There are some good players who are not re-signed, but things needed to change. Just ironic that it is only the roster the RFO is ready to make changes to: “We have had to make some very difficult decisions over our roster but that is all part of the process of change,” said Paul Bravo

I know nothing about all the roster rules and complications, but, I'm surprised to see Figueroa is out of the picture. He seemed to be a great pick up for us.

This one makes the least sense to me too.

Daniel Boniface reporting the 12 cuts amount to $1.9 million in 2015 salary. If one wanted to speculate, this could be seen as the Rapids trying to create room for Vela's reported salary demands. Let's just hope this doesn't blow up in the FO's face - we fail to land Vela and lose a few decent players by exposing them to free agency.

But there is nothing to create, you must spend the cap or miss out, league office gets the money regardless of if you spend it or not. So its just deciding how much over the cap you want to spend (Transfer fee included).

Yeah, but phrasing it that way is much less pithy.

You know the old saying, 'when you can't fire the entire team you fire the coach?' Rapids front office be like, "nope, we're firing the entire team!"

Given the rumors of past offseason, it seems a lot of times the options can be quite pricey.

I have no idea what they're plan is, but a sane team in this position could pass on Figueroa because he's probably expensive and an older player, and they need a lot of help so there be other positions to spend the money on first.

This makes more sense than that early rumor that there wouldn't be much turnover. A crappy team can't be building around a bunch of 30 yr olds.

So writing up this news for my blog I realized we cut 11 players (not counting Moor or St. Ledger but including MacMath) and you could play an almost perfect 4-4-2 with the players we cut. It wouldn't be a very good team but you could have every position filled with somebody who at least plays in that position some of the time.

    MacMath
    Riley - Burling - Figueroa - Harrington
    Sanchez - LaBrocca - Pittinari - Alvarez
    Torres - Eloundou

    Hmmmm.

The Rapids allowed their Defender of the Year to go out of contract. The Rapids declined options on "one of the most experienced players in MLS," a player who "was instrumental in much that was good," and another player who "had his best season for the Rapids."

Translation: Despite the endless parade of postseason PR, the truth is that the 2015 Rapids were a very, very bad team. I do not lament any of the cuts. I remain puzzled by some of the players the Rapids chose to keep (Watts? Badji?). And I fail to see any reason for keeping the RFO brain trust that created the 2014 and 2015 disasters.

So much for "just 5-6" roster moves this offseason...

This seems the most likely explanation, coupled with "well, if we don't get Vela, at least we saved Stan lots of money".

Also, a side of overreaction to commentators complaining about how old the Rapids had gotten. 6 of the 10 players are over 30.

None of the cuts surprise me. Not extending another offer to Sanchez, Burling or Figueroa kinda surprises me.

Figueroa's option was declined. I bet it had a large salary escalation in it and Maynor made it clear that he'd want more money that they wanted to give even if they made a new offer.

Also, let's step into the shoes of Moor and St. Ledger for a moment: you just got cut from a team that went 9-15-10, worst in the West, because the FO wants to save a few dollars. Even if they signed Vela with those dollars, why would you want to take less money to potentially put up with another season like the last two?

And if you're the RFO: you have to see that you have no leverage with either of those two. Both were solid starters last year and other teams could definitely use them. Why not just hold onto them and try to trade them for allocation cash, instead of letting them go free? Unless there's some byzantine rule I'm missing, Moor can just decline our offer and go as a free agent, given he is 31 and has been in the league for more than 8 years.

    I certainly understand that, but...

That was curious, but I still get tripped by up MLS roster rules. Was the wording intentional, as in, if they didn't mention an offer, they are not interested in bringing the player back? If they declined options for the players eligible for the re-entry draft, can they even make a new offer before Stage 1 of the draft? I guess in past years there was mention that the team was still interested in the player if they go unclaimed in the draft. But that probably wasn't in the press release.

Also, why the mention of the offers to Moor and St. Ledger...is that a CYA thing if they sign elsewhere? (Hey, we tried to re-sign them...) Or part of the free agency process? (Do they retain their MLS rights if they sign outside the league etc.)

Sooooo, when is this mythical "Offensive Coaching Assistant" arriving?
Seems Paul Bravo and Pablo would like to get his input on some of these cuts.
Or is he not due to arrive until like, July 2016 in typical RFO fashion, and have no say in the creation of team he is to take professional responsibility for?

My barber's sister's neighbor's friend said they heard the FO are in super serious negotiations with Jurgen Klopp and they want to bring him in as soon as he is done with righting the Liverpool boat. I'm just a little skeptical though because they were supposedly splitting their off season time between those negotiations and working on the Vela deal and making sure they had either Ibrahimovic, CR7, or Neymar as 'safety' signings in case Vela hesitates to jump on board our super-one-club.
