I might be foolish. But I still have hope for him. He definitely has a spot if he decides to become a football player again. His issue is mental. The next year will be key for his career. Failing at Galatasaray will be the last straw.

We relied too much on James and JFQ.

Diaz was shut down and James was cooked. Once those guys were out of the picture we were out of ideas

James had a HORRID world cup just like we all expected.
He had a decent game against Portugal but the rest was pure non sense to have him on the field due to pressure im assuming.

I've said it before. The issue is not playing with a 10. The issue is the kind of 10. Colombia would definitely benefit from a more modern attacking midfielder that can help in pressing. And we have some players coming up that have been good at that. I can see Puerta and Jhon Arias making that role theirs in the next 6 months.

I hated seeing James in the right wing. I will always respect everything he's given in the last 16 years for our country. But he cannot keep playing for the SNT. It's like the Cristiano situation for Portugal, you cannot keep a guy in the field just for aura. Just because he's a legend. He'll always be cherished. But he needs to step aside.

Same with Vargas for most of the tournament. But we do need to hope our young keepers develop.

It's true he was bad in every game, the funny thing is he started running more the worse he was playing offensively, he actually seemed to be willing to work this game but sadly he's not fully fit and in form. We had the game and situations to platform him but he just couldn't do it anymore which isn't suprising, if he would have been dedicated and in a club and working on his game could have done well but he is who he is.

It sounded after the game like Juanfer is going to retire from the NT. James is all but retired given he is now technically unemployed too.

Colombia needs a 10 on the field, and I agree with BAAL that the answer is simply asking for more from our 10s than not playing with one. Odegaard and Tielemans are showing in this tournament that the position has evolved more than died.

Arias can do it for the time being (and I think can work well in a double 10 with Puerta - as they ended up doing this tournament often) - but it makes you really hope that between Rengifo, Samu Martinez, Monsalve and Yaser someone emerges soon that can play this role.

I think the idea of having a 10 needs to go. Or if its a talented player like Puerta that has to put in the defensive work because that is the type of futbol that is being played rn. in that case that position has evolved and its not just simply making deep passes, those players need to be fit and more dynamic.

That's the point. There are high performing 10s all over this WC, their coaches just expect them to also defend and press, and we should too. Arias does it in Brasil and Puerta did it all tournament.

Emery plays with 3 10s in his system at Villa.

We can evolve while keeping the role in system too.

    It’s been rough man

Colombia over 3 world cups 14 games

    9 wins
    2 losses
    3 ties

eliminated twice in a row in pks

add to that the Copa ran where we lost in the final in extra time

we are missing something but Colombia doesn’t really lose in tournaments, but can’t get over the hump

I don't really consider guys like Odegaard and Tielemans as 10s they are 8's imo, they both defend and Tielemans plays in a double pivot deeper and Odegaard plays in a 3, they both defend. When I say we don't need 10's I mean guys like James and Quintero who don't defend and are basically only valuable on the ball, no off ball runs no real defending etc. Puerta too plays double pivot so I don't consider him a 10, he defends like mad which is great, the more skill the better!
