I was kind of thinking the same thing. The first goal was the result of leaving Sinclair unmarked 12 yards out and right in front of goal dead center. How do you fail to find the #1 goal scorer of all time alone in front of goal? The second was simply lazy play on the part of the defenders and, even more so, the goalkeeper.

It is still close but Mexico will have to raise their game even above how they started to get three which is what it will take for them to win the group.

Hate to see Mexico go down like that, the llast goal could of been prevented if only the ref called the foul on Schmidt(who.collided with López thus sending the latter to the sidelines due to getting hurt). But it showed that Mexico didn’t have the physicality to go along with no speed to play at a higher level needed vs top sides.
Their newer/famed league is giving them mixed results; while it’s helped them produce stronger, youth programs, quality wise, the league is over extended with 18 teams with way too many teens & still a foreign ban on non Mexican heritage players, often producing the ‘one type style’ that even hampers their men’s side.
Not even sure if they had all their best to players on this roster, missing; Coral, Noyola, Romero, Ocampo & the CB voted mvp of the last u20 Concacaf champ. Miriam Garcia(though at least they did have a decent CB combo in this tourney)
It be a miracle if they can beat the US or even keep the loosing score down as the latter with its ‘direct’ attacks will come at them with twice the shot selections as Canada did.

Oh thats pretty surprising they banned non Mexican heritage players into their clubs. Sounds racist.

    I think:

No, not racist -- there are Mexican heritage players of all races. Rather, it's in the same realm as the NWSL's foreign player limit, but allowing foreign players of Mexican heritage and, on the other hand, not allowing other players. Nationalist, but not racist.

As I wrote, this is what I think. If someone actually knows the exact rule and I'm wrong, please correct me.

I'm no expert but the original rule, as I understand it, was that you had to be born in Mexico to play in the women's league. Now, they've modified the rules to allow up to six players of Mexican origin, but born elsewhere, on each team.

So, yeah, the rules of the Mexican league are nationalistic and clearly designed to prevent US-born players from dominating the league.

Speaking of rules, why is Macario who has lived in the US about 10 years prevented by FIFA, I suppose, from playing on the U.S. National team, while FIFA rules permit US-born players to migrate to foreign teams because of a tenuous relationship to the foreign country? Maybe it's time to have a "Macario rule" to deal with players in her situation?

That's one long and foggy sentence in the preceding paragraph. A creative writing teacher teacher would whip me with a wet noodle.

It’s really to develop more Mexican youth players, as not sure how their exact infrastructure is, but it’s females most likely don’t get to play rec or school or select/travel soccer, so their only chance is getting picked up by one of these men’s pro clubs. Then, most these ladies are only getting supplemental income(rather real. than salaries) so its easier to get assimilated into Mexican society(obviously all the teens they got playing. But it does isolate their style/they really could use some speedier Caribbean players on those MX/La Lega clubs.
The men’s pro clubs taking charge is relatively new( their so called pro league, less than 3 years. What I don’t get; why was Mexico was looking so good ten years ago when average loss to the US was only 0-1, 0-2 and had that huge victory in 2010 in WC qualifiers?

My inexpert answer is that in 2010 Mexico had Maribel Dominguez on its team and she was a world-class striker. Mexico has no comparable strikers now and good forwards such as Monica Ocampo and Charlyn Corral aren't even on the current Mexican team. Why I don't know.

Secondly, Leonardo Cuellar was the coach until 2016 and he was awful. A lot of players, such as Corral wouldn't play for him. And he threw Stefany Mayor and Bianca Sierra off the team because they were a gay couple!

Several years ago I though Mexico would become a world power in WoSO, but it hasn't happened. Maybe Mexico is the WoSo power of the future -- and always will be. (That's a joke.)

I do not know about the situation but according to Wikipedia she has yet to receive American citizenship, and citizenship is a base requirement even for sports with much more lenient rules to plays for a nation than FIFA (well most of sports anyway).

And they did have previously Morales, the crafty midfielder of Chivas

I was going to ask on your other post; is it really a good thing if Macario plays for the US? She’s got the ability to become the worlds best player for the whole decade, but It means more US domination and I’m not sure if that’s necessarily a good thing as tv ratings for woso have fallen dangerously low in our own country(only 166k for the NWSL final on ESPN) so Americans aren’t tuning in do to the lack of competition? Other countries are loosing interest as well as I was surprised to read an French article which claimed there’s three times as many female participants in basketball than soccer in their own country(which is pretty much the same for a lot of other countries as well)Macario could boost interest in Brazil(if she only plays for their NT) since they also became somewhat stagnant in woso

Tania Morales of Chivas is a favorite of mine. Wild hair, very distinctive look and play.

I understand that Macario wants to play for the US -- but it wouldn't bother me to see her play for Brazil. I want to see her on the pitch. Somewhere. Soon.

Yes, but citizenship rules are pretty flexible in some countries. You can become a citizen of some countries if you have a parent or even grandparent who was a citizen. Last I heard, you could purchase citizenship in Belize for 100,000 dollars or so. Some rich people have passports in several countries. Just in case.....

