I usually wear under armour recharge socks under my regular ref socks. Its time to replace them but under armour doesnt carry them anymore. Does anyone else wear compression socks and can recommend a different brand?

What is the benefit of compression socks exactly? I presume they work like compression shorts but for your calves?

I've never really understood it either.

Anybody willing to share some insight?

I weigh around 350 lbs. And my legs tend to swell later in the day and get really fatigued. The compression socks keep the circulation going and keeps the legs from tightening up. I do stretches between games, but I noticed a significant difference wearing them from not wearing them.

We had a brief discussion about this just last month. Here's what I posted:
    And @camconcay added this:
    I use these:

(Posted that way because the link kept magically changing into something else... what's up with that?)

I've started using them when hiking and fishing also.

I seem to be less sore and am able to recover quicker when using compression sleeves and socks. I use sleeves under my socks, unless it's cold, then I'll wear the full socks. I wear the full socks the day after to aid in recovery and when I'm working on my feet for extended periods of time. I have the both Vitalsox and Swiftwick Aspire Twelve Socks. I like the Swiftwicks better for running but the Vitalsox have held up better and seem to have more compression, and the Swiftwicks have begun to develop holes in the calve area after 9 months. I also have Thirty 48 Sleeves that I really like and are holding up well after a few months.

There are a lot of good brands out there. Go to a specialty running store and ask for advice. I have socks & pull-over sleeves, and use them in different situations.

My small pet peeve is buying something like this from Under Armour. I've personally never seen any good UA compression socks. There are many good, small companies out there who make these products well (and actually have to make them well or else they wouldn't be in business). I tend to be a gear aficionado - anything made by the big 4-5 companies in any industry looks great, but you can normally find an item that performs 10X better that is made by one of the "smaller" companies. Something like this - that's hidden and has no need for brand prestige - is something that you should feel free to shop around on before you end up back on your UA socks.

Thanks everybody who contributed to this thread.

You've actually got me thinking about giving them a try. When I finally do, I'll share my results and thoughts on them.

I wouldn't still be reffing without them.
I was getting horrible shin splints that made it impossible to run for long periods.
Tried compression socks, the pain went away, and has never come back.

I am looking at getting some for myself. Those one look pretty thick. I doesn't look like I have that much room in my shoes for those and my "ref" socks over. Would it work just as well to get compression sleeves instead of the full socks?

The Vitalsox are thin enough that I don't have any problem wearing them under regular socks in any of my shoes or boots.
