Both the USA and Honduras were hosting in those games the excuse of soft goals reads so weak I am surprised you even took the time to write it given in both cases it wasn't just a soft goal in one game but rather poor performances in multiple games. If Honduras and the USA had played well in their other game then the soft goal excuse might carry some water but as it is it was just a bad permanence overall in qualifiers by both Honduras and the USA at home that kept them out not just one soft goal
USA wins 2 - 1 over Haiti. The USA did not look good at all defensively, Haiti can't shoot otherwise this should have been at least a 2-2 game. Next Canada vs Cuba.

People didn't think anything after the CR game.. wasn't till the Nicaragua game people became to realize that yes the team played bad. CR game 0-0 is fairly normal for both sides, was an entertaining game and both teams played fairly well. They didn't play well in the OLYMPICS.. but not many will say USA lost to Canada cuz they didn't play well. The Goalie was just superman that day. Mara anything else?
