CONCACAF announces re-format for 2004 Champions Cup 8 teams - 2 MLS - 2 MFL - 3 Central American - 1 Caribbean Format: straight knockout (home and away)
Thanks. Btw, there is supposed to be a Fifa Club World Cup in 2005 - so I guess the winner of the 2004 CCC would qualify...
I see it runs March to May, so we're still *#*#*#*#*#ed on the schedual. Should be June to August but I suppose the Mexicans couldn't handle that.
This should help the MLS clubs with less fixtures to deal with during the middle of the week. Until there is some kind of TV deal then this Tournament will never take off like Champions League or Copa Libertadores.
yeah, this thing starts before our season does. maybe not june to august, but how about the very beginning of may to july. when is the mexican leagues season run?
Shame on us for not going on the international schedule. Remember, kids, it's not on ESPN, so it doesn't really happen.
Downsizing the competition and making entry more selective should help. I'd prefer to see it start a little later and get the first round and maybe second round in before the end of the Mexican season. Then finish it off once the Mexican season starts back up. but that's just me.
Concacaf changed the system so that teams outside of mexico have a chance to win. 4 MFL teams was too much since they beat everyone.
UEFA Champion gets 20 million to win it all, How much does the Libertadores winner get anyone ? and the CONCACAF winner, anything at all ? ..there should be some good TV deals, advertising money coming in to reward the teams, till then the clubs will have nothing to play for but some pride, if they have any. I would suggest CONCACAF and Libertadores to join forces and do some group play as is in UEFA, have a preliminary round with 2 groups in CONCACAF maybe to advance out to the second faze and challange S.American teams
check the Mexico forum for a thread named "looking for site with mfl info" btw to the person that asked i think the Copa Libertadores winner gets 1 or 2 mil not sure. Concacaf wont join forces with conmebol so we will have to wait til mls becomes bigger for it to be invited to play in copa libertadores.
by the way, what was the format for CONCACAF 2003 Championships? and how will the two MLS spots be determined? Supporters' Shield MLS CUP winner US Open Cup winner? If there is no repeat, which two of the three do you think should be choosen?
I would just as soon there be a playoff between the USOC winner and the Supporters' Shield winner, if one of the two is not the MLS Cup winner. One game, maybe an MLS preaseason one or something. Shouldn't be ludicrously difficult to arrange.
i agree with you , this game should be played one week before the start of the new MLS season each year and be like the opening game with half time show, parade maybe and soccer celebration, cool idea
16 Teams 4 from Mexico. 4 from USA. 6 From Central America. 2 From Caribe. The discussion between CONCACAF and the FMF about the Mexican participation to Copa Libertadores can also applied to solve this issue if CONCACAF doesn't use one of their famous double standards. The Final CONCACAF proposal to decide the entries of the Mexican teams to Copa Libertadores said that the two Superlideres (equivalent to Support Shield Winner) of each year would participate on Copa Libertadores, while the two Champions have to play the Champions Cup. They said that the Mexican Federation can't send a non champion team to Champions Cups.... since that Cup is just for Champions. If this also applies to the MLS, the two USA teams on CCC have to be the MLS Cup Winner and the Open Cup winner, the 2 USA Champions... since the Supporter Shield isn't an Official Champion (like in Mexico).
Should be MLS Cup winner and Open Cup winner. If a team does the double, then go to the regular season standings.
