From the United Soccer League's site: http://www.uslsoccer.com/schedules/columbusw.htm The official announcement hasn't been made. I see that about half their games will be at Crew Stadium. Anyone know who the owners are, or anything about the team?
well I know that if they're playing at CCS that we'll be putting more money into our pockets. I'm glad they're finding more uses for the stadium that are soccer related and bringing in revenue.
You could always call and ask for details... here's the contact info 1630 Schrock Road Columbus, OH 43229 P: (614) 882-6738 F: (614) 882-2491 E: jmjmilano@msn.com Question 1. What is the name of the team?
Another thought that just popped into my mind. Will we be able to get these team to be a reserve squad in the future? Lamar should really look into buying them up in that case. That would be sweet!
Probably not. Looks like Cincinnati is getting a franchise, and I think Heather Mitts is from there. Hey, you gotta have hope though!
D'oh! I just checked the USL site a bit better... and I'm going to have to agree that this is a womens league. Well now I'm disappointed. I was so hoping this would be a move towards a reserve squad and better our player pool. Well... good luck to the Columbus Crewzers, or whatever their name is going to be.
especially since Heather is in WUSA, I don't think she'll go down a league, since she has had national team callups.
I'm actually being serious about this (surprising, I know). Do you think MLS and Lamar Hunt would want to work with this potential W-League team and name them Crew and outfit them in the same uniforms as "our" Crew? Would there be any benefit to doing that or has my second Diet Coke of the day sent me over the edge?
I'm sorry, kaiser kraut, I'll have to investigate if she'll go down for myself. You understand, I'm sure.
I'm not sure this is in any body's best interests. First of all, there WAS a W League team in CBus as recently as 1998. Made such an impact that I'll bet not one person can name them. (Hint: they played at Soccer First in Dublin) Secondly, W League is minor league. WUSA is first Division. This is not even analagous to A League. More like D3. Even PDL. To be even more blunt, it just isn't that good. Third, to be brutal about it, W League is a loser. Ain't NOBODY doing anything but pour money into this dog. And if Mr Hunt wants to lose money on a soccer venture, I'd rather he lost it on a PDL side or even a Y league team. W League is just crap. (The beer of your choice to anyone who can name Columbus' erstwhile W league team)
I'm still trying to figure out if this really is a women's league: From the Northern Virginia Majestics Website: Or even this one from the Jacksonville Jade:
Has anyone actually watched a W-League game? It's of really spotty quality. The quality of the matches that I have seen ranges from poor to brutal. I don't say this as a disrespect to the women's game either. It's just that the players are a combination of U-19s, college players home for the summer and WUSA pretenders. At one game I saw, the home team couldn't field a complete side because half their team was at a club tournament with their youth team. Imagine the A-League, D3, PDL, and the Y-League rolled into one, and you have the W-League. And no, you can't have Heather Mitts!
I thought the Columbus women's team was the Xiggz or something as equally lame. I didn't think it would really be a good idea to bring them into the fold, especially since MLS and WUSA didn't exactly start hand-in-hand. I'm just thinking of ways to spread the word.
W-League would be the equivalent of the PDL with a couple "star" players thrown in (usually second class foreign internationals). The balance of the teams, a la PDL, are benerally college kids trying to ramp up their game during the summer. Last week the USL website mentioned a "coming announcement about a new Columbus W-League team." Well the schedule came out, and they still haven't had the announcement. That's probably why they don't seem to have a nickname yet. I crosschecked the schedules. No doubleheaders for you guys, but their home matches are all at CCS, so hopefully that'll 1) be more rent money - and 2) be soccer (instead of something more brutal) being played on the pitch.
Gotta give it to FF on spelling. It was of course PRONOUNCED Ziggs but it was spelled Xiggz. Whaddaya drinkin there, Sailor?
I called them up to see what was up and I'm bored out my mind as well. I asked what their name was going to be and he said that they were going to announce it at a press conference two weeks from now, maybe 1/26 or 1/28, and ticket prices. They are looking for players, so any young ladies out there looking for a part time job as a soccer player give them a call; Bill, Andy, Zak.