I wouldn't say the victory was "huge" in the sense that Mexico greatly outperformed the US on the field that day. That said, the generation of players active around 2010 had developed in a time when most nations treated WoSo as an afterthought, (i.e. developed pre-WPS and pre-UWCL,) but the current generation of players were developing when Mexico didn't care but other nations were starting to put more effort in. That's why you don't see players currently on Mexico's team that match the likes of Dominguez, Worbis, Saucedo, and Tajonar - and Ocampo certainly isn't at her prime any more. It's also maybe worth pointing out that the team went through a time when they simply weren't playing very often; several of the players from that 2010/2011 team retired with over 100 caps, but both Ocampo and Corral, two players from those teams that are still playing, don't have 100 (Ocampo is close at 90-something, but Corral has only 50-some in over 10yrs of being with the team). So this current generation may be missing chemistry as well.

The US is not one of those countries, though. X-D Even before the current administration made it clear they wanted to make citizenship tougher, it was already a byzantine system here.

But yes, my understanding was that Macario wants to play for the US and has refused invitations from Brazil. She's currently eligible for the Brazil squad and not currently eligible for the US, but she has already represented the US at the youth level multiple times.

Surprised it's still at 0-0. Canada not looking strong while Costa Rica just seems to be keeping pace.

Can this confederation get any more exciting?

    Canada 1 - 0 Costa Rica - (Huitema 72')

Canada and the U.S. qualify to the Tokyo tournament. In the late game the U.S. beat Mexico, settling the contest mostly with 2 early goals. The hosts' positional play was good, but no more - it didn't need to be great, as Mexico seemed disorganized at times and lost two goals on setpieces. El Tri Femenil only had any joy down the right side, with Daniela Espinosa catching Crystal Dunn out a few times.

    USA 4 - 0 Mexico

Not to mention that Mexico exhausted themselves by trying for the win against Canada a couple days ago.

the recent Guardian top 100 poll; 15 USA rostered players made the list, only 2 Canadians, so if we go by that list, who you think's going to win the championship game?

didn't get to watch either semis, after all the Dem. debates were on about the same time.........which prompt me to go into a nice, deep sleep(as Buttigieg ain't no JFK, but got my vote)

looking at the Canadian linuep vs Mexico, they definitely went for experience over youth with starting the oldies, but not so goodies, Sinclair, Chapman, Schmidt, Scott & Labbe. Against the US, they got to get a bit more speed in. Don't know why their coach hasn't played their speedier wides much?(Prince & Rose) & then Adriana Leon, looked so much more impressive then the slowpoke, Sinclair, when they both started at fwd in the S&K match, but after scoring 4 goals in the opening game, Leon's barely played minutes since. If the US comes out with an 4-3-3, I would too, this be my starting lineup
    ...............................................Sheridan
    Riviere..............Buchanen...............Zadorski..............Lawrence

    ...........Quinn.........................Fleming...................Beckie

    ..........Prince................... ....Leon.......................Rose

Lawrence is my fav CA player, she's a top notch defender, plus can play any position. Though some might say she's needed upfront, she's the only one that can stop the otherwise destructive path of those twin hurricanes, Heath or Williams. The midfield might look a little weak, but thats why Buchanen needs to step up & become an DM when needed/on offense; you can always high ball it over the midfield ala Wiegman did it for the Orange ala the Euro 2017.

Now watch the Ca coach do everything different than I described, lol

    And now

    "The Nonsense Game"
...ok, ok, the End-of-Tournament Friendly where the winners get a trophy and medal for QUALIFYING for an event where the main prize is only a medal

    Canada 0 - 3 USA - (Williams 60, Horan 71, Rapinoe 87)

Joking aside, the US looked a lot stronger than Canada in this one; CAN could've suffered a Japan/Brazil-type blowout or worse, but the hosts just lacked the final touch in the first hour. With Canada, the thing I found surprising and disappointing was how conservatively they approached the games, without much risk or invention (you're a top 10 team... do a stepover or something!) It allows them to defeat teams up to a certain level, but here it just seemed like a hindrance.

Its really more like Wales taking on England(how many times had Wales won?). So what could expect from Canada with 9 times less the population but brought up the same eco soccer system as the US?(private select/travel clubs, high school & college teams). Plus do to the harsher winters they got, even just players(Rapinoe, Morgan, Press, eccedra) from the state of California(about the same population) would of beaten them. Possibly loose also to New Jersey(pop 15 mill) where Lloyd, Heath & O’Hara came from.

I blame the coach for this approach. You have the tournament's Golden booth and you bench her. 18 years old Jordyn Huitema is absolutely clinical and aggressive up front. She's leagues ahead of Sinclair when they were the same age...but didn't start the game...
Herdman had a much different approach. To be fair, they did play well in the first half.

Also, let's not forget that we have no women's league. The Canadian Premier League are currently working on a Tier 1 for women. This will bring significant changes.

Interesting to see that Katie Johnson (CRS) did not play for Mexico in the OLY qualification games. Was she simply not chosen by the coach? Was she not interested? Was she injured? I look forward to see what role she will have in 2020 for CRS. She made some fantastic assists in 2019 and she may play more of a role in scoring goals with Sam Kerr gone. She did score a game winning goal against HOU in the 2019 season (only goal of that game, too).
