Columbus Crew Grouchy™ Point Cup 2024
    [IMG]

WELCOME BACK, MY FRIENDS, TO THE SHOW THAT NEVER ENDS!

No, we’re not spinning an ELP masterpiece. It’s (already) time for another obnoxious exhilarating season of the Grouchy™ Point Cup!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME?
Uh, great… because we’re doing this thing. All are encouraged to join the fun(?), and it plays real easy. Feel free to skim the COMPLETE RULES & REGULATIONS if you’re new or forgetful or really bored at work.

LONG STORY, SHORTERED – Simply predict the result in the pre-match poll of each(ish) Crew match (and, occasionally, other random soccer matches).* Good guess; point(s) get!

    A NOTE(S)
I am an old, tired manchild. Please do me a favor and vote BEFORE the pre-match poll closes (usually an hour or so before kickoff). Miss the vote? Please message me or post your guess in the match thread BEFORE kickoff. If I like you I’m feeling generous and you feed me beer, I’ll make a note and possibly remember to award you any points you may earn (yeah right, loser).

Standings will be tracked here (eventually, gimme a minute, dammit). I'll strive to post the results in this thread in a timely manner. I'll fail. Often. ... GET OFF MY BACK, DAD!

Last thing, please vote on the poll in this thread.** It will be used as the tiebreaker if necessary at the conclusion of the season. I’ve given you up through March 5 to make your choice, but don’t dawdle.

    LET’S GET IT ON, WEIRDOS
Allow these simple truths to guide you this season… @Grouchy is love… @Grouchy is life… lose by 2 or more… and @TKyle is a stupidface!

And, as Grandmammy chr1st always used to say, watch your back!

That’s it. Play ball or something. Wheee. I’m having fun.

*SUPER SPECIAL @TRUJDUB21 SECTION: If I’m too slow making a match thread or you’re eager to post about an upcoming game, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CREATE MATCH THREADS. You have this power. Do not be afraid to use it! PLEASE. All I ask is that you include a poll with the usual choices (i.e. Win by 2 or more, Win by 1, Draw, Lose by 1, and Lose by 2 or more) and tick the box to display the votes publicly.

**Only "major" trophies/awards (i.e. THE LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP, Supporters' Shield, MLS Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, Leagues Cup, and Campeones Cup) will be counted.

I'll be the negative Nancy early on... not many.

Having success in MLS is one thing. SUSTAINING success there is quite another, as we've seen historically. The extra matches, the lack of depth -- it's just a tough nut to crack.

I voted for 1, because we have that dumbass Campeones Cup which only requires one win.

    Good pick.

We're not winning anything in CONCACAF/FIFA.

We're probably not winning the USOC. Hot take: Part of the reason we won it in 2002 was due to a very tired LA team. I'd love for us to win it this year, but let's be real.

    The Shield? Lulz.

I'd love for us to repeat MLS Cup, but yeah, we've seen how much that happens.

I thought it was announced that MLS clubs will not compete in USOC in 2024?

Still up in the air. USSF had back channel discussions about it at the general meeting last week. Think it might be on the MLSPA and MLS to come to a service time agreement for MLSNP players. But with that, depending on the nature of the CBA if it was ever finalized, the MLSPA could and can bargain about other topics.

Which would seem to make it even less likely that we'd win it.

This is more current than the news from December which made it seem they were back in.
    https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/39154089/us-soccer-rules-mls-teams-participate-24-open-cup

Either way, it's not something we're gonna win.

The CBA was finalized, approved by the players and runs through 2027.

Thanks for continuing this tradition of "oh shit, did I vote for this match?". I'm sure we will bump into each other at the LDC this season and your next beer at that moment is on me. Cheers!

As always, I question the veracity of tweeted news items.

However, if there’s any truth to the “up to 60 players” line, it’s absolute bullshit.

First, why in God’s name would MLS legitimately need an extra 30 effing roster spots to compete in the USOC? They don’t, obviously. As it is, many games feature MLS first team players who don’t tend to play much in MLS reg season games. So logging some minutes in USOC matches is a big plus for them, since at least it gives them some playing time.

How many more guys would any MLS team need, hell even arguably use, in this tournament, 5? 10?

And who the hell would these extra 30 players be? Well, their NP rosters, of course, of which no more than 24 can be on pro contracts.

Honestly, I don’t have a great love affair with the USOC, but it’s all we have and, to its credit it’s been around a long time. But MLS’s whiny ass attitude about playing in it is just dumb. It’s a minor inconvenience for nearly all MLS clubs, all of whom are free to field reserve sides if they so desire.
