Caribbean teams, and 2 Central American teams. That's how it was structured in 2002, I believe. The first Women's Gold Cup (in 2000) had six teams from the region and two from other confederations, but that wasn't a WC qualifying year.
Re: CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Qualifying Question It is actually only 6 teams. Not sure why they reduced it from 8 to 6 teams. Doesn't make sense. Anyway, here's the complete schedule, along with preliminary results from the caribbean section. Caribbean Qualification(also know as Women's Caribbean Cup) Preliminary Round Barbados vs. Antigua & Barbuda 14 March Barbados 0 - Antigua & Barbuda 1 [in St. Micheals] [Henry 80'] 18 March Antigua & Barbuda 0 - Barbados 0 [in Antigua] Cayman Islands vs. Dutch Antilles March 18 Cayman Islands 1 - Dutch Antilles 2 [in Georgetown] March 25 Dutch Antilles 1 - Cayman Islands 0 [in Curacao] US Virgin Islands vs. British Virgin Islands April 1 British Virgin Islands 1 - US Virgin Islands 3 [in Virgin Gorda, BVI] [Gregg 47'; Taylor 27', 90', McManaman 36'] April 9 US Virgin Islands vs. British Virgin Islands [in St. Thomas, USVI] Guyana vs. Grenada [Guyana withdrew] Bahamas vs. Turks & Caicos Islands [Bahamas withdrew] Montserrat vs. St. Kitts & Nevis [Montserrat withdrew] First Round Group A: 4-8 May in Dominican Republic Bermuda Dominican Republic Turks & Caicos Islands British Virgin Islands/US Virgin Islands Group B: 3-7 May in Aruba Aruba Haiti Netherlands Antilles Surinam Group C: 8-12 May in Jamaica Antigua & Barbuda Jamaica St. Kitts & Nevis St. Lucia Group D: 19-23 May in Trinidad & Tobago Trinidad & Tobago Dominica Grenada St. Vincent & The Grenadines Group winners advance to Quadrangular Finals: 6-10 September at TBD Top 2 advance to Gold Cup finals Central American Qualification Group A: 10-14 May in Mexico Mexico El Salvador Nicaragua Group B: 24-28 May in Panama Panama Costa Rica Guatemala [Honduras & Belize did not enter] Group winners advance to Gold Cup Finals Women's Gold Cup Finals: USA(hosts), Canada, two from CFU & two from UNCAF. Re: CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Qualifying Question Thank you. They like drawing Grenada and Guyana together; in addition to this where Guyana withdrew they played each other in Men's World Cup Qaulifying.
Re: CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Qualifying Question There should be an asterisk in there as Mexico will be participating in the UNCAF tournament, and will almost certainly take one of those two spots.
Re: CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Qualifying Question The 2002 Gold Cup featured 8 teams and 16 games played as 8 doubleheaders over 14 days in four cities. If they, as someone in the USWNT forum said, play it as a World Club Cup style single elimination tournament then there will only be 6 teams and six games that could be played as 3 doubleheaders in as little as five days. The latter tournament would cost a small fraction of the former - especially with the elimination of most of the travel and by condensing the time frame.
Re: CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Qualifying Question Dont focus just on the Gold Cup , this is also the World Cup qualifiers for 2007 ! "The six-team Women’s Gold Cup™, which will crown the CONCACAF champion, will also qualify two nations to the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China. The third-place finisher from the CONCACAF event will face an Asian team in a home-and-away playoff for the final berth to the FIFA tournament."
Gold Cup CARIBBEAN QUALIFICATIONS GROUP A May 4 Dominican Rep. 3 - US Virgin Is. 1 Bermuda 4 - Turks & Caicos 0 GROUP B(Haiti withdrew) May 3 Surinam 7 - Dutch Antilles 1
6TH May GROUP A Bermuda 4-1 United States Virgin Islands Dominican Republic 5-0 Turks & Caicos Islands Dominican Republic and Bermuda clash tomorrow for the group, with both teams having identical 2-0-0 records and identical 8-1 goal difference.
I expect they will be joined by Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago without question. Todays game between Dominican Republic and Bermuda will be interesting, and it is too difficult to say who will qualify from these two. So, from here, the Caribbean teams are whittled down to 2 from 4, and these 2 teams go forward to the 6 team CONCACAF Gold Cup with USA, Canada, and most probably Mexico and Costa Rica. I've been keeping an eye on the Panama-Costa Rica-Guatemala qualifying that is starting soon and have been in touch with a few contacts I have in Panama (from working with their U19s in Ottawa), and it looks like they are really hoping to give CR a run for the money next week. Some good links for stories/pictures for those interested: http://www.marearoja.com http://www.todosports.com Both sites have some recent news articles and photos from the last week, and I would assume would continue to post things up to and after the games.

24 May in Panama Guatemala 2-1 Costa Rica A bit of a shock in the first game of the triangular. Guatemala won through a 93rd minute penalty. 26 May - Panama v Costa Rica 28 May - Panama v Guatemala
Wow, totally surprised to see CR struggling so much. Looked like the game vs. Panama was quite a barnburner. Who would have thought it would be Guatemala-Panama to determine the last C.American spot for the Gold Cup? Definitely pulling for Panama!
