since we dont really have a thread that discuss the competition for places, i thought it would be nice to open one, i'll start it off by sayin' that giggsy is acknowledgin' that he isn't a deffinite starter for next year, and this could be nothin' but good for the team, as the players try to work harder to prove themselves.
here's a link to giggsy, link

I really hope that Park learns a great deal from Giggsy. He mastered his position, and could share his experience and knowledge with Park. From what I've seen, Park definitely has the ability to play the Giggs role.

In my opinion the competition is open for the following positions: CB with Rio (Silvestre or Brown), CM with Keane (Scholes, Fletcher, new signing) and LM (Giggs, Park or new formation).

Like the networks, let's project the winners.

At this time, we can project the following winners:

    Edwin Van der Saar
    Gary Neville
    Rio Ferdinand
    Gabriel Heinze
    Christiano Ronaldo
    Roy Keane
    Ruud Van Nistelrooy
    Wayne Rooney

The other races are too close to call.

I think Paul Scholes still walks into our team, he's SO good when in form, and we don't have anyone at all that can compare. Maybe Park eventually will. Remember the period last season when he couldn't buy a goal and we were in such bad form, then he scored (I think it was even that volley against Charlton) and things started looking up for him and consequently the team.

    As I see it...

ITALICS stand for possible/likley starter in another position
    UNDERLINE youth player/emergency only

    GK VDS, Howard, Foster
(the real competition will be for back up spot)

CBs Rio, Brown, Silvestre, O'Shea, Heinze
    (5 players for 2 spots)

RB Gary, Brown, O'Shea, Phil, Bardsley
(if Brown starts @ CB we've got 3 players pushing each other for that spot)

LB Heinze, O'Shea, Phil, Fortune, Richardson
[Fortune should be first on the list of backups but he's injured, which may see O'Shea given a chance to prove himself as Heinze's backup early on]
(4 players competing, but realisitcally once Healthy its Heinze's spot)

CM Keane, Scholes, Fletcher, Smith, Kleberson, Phil, O'Shea, Jones, Park
(9 players for either 2 or 3 spots, with active rotation in 2 spots, Keane/Fletcher likely)

LW Giggs, Park, Ronaldo, Rooney, Richardson, Fortune, Rossi
2 players who will actively push each other for the starting spot, Ronaldo and Rooney both there as a change of pace and then 3 just in case backups all in all very deep.
(4 players viaing for a starting spot) RG, JSP, QF, KR

    RW Ronaldo, Park, Rooney, Eagles {OGS, we have no clue}
worrying tbh... if Park does not work out then we will see lots of Ronaldo and Rooney on the right which will mean Giggs or Richardson will have to be consistent on the left.
    (2/3)

Forward Ruud, Rooney, Saha, Smith, Rossi, Bellion
either 1 or 2 spots and we've got it covered quite easily even if u look at it as ST and withdrawn striker we've got 3 for each.

At some point, United needs to begin chaning the midfield. Individually, most fans still support Keane, Scholes and Giggs. But is anybody ready to say that those three plus Ronaldo behind Rooney and Ruud is the lineup you want to see for the season? Time has come for a change and no one is going to tell Keane to sit down. So that leaves Giggs and Scholes.

From what I've seen, Park is better on the right, so in a few years Ronaldo can switch over to the left and Park to the right. Although they'd constantly switch it up during the game.
