While everyone wants first team minutes, an up and coming USA keeper backing up Friedel in the Prem isn't a horrible situation in terms of learning how to be a top level keeper. From Villa's standpoint it is ideal, one of the top keepers in the Prem (if not the best) and a talented back up that can provide great cover when needed and has long term benefit.

Was Tim Howard made an immediate starter once he showed up at Man Utd?

Yes; I'm pretty sure he displaced Barthez right away.

He was, but that wasn't the original intent of Man United. Their plan was for Timmy to back up Barthez. Timmy simply went out and won the job at the start of the season.

In fairness to Tony, he wasn't the only US GK to sport a nice mullet.

Wow, in the picture on the right Kasey looks like he's got a little Captain in him.

It looks like Scott Carson isn't going to Villa, but instead to Stoke City

I guess Villa simply rated Guzan more highly, as the price difference wasn't too great. Carson did play in Euro qualifier for England and made a big error. Still, I think he's pretty good.

Is Guzan going to get his work permit? I'm hearing that's kinda iffy.

It's not iffy. I put it at 95%. Aston Villa wouldn't have tried to sign him a second time without knowing they had a very good chance to get the work permit. Guzan playing in our recent world cup qualifiers really helped him out in that regard.

From what I've read online, I think Villa fans think Carson is a bit of a donkey.

Why spend $3M just to upgrade your backup keeper for a few months?

    O'Neill steps up search

"Aston Villa have so far this summer brought in only Steve Sidwell from Chelsea, but are actively pursuing deals to bulk up what is the smallest squad in the Premier League.

American goalkeeper Brad Guzan will arrive in the Midlands just as soon as he is granted a work permit and O'Neill is keen to firm up initial enquires for a number of players in the next few weeks."

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

The difference was £2 million for Guzan vs £10 million for Carson so there was a big price difference (Villa had a £10 million option on Carson which Liverpool refused to lower).

But now it looks like Carson is going to Stoke City for £3.5 million (accoring to that link).

You can never really be sure how much to trust transfer sums that are in the press, but I can assure you Stoke City won't be paying £8-10 million for him.

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

More like Barthez lost it ... by being Barthez.

Brad went for $1.5M, according to Galarcep.

$4M was the price last January when he had a year to go on his contract.

So, $1.5M extra to have a reasonable back-up isn't the worst deal ever.

The problem is that Big Brad #1 isn't going to give up his slot. He may be 37 but he ain't ready to be put to stud yet. El Guzano will likely see only the Cup matches.

Few months? Villa surely signed Guzan to a long-term contract.

And btw, what's with the David Duke quote?

    1. But I'm pretty sure Guzan would be available without a transfer fee Jan. 1.
    2. I think it's funny.

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

His MLS contract would have been up Jan 1. When a player is transferred, he negotiates a new contract with his new team (unlike a player being traded in American sports, where his current contract is still in effect). Essentially, in a transfer a club gives a player money to buy out his contract, thus buying the right to sign the player to a new deal.

The point is, Villa could have signed him for free then instead of paying a multimillion dollar fee now. The difference is the six months they would have him with the team between now and then.

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

The difference is six months on Villa's roster, and a guarantee of his services for the term of the new contract. After his contract with MLS/Chivas was completed in January, he would have been free to sign with any team.

I guess Villa didn't want to take the chance that he would sign with another team. Pretty much the same situation as Adu and Benfica, except that Guzan is a more proven player, and therefore worth a bit more.
