I hope Real Salt lake takes this though..... they are very strong, and may be one of the strongest MLS sides in the history of the league. Right up there with DC United of 1998.

I kind of like how libertadores does it, Best first place vs. worst second place, and so on down the line.

    So it would be:

    * Saprissa is the worst 2nd place, but they are in the same group as the best 1st place, so does Libertadores avoid teams in the same group play each other? I know concacaf does.

    A. Monterrey vs. Cruz Azul *
    B. RSL vs. Toluca
    ----------------------
    C. Santos vs. Saprissa *
    D. Olimpia vs. Columbus Crew

    Then the semifinal.
    A vs. B
    C vs. D

No they don't (avoid it). Neither does CONMEBOL have any hesitation about putting multiple teams from the same country on the same side of the bracket (including changing the brackets even at the semifinal stage) to avoid two teams from the same league in a final. Just ask Brazil.

That is, CONMEBOL would gladly and shamelessly toss all the Mexican teams on one side of the draw.

I like Saprissa over Olimpia or maybe even Salt Lake. We are at the stage where Saprissa know how to play. When their stadium is a sell out, they really take advantage of playing at home.

Against Santos they are toast though:D

So by Conmebol formula it would be:

    A. Monterrey vs. Saprissa
    B. RSL vs. Toluca
    ----------------------
    C. Santos vs. Cruz Azul
    D. Olimpia vs. Columbus Crew

    Then the semifinal.
    A vs. B
    C vs. D

But we know in concacaf Monterrey vs. Saprissa is against the rules. So this is not going to happen.

Mybe it is just a random draw, We should trust concacaf to do it legit. :)

I share his concern about the MLS teams being able to play good ball after a long layoff. On the other hand, I'm looking forward to dressing like an Eskimo at Rio Tinto when RSL hosts a team from Mexico or Central America in February. Let's see... 17F, snowing, 5,000 ft elevation....just brutal for the visitors.

I've said in another thread that group winners should get to choose their QF opponent, without country protection. 1st pick would go to the winner with most points, and so on.

I hope the CCL Final isn't anticlimactic because of the random draws.

That's definitely fair, because every group has the exact same level of quality, right?

Monterrey is on a roll, they have to be the favorites. I would love Monterrey at full strength to represent CONCACAF in the CWC. Unfortunately a lot of things will change within the team by December 2011.

It'd still be better than a random draw. A random draw allows for the possibility of an anticlimactical Final. Plus it would give teams an incentive to keep playing hard after they qualified for the QFs.
That's why we need to petition the CONCACAF to change the schedule to be more in line with Asia and Africa.

Planning the draw also allows for the possibility of an anticlimactic final. You can't assure stuff like that.

everything would be fine if only Pachuca werent so fricking lucky. Instead they are going to embarass Concacaf once again. Considering the Mexican league is better than any asian or african leagues, anything less than 3rd place is embarassing.

I would much rather have Cruz Azul in the CWC this december

The Korean League is Pretty good and also Japan, they get little respect because they are in Asia like Mexico in concacaf.

Also there are good teams in crappy Leagues, Egypt has a sucky league, but 2 pretty good teams. I do not know much about Tunisia.

Still internationally, the Mexican League has accomplished more than those two leagues combined

The J League is only 18 years young, it is a solid league with good payrolls.

Just going off the Club World Cup (which spans only one decade, admittedly), Korean and Japanese teams have gotten 3rd place more often than Mexican teams.
