The newest CONCACAF rankings were quietly released. https://www.concacaf.com/rankings/men-s-national-team/ They are as of 08/01/2021 - which I believe means that the Gold Cup final was not included??????? Oh CONCACAF CONCACAF RANKING INDEX As of August 1, 2021 1 Mexico MEX 2,109 +32 (A1) 2 United States USA 1,949 +61 (A1) 3 Canada CAN 1,682 +45 (A1) 4 Costa Rica CRC 1,650 +17 (A1) 5 Honduras HON 1,584 -14 (A2) 6 Jamaica JAM 1,537 -17 (A2) 7 Panama PAN 1,503 -26 (A2) 8 Haiti HAI 1,448 +17 (B1) 9 El Salvador SLV 1,433 +11 (A2) 10 Guatemala GUA 1,383 -58 (B1) 11 Curaçao CUW 1,247 0 (A3) 12 Trinidad & Tobago TRI 1,244 +16 (B1) 13 Martinique MTQ 1,237 -50 (A3) 14 Suriname SUR 1,090 +13 (A3) 15 Cuba CUB 1,088 0 (B1) 16 Guadeloupe GLP 1,033 -30 (B2) 17 French Guiana GUF 1,030 +11 (B2) 18 Nicaragua NCA 973 0 (B2) 19 Bermuda BER 973 +9 (B2) 20 Antigua and Barbuda ATG 953 0 (B3) 21 St. Kitts & Nevis SKN 930 0 (C1) 22 Guyana GUY 911 -12 (B3) 23 Dominican Republic DOM 872 0 (B3) 24 St. Vincent & the Grenadines VIN 865 -11 (B3) 25 Grenada GRN 855 -23 (A3) 26 Belize BLZ 811 0 (B4) 27 Montserrat MSR 767 -14 (B4) 28 Puerto Rico PUR 725 0 (C1) 29 Bonaire BOE 718 0 (C1) 30 St. Lucia LCA 709 0 (C1) 31 Barbados BRB 700 -23 (B4) 32 Dominica DMA 625 0 (C2) 33 Bahamas BAH 557 -12 (B4) 34 Aruba ARU 530 0 (C2) 35 Cayman Islands CAY 512 0 (C2) 36 Turks and Caicos Islands TCA 448 0 (C2) 37 Saint Martin SMN 388 0 (C3) 38 Sint Maarten SXM 296 0 (C3) 39 US Virgin Islands VIR 246 0 (C3) 40 Anguilla AIA 176 0 (C3) 41 British Virgin Islands VGB 169 0 (C3)
You sure about that? Remember that as far as FIFA are concerned, the Martinique game doesn't count...
Yes that is not including any non-FIFA matches. There haven't been any rankings since May. In that time the US has won two continental tournaments.
In USA Men, somebody said USA will be 9th. USA hasn't been in the Top 10 since they were 5th in May 2006. After getting 1 point in the World Cup, USA fell to 16th. By the end of 2006, USA was 31st. Mexico was 4th in May 2006, so that was the last time Concacaf had two of the Top 10. Costa Rica's best month was 13th on February and March 2015. Like USA, they had a big fall. Costa Rica fell from 14th in June 2015 to 41st in July. July 2015 was a horrible month for Concacaf as they wouldn't have gotten any spots in a World Cup based on the Rankings because USA led Concacaf in 34th.
r/soccer was a little salty that the US was going to be 9th (I'm pretty sure it will be 10th) which was fun to read. Do I think the US is a top 10 team in the World? No. But they won every game this summer including two confederation tournaments. Of course the ranking system rewarded them for that.
I don't have to post the top ten in Concacaf because they match what code1930 posted. Concacaf combined to gain 20 spots. Anguilla fell behind San Marino and is last. 11 teams (31.4 percent) are in the top half. USA's 93 points gained were second to Italy. Grenada lost 43.54 points, which was the most in the world. FIFA mentioned guest Qatar moved up 16 spots to 42nd, and Puerto Rico did well enough in friendlies to move up 7 to 171st. https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13372 has the rankings.
There is no way the USA is top 10 at all. USA/Mexico football rivalry aside, there is absolutely no way. They have not beaten a CONMEBOL team in years and they beat Northern Ireland and they are top 10 over CONMEBOL and UEFA teams? Tell me that FIFA/CONCACAF is corrupt without telling me that they are corrupt comes to mind.
