There's a Supplemental Draft on January 18 as well, another 3 rounds.

I thought they had gotten rid of the Supplemental Draft in recent years. Am I wrong about that? Is my memory escaping me?

They had when they cut the roster to 24 but I guess they are reinstating it because of the roster expansion.

so, they can announce a date and tv outlet for the draft, but not the time it starts?

that's one informative PR from the league, but it would nice if it had a start time listed.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espntv/espnGuide has it (Major League Soccer Draft) starting at noon (ET) on ESPN2 on Thursday, January 13 but not in HD (if that kind of thing is important to you).

What happens to any fourth round picks that were traded between two teams? Do the rights to fourth round picks become the rights to the first round of the supplemental draft?

They had, but the old CBA only allowed for a supplemental in years where there was a reserve league so it makes sense that it's coming back now.

What players will be taken in the supplemental draft? Is it just college seniors that werent selected in the superdraft?

I believe the draft willl just be from the same pool of college seniors as is available in the Superdraft.

Why they don't just have 6 rounds in the Superdraft, rather than having 3 in the Superdraft and 3 in the Supplemental, I have no idea. Maybe something to do with how much salary will be offered to the players by when they're picked, but that's a guess.

yes, yes it is, because i typed it there, not because I was quoting anything from the league.

not a huge deal, but just a bit disappointing from MLS HQ, as in the announcement on their website with very specific details (about the number of rounds, the tv coverage channel, and the time per rounds) that there wasn't even a mention of the start time of the tv coverage.

it's a small thing, but it does highlight how misguided or lacking MLS can be in terms of delivering a message or promoting their product. (again, not a huge deal, just a note on the incomplete press release/announcement from Simon Borg.)

Ageed. It totally slipped my mind until I saw an advertisement banner about it on this site. It's funny that FOX had a commercial for the FA Cup yesterday, but I've never seen a commercial for anything in MLS.

Ok thats what I thought. I also know they wanted a break between the two drafts so teams could reevaluate things and players. Thats why its not a six round draft. The teams wont have focused much on the last three rounds before the superdraft, so after they can see whos left and evaluate the remaining pool.

Other than John Rooney being signed by MLS, has anyone heard if these other international Combine players are officially signed by MLS or if they are merely trialing for MLS spots similar to tthe trio of Argentines - Sabbitani, Fernandez and Damaino - who participated in the 2008 Combine?

While most of the other internationals have actually played a few pro games {Estupinan, Marlon and Plata [with Ecuador's LDU Quito - have to wonder if MLS will partner with more clubs in the future to have some of their younger players participate in future Combines] and Cardozo [with Argentina's Quilmes]}, Rivas does not seem to have any pro experience other than trials with Philly and DC last season - seems odd that MLS would ink him to a contract unless these new reserve roster contracts allow players to be cut at any time and were not guaranteed through year-end (IIRC, similar to the old $12K and $18K developmental contracts of a few sesons ago which forced players like Troy Perkins to work in sporting goods stores to make ends meet).

Re: MLS SuperDraft trimmed to three rounds, first round to be broadcast on ESPN2

If they follow past precedent, MLS will publish a list of all draft-eligible players just prior to each draft so anyone drafted should be on the list so MLS has the players's basic info like age, position, college, etc. for its rpess release (i.e. - as opposed to being able to pick any college senior). For the last SuperDraft, the list was a big one (235 players - MLS teams provide all of the names of players who they might draft then MLS compiles the official list) even though only 64 players could be drafted. One of the MLS interns who prepared the list seemingly included a prank player (Pete Homeskillet - a forward from the University of Awesome) just to make things interesting. There will be a separate list for the Supplemental Draft including all of the undrafted players from the SuperDraft list as well as other players.

Was it really an intern? can't we blame (or congratulate) Garber for listing Homeskillet, since Garber's clearly responsible for everything MLS does.

who are these "other players" likely to be (on the Supplemental Draft list), and why weren't they available in the SuperDraft?

Do teams have to draft their GA players in the SuperDraft, or can they wait for the Supplemental draft to do that?

are John Rooney and Martin Rivas already under contract with the league? (link?)

I thought the vast majority of those players at the combine (basically in Florida on trial with the league) do not have any formal contract with the league in place (at this time), and only the GA players have been signed (prior to the draft). maybe I've got that wrong.

In the past, the other players added for Supplemental Drafts tended to be players from smaller schools but there were also lesser players from bigger programs also added to the mix.

I am not sure about your GA question - the GA players will almost assuredly be all selected in the 1st round. Teams do not need to draft their Home Grown players (i.e. DC just signed Ethan White to a HG contract - he does not have to be drafted at all).

Here is the link for the Rooney contract - I have read nothing about any of the other international players. In terms of college players, the Gen Adidas players are all signed as well as a few seniors (i.e. Farfan, Soares, McCarthy, Anibaba) who would be among the higher picks - all other Combine players have no MLS contracts as of now.

There are reports of other internationals as well, so the current list (if both Colombians are there) is:

    Argentina: Martin Rivas - M
    Colombia: Faider Burbano - M, Yessi Mena - F
    Ecuador: Joao Plata - F, Victor Estupinan - F, Marlon Ganchozo - M
    England: John Rooney - M
    Uruguay: Paulo Cardozo - M
