Two giants - and "brothers" - of Mexican football take to the road when the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup kicks off Wednesday 5 March with a pair of first-leg matches.
Club América and CD Necaxa, both of which currently share Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, travel to El Salvador and Jamaica respectively to begin the 2003 edition of the confederation's club championship, first played in 1962.

F.A.S. hoping experience proves valuable against Club América

When CD F.A.S. take on Club América on Wednesday in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Salvadoran club is hoping they can build on the knowledge they've gained against the Mexican powerhouse to spring an upset.
As luck would have it, the two teams played to a 2:2 draw in a friendly in Laredo, Texas USA on 30 January - before the draw was held for the round-of-16 in the Champions Cup. In addition, through an agreement between the two clubs, the pairing was switched giving F.A.S. the home match in the first leg, with the return match moved to Dallas, Texas.

Arnett Gardens hoping to shrug off underdog tag against Necaxa

By their own admission Arnett Gardens FC have the role of underdog in their CONCACAF Champions Cup tie against Mexico's CD Necaxa. But the Jamaican club are promising a warm reception - and even hinting their could be a surprising result in the offing - when the teams play their round-of-16 first leg in Kingston on Wednesday.

    Familiar faces

Zarco Rodriguez, formerly of Los Burns, scored for FAS:

And MLS ref Kevin Terry officiated the Necaxa x Arnett game, apparently missing "un claro penal" that could have given the Jamaicans the advantage:

    http://espanol.sports.yahoo.com/030306/2/ho9f.html

Although it looks like the Mexican clubs still aren't really bothering to take this tournament seriously, it's not clear that they need to - Necaxa has an excellent chance of advancing and America could still have a decent shot if they play their starters in the return leg.

I find it particularly interesting that Club América picked up four bookings in the second half, after they were already down. I wonder if the Cobi Jones Tactic was involved here?

    Concacaf CC on Telemundo

This game is on Telemundo right now (Sat. 3/8, 4 pm ET).

I had no idea they would be showing it tape delay as I hadn't seen anything on SoccerTV and the Telemundo site just says "Sabado de Futbol."

Maybe we'll see a few more as the tourney progresses. I'm just glad to see someone, anyone, pick up these games, even on multi-day tape-delay.

Busy week ahead in Champions Cup as five round-of-16 series open

A busy week of CONCACAF Champions Cup action kicks off Wednesday with a pair of first-leg matches, followed by three more at the weekend, in the round-of-16 of the Confederation's club championship.
After two of the four Mexican representatives made their bows last week, the remaining two both open proceedings on Wednesday, as CA Monarcas Morelia travels to Guatemala to face CSD Comunicaciones, and CD Toluca plays host to Trinidad & Tobago's W Connection FC.

Then on Sunday, three U.S. teams make their debut in the competition this year, all playing away from home: Columbus Crew traveling to Colón, Panamá to take on Deportivo Árabe Unido; Los Angeles Galaxy visiting Tegucigalpa, Honduras where they will play CD Motagua; and San Jose Earthquakes facing CSD Municipal in Guatemala.

With the reconfirmation of the FIFA Club World Championship for 2005, this year's CONCACAF Champions Cup could take on added importance in terms of qualifying for that event, once the number of teams and format for the world championship is decided.

W Connection looking for way to stop Toluca's big red train

Desperately short of any real match practice, the W Connection FC defence will meet a stern test when they travel to Mexico this Wednesday for the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup round-of-16 tie against CD Toluca.

Toluca stage late comeback to record 3:2 victory

12.03.03 - Vicente Sanchez scored two goals to lead CD Toluca FC to a 3:2 victory, ending the dreams of W Connection FC of posting a famous victory in the teams' first-leg match in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday.
Sanchez hit for his goals as Toluca came back from a two-goal deficit with three goals in the final 25 minutes at Estadio Nemesio Diaz in Toluca, as the champions of the last short-season title in Mexico's Primera Division received a major scare from the Trinidad & Tobago club.

Toluca started few first-choice performers in the contest, and despite holding the majority of possession, the visitors created the better opportunities, mainly striking quickly on the break.

Rolando Viana gave W Connection a lead after just 18 minutes, beating Toluca goalkeeper Mario Albarrán with a shot from the right side. Kendall Davis then rounded Albarrán on the run to double the lead 20 minutes later for last year's T&T PFL runners-up, who are still weeks away from beginning their 2003 season.

But the Toluca powerhouse took advantage of the lack of match fitness over the final quarter of the match, Sanchez pegging back W Connection with a 65th-minute strike after claiming a poor clearance.

Edgar Garcia then pulled the home side level with a goal on 77 minutes with a shot from the left that beat WCFC 'keeper Alejandro Figueroa, Sanchez completing the comeback six minutes later by sending a rebound home with a right-footed blast.

Johnny Cubero's goal just before the hour mark was the difference as CSD Comunicaciones of Guatemala surprised another Mexican club in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Guatemalan club winning the first leg at home 1:0 against CA Monarcas Morelia.
Cubero was a thorn in the side of the Morelia defense all night long, and his header in the 59th minute gave Comunicaciones the slimmest advantage heading into the return leg in Mexico in 11 days.

Despite playing very few first-choice players, Morelia nearly got off to a dream start, Adolfo Bautista's effort after just four minutes coming back off the crossbar behind Edgar Estrada in the Comunicaciones goal. But the home side began to assert their dominance and created the better opportunities the remainder of the half.

It isn't the first, nor will it be the last, time that Terry has swallowed his whistle. That said, I always hope that he is the ref in any MLF v MLS matchup; it seems to cut down on all the diving from the Mexican sides.

It can't be in the best interest of this tournament for these match reports (from the confed's web site itself) to keep mentioning that the Mexican clubs aren't playing their First XI's. Unless they want to embarass the Mexies into taking it seriously by making them look arrogant, aloof, and just anti-concacaf (which most of them are :D).

Anyway, I can just see such a plan backfiring on Saucy Jack.

You may think of it as arrogant or anti-concacaf, but you dont understand the pressures the coaches face in the MFL. These pressures are not so much present in the other leagues in concacaf. The FMF is an entity that moves and generates over 750 million dollars. They say in the next 5-10 years, it will generate and move more than a billion dollars.

Already, 7 coaches have been fired and we are reaching the half season marker. Even the teams that are financially stable, are pressured to play more young players. Some coaches do and some dont. The ones that dont are scared of getting fired. This is something that I dont want but i know it is inevitable, but the MFL will become more like the Euro leagues where the fans and executives look more on results than on progress. There are cases where a coach builds a team from scracth and play a very attractive style of football.. but for various reasons.. the results dont favor them.

but its another means to expose our youth players to international experience. I dont see a problem with it.

with the reserve tournaments, the university tournament, the sub teams tournaments, are all means to give the younger players playing time so that they can be readu for the first team.

But what it comes down to... why should teams like Fas, Joe Public, Comunicaciones complain about us not sending our first team?

So CONCACAF should just lie and act like the Mexicans are sending starters instead of reserves?

    Anyone cares to add anything.

I think is wasn't a bad one and hopefully W Connection will get it right on the return leg game in Trinidad.

Imagine W Connection was leading 2-0 until the 70th minute. ( IMPRESSIVE )..........
