Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions NOTE: the Group Matches (both semis and hex) are NOT two-match total point legs like the June round, as one might suppose after reading above. Each game is a separate match...the goals for and against are only relevant if there are equal points in the tables. Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions beach, you do know that we haven't lost to Jamaica in like......forever.
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions Yeah, sorry about that, but I put it like that to make it easier to keep track of what matchups I had already predicted, since I did like Honduras vs Costa Rica, both matches, and then another two teams, etc until I got them all done and it was just easier to record "Honduras defeats Costa Rica 3-2 (HT 1-1, AW 2-1)" than anything else. Then when I am done I can just look at the stats and see that from this matchup Honduras gets 4 points, Costa Rica gets 1 point, add them up and go on to the next match up.
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions not gonna go all crazy like the above since it's pointless..but I'm gonna call Haiti knocking out Jamaica.
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions True my friend. Jamaica did tie the US in the US for the '97 Hex. And they have had some awesome friendlies lately, and an incredible strike force. I think they will be the suprise of the WCQ. I think they will beat the US at least once in the semis, though i think the US will be stronger in the hex. As for Haiti. I know that a lot of Americans like them because they tied the US in March, but they just don't have the organization to advance. The March result was a one-off after they had some intense practice together, whereas the US team was just an off-season come-together. I realize that my predictionns are not too realistic in that there are not enough ties, but I can only make far-off predictions match by match.
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions If St. Vincent and the Grenadines has a win they will have at least 3 points.
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions I whish one of you can post the games for weekend #1 only that will be easier to predict....games for june 12 and 13th ONLY the guys with the right score will get a 1.5pt the guys with the right result will get 1pt - and then WE GET A NICE CONTEST!

Interesting reading. The two things that jumped out at me where: ES isn't that strong. I think they are the likeliest team to be upset in the first round and I exect them to be bottom of their sf group if they get there. At the same Panama isn't that bad. They're also tough at home. I'd give them six or seven points at home in the SF round (yes I think they could draw the US at home) and finish with that many. They shouldn't challenge for second, but they'll get more than one point says I. cheers, hobbes
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions Based on those results El Salvador would have 9 points (not 8) and Trinidad and Tobago would have 11 points (not 10).
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions Doh. What surprises me is that you caught that, but didn't catch that I had Jamaica playing in the Hex despite finishing third in their semi group behind El Salvador.

Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions wow! that is a real guessing game! can we slow down and post week per week?
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions Just curious, but how did you come up with Saudi Arabia as the 5th place Asian team?
Re: Beachesl's WCQ Predicitions Just a prediction, since they're the 5th best team in Asia at the moment IMO (not that that neccesarily means they'll be in the playoff because of Asia's qualifying format--Japan, South Korea, Iran, China, and Saudi Arabia could theoretically all be drawn into the same finals group, from which the top 2 qualify and the 3rd plays off against the 3rd from the other group for the right to go to the CONCACAF playoff). Plus, the playoff is in the winter IIRC and I'd love to see the Saudis have to play in Edmonton in February.
Asia-CONCACAF Half-Place Playoff Heeheeehee, I'd love to see that, too. FIFA ain't gonna allow that to happen, you could bet the farm on that. Even in mid-November, when the playoff would occur, Edmonton will probably be well below freezing, so it would have to be Vancouver. FIFA did allow the Maldives-Mongolia preliminary round leg to be played in a sub-zero Ulan Bator, but at this level, you know there will be a pronouncemnt from Zurich if Edmonton would be nominated by the CSA. Probably only Vancouver would be acceptable, even with it's very small stadium. It depends on how the final Asian Groups are drawn, Japan and S. Korea will be the seeds at the top of each Group. IF Saudi is in with either Iran or China, then I think a 3rd place Final Group finish is in the cards, and I think they have too much depth not to triumph against the other 3rd place Asian in the final group in the first playoff. In CONCACAF, I would expect that the depth of CR , Mex and the US would give them the top 3 spots, and the 4th playoff spot would be between Jamaica and the semi advancer from Canada/Honduras/Guatemala. Trinidad and Tobago will easily get to the hex, but will be lucky to get consolation points. But, prognosticating what would happen in the actual November 2005 playoff is just too difficult. So, I think dfb's guess is a generally good one.

