The last U.S. appearance in Foxborough was on May 19th, 2002, in the team's final tune-up before the World Cup, as the U.S. lost to Holland, 2-0. The CONCACAF Gold Cup, which has grown from eight teams in 1991 to 12 in its last edition in 2002, is the championship for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) region. The championship gathers the most prestigious national teams in the region as well as invitees from other top-flight countries from outside the confederation. The championship is scheduled to run from July 12th through July 27th. In the past the championship has welcomed invitees such as five-time World Cup Champion Brazil, Colombia, South Korea, Ecuador and Perú. The CONCACAF member that wins the Gold Cup Championship commits to represent the confederation in other international competitions that include national teams from around the world, such as the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Copa America.
