How is Leon over anyone at this point? They lose anytime they play a big team in CONCACAF. They're like the (I hate using this analogy) PSG of CONCACAF.
Also because this isn't a strength-based ranking system - you earn the same amount of points for beating a minnow as you do for beating a top-five team. And since it's a two-legged-tie format, you can also earn a fair amount of points from winning one of the two matches even if you don't advance. Between being the #6 team last year and also having a good consecutive streak of appearances that all include at least one win, those points add up.

Qualifying four times in a row is pretty helpful. No other Mexican team has made more than 3 of the last 5 tournaments. Even if they drop duds in the tournament, they're still accumulating some points. It's pretty damning that they're as low as they are despite qualifying so often. The Mexican teams above them have qualified, over the last 5 years, 3 times, 2, 3, and 2.

Don't love that the club rankings include domestic play (it all gets sort of self-fulfilling when you start down that path), but it's miles better than the system they've had in place. Because the new CCL was going to reduce inter-country play outside of MLS - Liga MX so much, and because the UNCAF teams were going to start qualifying as a bloc rather than directly through their domestic leagues, I was planning on shutting my little coefficient system down at the end of this CCL. With Concacaf putting together a real ranking structure, that's cemented. I'll keep an eye on how the Concacaf rankings work out and will re-visit this thread in the future if their system gets a little too funky. In the meantime, I'll have my final rankings posted after the final next month. It's been fun!