Probably 15 to 20, but the lack of inter-confederation matches since 2018 mostly due to the pandemic and the introduction of Nation Leagues in UEFA and CONCACAF has made it difficult to compare teams in that range.
I think most USMNT fans are pretty realistic about their position right now. They're over-ranked by FIFA, but whatever....................... The USMNT is on an 18 game unbeaten run in CONCACAF. Raking in points in the Nations League, Gold Cup, and WCQers. Since the COVID restart the USMNT has won more trophies than games they've lost. They've lost one game (on the road at Switzerland). But does that mean they're actually the 10th best team in the World right now? No. I don't think anybody believes that. Yes, they've beaten Mexico twice recently. Both on US soil. Both were draws after regular time. If those were WCQers, they would have been better results for Mexico.
I know I mentioned this in another thread but here it is again. What have we heard all of this past month leading into this window. "CONCACAF road games in Central America are tough". What has the US not played since 2017? A road game in Central America. They don't qualify for the Gold Cup. They host the Gold Cup. Sure the Mexico final has more Mexican fans but it was in Las Vegas. They might get one or two if the NL draw goes that way which it didn't last time. So the US will probably have an over-inflated FIFA ranking while they continue to play almost all of their meaningful games in the US outside of the WC qual cycle.
I don't think these points get nearly enough consideration when people discuss the perceived lack of progress for the USA or underperformance. I think the consistent lack of meaningful road games really hurts our development/experience and give a false sense of where the team's really at.
Here are the Top 10 in Concacaf in the September 2021 FIFA Rankings: 9. Mexico (even) 13. USA (down 3) 44. Costa Rica (even) 51. Canada (up 8) 59. Jamaica (down 9) 63. Honduras (even) 65. El Salvador (down 1) 68. Panama (up 6) 79. Curacao (down 1) 87. Haiti (up 3) Panama gained 23.92 points, which was the second most points gained behind Libya. Trinidad and Tobago is the only other Concacaf team in the top half. 24 teams (68.6 percent) are in the bottom half. With Cook Islands unranked due to inactivity, there are 210 teams in the FIFA Rankings, and the mean rank is 105.5. The Concacaf mean is 136.9, and 22 teams (62.9 percent) are worse than the Concacaf mean. The only Concacaf team to play teams in another confederation in September was Haiti, who lost to Bahrain 6-1 on September 1, and beat Jordan 2-0 three days later, with both games in Bahrain. Haiti lost 0.33 points. Games within a confederation are zero-sum so the sum of the points for all of Concacaf was down 0.33.
Here are the Top 10 in Concacaf in the October 2021 FIFA Rankings: 9. Mexico (even) 13. USA (even) 45. Costa Rica (down 1) 48. Canada (up 3) 59. Jamaica (even) 65. El Salvador (even) 68. Honduras (down 5) 69. Panama (down 1) 81. Curacao (down 2) 86. Haiti (up 1) Congratulations to Canada for their first month in the top 50 since they were 48th in August 1997. Concacaf teams combined to drop 18 spots, which is about 0.5 per team. Canada, Haiti, and Turks and Caicos Islands (206th to 205th) were the only teams to move up.
Here are the Top 10 in Concacaf in the November 2021 FIFA Rankings: 12. USA (up 1, up 1 in Concacaf) 14. Mexico (down 5, down 1 in Concacaf) 40. Canada (up 8, up in 1 Concacaf) 49. Costa Rica (down 4, down 1 in Concacaf) 57. Jamaica (up 2) 63. Panama (up 6, up 2 in Concacaf, second most points gained in the world) 69. El Salvador (down 4, down 1 in Concacaf) 76. Honduras (down 8, down 1 in Concacaf) 80. Curacao (up 1) 87. Haiti (down 1) USA leads Concacaf for the first time since July 2015. Before this, Costa Rica led Concacaf more recently than USA, which was from November 2016 through January 2017. Congratulations to Canada for tying their best rank ever in December 1996. Concacaf teams combined to gain 5 spots. Concacaf has 11 of 35 teams (31.4 percent) in the top half, which is the worst other than Oceania, albeit Concacaf's top two are stronger than Asia's and Africa's. With the way Canada is playing now, Concacaf is arguably more likely to have three teams in the World Cup Round of 16 than Asia or Africa. I do not know if FIFA will make rankings the next two months. They could wait until February after games in January and February.
