You are not wrong. FIFA calendar is weird and extremely Eurocentric.

Men's international breaks

• September 1–9: World Cup qualifying and friendly matches.
• October 6–14: World Cup qualifying and friendly matches.
• November 10–18: World Cup qualifying and friendly matches.

If it was up to me, I would try to have 3 2 week/20 day breaks, instead of 6 or 8 10 day breaks. Also, since I'm thinking out loud, I would have only expanded the WC to 40 teams (8 groups of 5), but with 32 direct berths and 16 teams playing a 1 or 2 game playoff to become teams 33 to 40.

 

I like the playoff concept being expanded so that it’s essentially a pre-world cup and the teams that are in the World Cup are the elite teams only.
