You guys have a short memory. Homie is right on this one. Sure, let's cherry pick Mier's crappy Vzla match (BTW we won 3-6) and some of his weaker IQ moments. But are we really going to rely on a 37 year old ready for the WC as our only option and havent see Vargas also fail? Are we going to forget all the blooper Ospina moments in WCQ where his position was never challenged? Or do you guys forget one of Cordoba's biggest bloopers as a NT GK (Bogoba 2003' vs Arg). Those 2 points would have sent us to a repechaje.

All to say is that he's a talent GK, one of our best. So is Montero. So bring them BOTH + Vargas. I think Lorenzo will keep him. I would rather see Ospina out and Mier + Montero in,

I was re-watching an old highlight. Colombia vs Poland. Ospina died about 6 times in that game. They kept showing them. I know some of you have brought this up in the past. If JuanFer can become a regetonero, then Ospina is on his way to Hollywood, lol..

We know what we'll get from Vargas. Mier is talented but heavily flawed obviously.

Mier has always had these issues. He does the same thing in Mexico. Hes a good gk aside from that, but parrying shots directly at your opponent will cost you, and you cant have that liability in a WC tournament.

Mier has made around 10 mistakes of this kind during this year with Cruz Azul. This is not cherry-picking the last match — it’s a clear pattern of his level, and it actually also happened when he played in Colombia.

The real exceptions were his two good seasons in Mexico, but overall, Mier has been a calamity throughout his career.

He even conceded five goals at home against an MLS team. These are just a sample of six major mistakes that have directly led to his team’s elimination this year. . If a goalkeeper commits so many bloopers in just five months, it’s fair to question his reliability. And even more so if we are talking about whether he is a proper choice for the national team, especially considering that in just three starts he has already conceded two goals due to bloopers and other bad mistakes, including a costly one against Argentina.

    enjoy:

I know. I was never a fan of Mier from his youth days and at Nacional.
He has improved though and he can get better.
For the Senior team he has started three games and looked bad in one. That is not enough for me to give up on him.
I can understand people who say he should not play in the World Cup. Sure.
But not be called up again? That to me is pure nonsense.

Can give him a shot maybe one day post world cup, assuming he grows up.

But if this is how he is, then im good with what we had.

    Not worth risking it all

I don't think this is accurate, I think Ederson wanted to leave but I think Pep is evolving his teams approach because they don't have the squad to play the high pressing high possession system he usually plays and also Haaland does a lot better with space to run into. It was a head scratcher when they bought Donnarumma, its not because of Ederson watching them play Man United at home they sat back and defended and countered and they didn't press high and were much more willing to drop deep and generate space, for that you primarily need more of a shot stopper and less a goalie good with his feet which is why the switch. Pep always changes to stay ahead of the trends and exploit what teams are doing to stay contrarian, if he had the squad to play his traditional philosophy I think he would, but its clear he doesn't they aren't good enough to dominate on the ball like days past.

Exactly, time to move on from the ball playing goalkeeper.

Even pep sees it and this is his philosophy, pep wants to win and is willing to put this behind him and change.

Sometimes you have to go back to the basics instead of trying to force something.

Its important to play to your strengths

And this is why we should be playing Mier earlier, and other new talents, you gotta get them comfortable and work out the nerves to get them to a position where they can perform, and players need to be given a real chance rather than thrust into the highest pressure situations to start out of desperation. Mier had one bad save that he pushed into the wrong area, Ospina did that shit for years and just because this was early days and the striker punished him doesn't mean we should over do it, we should be looking at this club form, if he's got clear flaws that show up there fine he may not be ready.

My opinion is we don't have a lot to lose, I don't want us to play safe and scared in this World Cup and we have largely a year to try some new things and we have to evolve and find some things to do differently. I'd love us to move back to the really high press we were using, and Mier as a sweeper keeper helps with that alot, also Duran and James are not ideal for that style, but we should try going with full pressing team that plays arias in the James spot and a real 4-3-3 returning to our all out high pressure.

But we were good when we high pressed and bad when we stopped. its almost a 1:1 decline largely brought on by trying to play Duran and James post Copa America and we haven't really gone back.

You don’t fix these issues at the national team where we play maybe 6 games a year with months in between

if Mier hasn’t figured out those issues at his club, we aren’t going to fix those

You don't no but players do well when comfortable and are less mistake prone, there's a level of pressure and expectation on the national team and there isn't a lot of time in camps or training to get comfortable which is why getting it out of the way early and getting them to a point they can perform is a necessity. I hate the way Lorenzo manages this, only going to these guys when he's forced or desperate and they are less likely to perform, he doesnt' think ahead and bring them along gradually starting out in lighter situations. Venezuela wasn't high pressure, but for a goalie one poor deflection isn't really a big deal and we shouldn't over react to it.

But again, it’s not like he’s having those issues at the NT only and is therefore something we are doing wrong or not doing right to help them

he has those same issues in Mexico. It’s just who he is and we are not going to fix it in 3 day concentration trainings

Muñoz is a better example of what you are saying. He plays significantly better for his club so we have to figure out how to get that out of him at the NT.

but fixing Mier’s mistakes is like asking Lorenzo to fix Duran’s behavior. Dude is just a shit head and that’s not something we can fix in short periods if he himself and his club can’t figure it out over an entire season

Yeah we shouldn't fix the club mistakes, if he's playing poorly at club and making big errors he's not ready of course. But Mier has crazy potential and do not have a clear better option and Vargas will be 37 come the World Cup means Mier should still be given a lot of chances and his club form needs to be monitored closely by Lorenzo.

after next WC he pretty much the only gk unless we give the U20 and the Dept Cali guys a shot.

Montero/Devis both made bad career choices this summer. Devis starting in 2nd division Italy probably would have been called up. Is he 2nd or 3rd choice at Roma?

Unless Vargas is injured or his level drops drastically, the position is his until 2026. Devis and Montero should be in the shortlist and I guess Ospina has tons of experience to contribute. I think Mier has potential and while I'm not crazy about him right now, I understand why he has been in the team and why he was (is?) ahead of the other 3 options.

in comes a new challenger .... 22 6'4 (former U20 NT player) and started his first game in Portugal. NT coach only looks at guys abroad that is why Montero left Millos. Just crazy to never even look at a U23 player with 100 games as a starter at GK. then magically call them up because you discovered them once in europe....

Montero will most likely return to Colombia in a few months then start again. So he has a chance to make the final roster. Devis think will be tough to convince Roma to loan him since he is cheap and a decent back up.