Re: Asia-CONCACAF Half-Place Playoff Can FIFA do that? I don't think FIFA can dictate to a team where it can play its home games, unless there is a safety concern either due to past fan behavior or due to the nature of the stadium or the field. There are other criteria for acceptable home venues, but I'm 99.9% sure weather isn't one of them (especially since the game will be scheduled several months out, and for all FIFA knows Edmonton will be experiencing an unseasonable warm spell in November 2005). Edmonton will be very cold but so was Columbus when we played Mexico there in 2001 (wasn't at that game but it was about 15-20 Farenheit IIRC). And of course FIFA allows teams like Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Nepal to play their home games at ridiculous altitudes. I don't think FIFA would have any justification for trying to force you guys to play the game in Vancouver. If you do get to play your playoff against a warm-weather team (and realistically, that would be pretty much anyone from Asia that can make the playoff aside from China), you'll have fun. After seeing the US-Mexico game on TV and being at a US-El Salvador game in sub-freezing temperatures the day after a blizzard in Boston in 1997, I know that seeing players and, better yet, fans from countries where the temperature never gets below 75 freeze their asses off and slip and slide around on snow and ice is a damn good time. I didn't realize Japan and Korea will definitely be separated. I'd disagree about CR, simply because Sampson is a horrible coach. Bruce and Frank are absolutely brilliant, Bora is pretty good, and Mexico has a lot more talent than Costa Rica. I don't think Costa Rica will make it to the Hex (in fact I think Cuba will knock them off on PKs in the first round).
Re: Asia-CONCACAF Half-Place Playoff We had an Olympic Qualifying against in Kelowna, British Colombia (in the sunny dry Okanagan, the California of Canada) in November and they had unseasonably cold and snowy weather. The comments from the Sallies were pretty funny See the pics: http://www.canadian-soccer.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1721&SearchTerms=Kelowna You are right that there is no rule against cold weather games, but the sites can be overuled after nominated under the competition regulations, that is the reason for the notices. We know now that FIFA is unpredictable and will go to any lengths to avoid disputes, and a half-spot playoff is too high a profile. The Asian Football have said that the final round will be seeded like the semi-round, so as the rankings go now (and they are not likely to change between now and November), they should be heading separate groups. I agree about your comments about Sampson, but CR still has too much depth and playing there, even without Saprissa, is intimidating. Cuba has been struggling since the Gold Cup. Honduras is always powerful, but the results and the scuttlebutt from Honduras indicates that they may have trouble and Bora may finally get stuck in the mud. Who knows.
Re: Asia-CONCACAF Half-Place Playoff I love it! So FIFA can actually call up the CSA and say "No, we're not going to let you play your home leg in Edmonton, find someplace else"?? That's ridiculous...each country should be allowed to use its own natural resources. It's part of the game. Saying Canada can't play your games in Edmonton because it's too cold is ridiculous, especially when FIFA doesn't do anything about teams like Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador playing their home games at ridiculous altitudes. And in any event, if you guys do wind up playing Saudi Arabia you might have an ally in FIFA--there's no doubt in my mind that they'd much rather have Canada playing in the Cup than the Saudis, for security reasons. Honduras got their asses whooped by us last night, but Bora will whip them into shape in time (when he's not too busy running for President against Dubya). CR has depth, which will help them in the semis and the Hex if they advance, but it won't help them that much in the preliminary round (unless they get hit with a lot of injuries). If Cuba can stay within a goal or even 2 at the Saprissa, they are more than capable of winning in Havana (remember that CR lost in Barbados last time around, and Cuba is better than Barbados) and taking the series, particularly if they get an away goal. And if it goes to penalties, it's a crapshoot as we all know. CR needs to win by at least 3 goals at home to be absolutely certain of winning the series. Of course, while I've made my predictions, I'd be surprised but not shocked if some team comes out of nowhere and does very well in the Hex, possibly even making the playoff (Haiti?).
If Jamaica holds Mexico to only 2 goals in Mexico, no other team will be able to beat them home or away | .
