Considering how many times we're on espn2, I'm surprised they could find 7 free games to fit into their schedule.

I guess I'm due for a new DirecTV receiver. If the HD receiver has a built-in RJ-45 DHCP internet jack, I can get rid of my home phone and save more than enough money to pay for the new receiver.

How does HDnet coorelate to DirecTV Shootout Package? Or does it?

    it doesn't at all

you can have a shoot-out game covered by hdnet as well, you can have a fsw game covered by hdnet or an otherwise uncarried game covered by hdnet

they've got a couple of trucks they send around to cover sports and what not for the channel... i have no idea how many years they will cover mls, but at least this one

Ok, then the better question is: Is HDNet part of the DirecTV package? I have direct TV, but I've got no clue if I have this channel. Is it channel 199? What package to you have to buy to get HDNet?

The only place in the KC metro area to have HDNET is Hooters on Metcalf.

In St. Louis there are a bunch. As well as O'Fallon MO

Speak for yourself. I count 17 of 30 games that are not on espn2, FSW, or main RSNs. I can only count on getting 13 games via the shootout. That sucketh the great suck. Last year, DirecTV did pick up the KCAL and MetroSports games, but there is go guarantee that they'll do it this year. Even if those games, plus the terrestrial broadcasts from Dallas and New England are picked up, that still leaves 10 of 30 games that either have no broadcast, or are only available on HDnet. You wanna float me a couple grand so I can upgrade to HD TV and satellite gear?

No doubt. I'm here in KC (as opposed to A. Mead's removed location) and I don't completely like it either. Every road game should be on TV in KC, every game televised or taped by any means should be on SHOOTOUT and repeated later to time stagger all games, the highlight show should be on ESPN2, FSW should be on COMCRAP, and apparently now I need to get to work to join the growing ranks of HD capable.

Now that I'm done ranting - back to reality: To put it in perspective, MLS has a better TV package for the money (especially, if you get FSW) than any other league in the US. Think about it, we in KC have never had the whole road slate televised. Now, we just have to go to Hooters a few times. Still, for $49 you get something like 80% of the games. Because of the time stagger you can watch 80% of the SO package. In every other sport, you have a much higher expense for the PPV plan, a much higher percentage of games you must miss due to overlapping broadcasts (which will be an increasing problem when MLS is >10 teams), and for MLS a comparable percentage of games televised on basic cable outlets. MLS on HDTV is another feather. I believe it's somewhat similar to early programs on ESPN in that as soon as the mega-properties of sports become available to the Cube, MLS might go the way of Aussie Rules on ESPN. For now HDTV needs programming 24/7. - good for us. Did I mention Hooters' food sucks?

They serve food at Hooters? ;)

I ordered my Shootout Package last night. They know so little about it at DirecTV that they still have no clue on a schedule. Not to mention the fact that the channels dont become available until 5 minutes before the first games on the 12th.

But most sports fans are not "pan-fans". I'll watch other MLS games, but I want to watch Wizards games. 80% doesn't apply to me. 45% does. That sucks. The problems ESPN has with its NHL ratings is that virtually nobody watches games that don't feature their own teams. So you end up with Detroit against a large media market every week.

That's why espn2 features the MetroStars 9 times despite their 9th place finish last season.

The HDnet thing is very frustrating to me.

Just try calling direcTV and ask them what channels the ABC/ESPN college football package are normally on. If they have those (and they do), they should be the same channels. In 2001, I had the MLS package and as the CFB season opened, I recieved all the CFB games all season also. All for the low low price of $49!

Either way, the channels on every system will be posted many places long in advance.

As long as a game is on MetroSports is should be on MLS Shootout correct?

April 19 vs. SJ is on HDNet, but also listed on Metrosports.

That whole day is filled with soccer. EPSN in the afternoon, FSW and Shootout games at 6 and 630, then Wizards at 9. Oh what fun.

To me the best part is the weekly Wrap up show as those games not covered or other games I can't see will probably be played in the shrunk down version ala Extratime. I cannot due to time and other commitments see every game on tv or at the stadium and so it is nice to have a wrap up of what I will undoubtedly miss the first time around.
Still I also wish that every away game was televised.
