I remember watching the 1982 semi-final against France. It certainly ranks among the most exciting matches I'd ever seen. I thought WGermany were dead after Giresse's goal. In the 1970 match with Italy, WGermany were dealt a terrible blow during the closing stages of regulation when Beckenbauer was deliberately hacked down as he ran into the penalty area, dislocating his arm in the process. Looking at film, I thought a penalty should've been called just for the foul alone, never mind whether the foul took place inside or outside the area. Since WGermany had used both their subs, Beckenbauer was forced to stay on, having to play with his arm wrapped against his body. We can only assume what would've happened had Kaiser Franz been able to play the extra-session in a healthy state. WGermany -v- Brazil in the 1970 final would've been an absolute classic.
2002 - South Korea - Italy (second round) Greatest and most exciting comeback in World Cup history. It's an official World Cup classic game chosen by FIFA that will go under its archives when the 2006 WC in Germany begins. The game had breathtaking back and forths from both teams having clear-cut chances that were missed, high drama, and high tensions between the two sides. It was just simply the most exciting match of that tournament. No other game was a thriller as that match was.
you are absolut right.....for gerd müller it was his best worldcuptournament, better than in germany..the whole athmosphäre,the greatest fans,he had much sucess with goals, but the italy game loss was his biggest nightmare in his career , but still a classicer.... iam still pissed i never have seen this german team and this brasilian team in this final 1970...... pitt
That is exactly right. After Argentina went up 2-0, Franz Beckembauer realize it was time for extreme tactics. He brought in Honens and sent everybody up. It was a suicidal formation and they were either going to get killed or come back. It worked for Germany, as they got two goals from two corner kicks to tie it 2-2. The mistake that Germany made was that after the second goal they should have calmed down and gone back to defending, and to guarding Maradona. But they sensed the momentum on thier side and wanted to go for the kill, so they stayed with the suicidal formation. This made it easier for Argentina to get the third goal, when Maradona found Burruchaga all alone in position to score.
The South Korea-Italy match might have been the best match for pure drama and atmosphere at the '02 Cup. But the best comeback would have to be the Senegal-Uruguay match from the final day of group play. Senegal only needed a draw to go through and they jumped out 3-0 and at half-time, it looked all over. But Uruguay fought back in the second half with goals from Morales, a stunning volley from Forlan, and a penalty towards the end from Recoba. It was a great comeback to get a result but they needed a win to go through, and they even had a great chance in stoppage time, but Morales missed a point blank header right at the whistle, and Senegal survived, 3-3, and went through. I watched the whole thing live and it was really one of the more exciting offensive-geared matches I have ever seen.
DEUTSCHLAND DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES, UBER ALLES IN DER WELT! I think Germany is the greatest nation to play the sport because of their ability to come back and their never say die attitude. It sucks that all that seems to have faded away recently. Let's hope they can come back in 2006!
hey if we're talking about oldies here it goes... the 1966 WC quarter final match between North Korea and Portugal 30m into the game North Korea was up 3-0... from then on Eusebio led Portugal to an amazing comeback winning 5-3 with 4 goals by the "Black Panther" himself. Legendary stuff
Don't flatter yourself. Gordon Banks was out for England and replacement Peter Bonetti had an absolute NIGHTMARE gifting goals to Germany. The best England teams were between 1920-1939 and '66 of course.
the english team from 1966 and 1970 i think was relativ equal strong i think..you are absolut right without banks the english team was handicapped...bonnetti had one big mistake the first goal..i dont think bonetti is really blame for the second goal too..the backheader from seeler was unique and had surprised everbody inclusive bonnetti..how many backheaders like this you ever have seen???ramsey has made mistake too and has taken out charlton..but all in all team england wasted a 2:0 lead and lost 3:2... pitt
It is fairly widely accepted in England that the best ever team was the 1970 side, the teams in the preWW2 era were more dominant but that was due to a dirth in quality opposition. The 1966 team was not as good as 70 they just had the advantage of playing at home, with a full strength team and not in the blazing heat at altitude.
Yes but lets not forget the problems the England team were subjected to in attempts to destabilise them such as the arrest of captain Bobby Moore on shoplifting charges. Charlton was missing, Banks was missing which IMO makes English teams of '66 stronger than the one that played that day in '70. Despite this it was still a great comeback by Germany. Who proved that you need to be at your strongest to beat them. My argument was more that this was not the greatest England team. Players of the calibre of Finney, Matthews, Wright, Greaves etc. would have graced any era IMO.

By that theory, the folks at FIFA who selected the Korea - Italy match as the official classic game of that tourney must be all Korean then. To the dude who said South Korea wouldn't repeat that feat in nuetral territory... No objections there, chief. With the current state of our national team, we'd be lucky to come away with a single win in the next WC.
Everyone thought so before WC 2002 as well. The fact is that the days of underestimating teams like Korea and Japan are over. One may add US to the list too. These teams are not amongst the best, but on their day can surprise anyone.
