I don't remember how long that injury crisis went on, and all of whom was his competition, but all Campbell's playing over are fellow reservists/youth players. They have to play somebody. All it does is indicate he's better than them.
Looks people want Cole subs in then must hit a hat trick. Oh, 19 years old Hoppe did exactly that , then what?
To be fair, Joe picked up a career derailing knee injury like 2 weeks after he made his senior team debut at Dortmund.
Also, I looked it up out of curiosity, & their bench the game he appeared in was all proven guys, except him & 1 other guy. The benches Campbell has come off have 1 proven guy. In Campbell's case, they have to play academy guys/reservists out of necessity, & it seems he's deemed the most ready of those. The analog is plenty fair.
You're the one trying to make a qualitative comparison between the 2 as players. I'm merely pointing out that we've had a dude going down this path: a player who is impressing for Dortmund youth teams, but not immediately making the jump from youth to senior. In Gyau's case, he got 3 matchdays with the senior team before a knee injury picked up on national team duty prevented him from playing for 2 years and very clearly impacted his mobility once he got back on the pitch (IIRC, Dortmund had to give him a pity contract extension because his rehab took so long). We cannot know what kind of player Gyau would've been without that injury, but I don't see the controversy in pointing out that he was on a similar trajectory to the one Campbell is on now.
The pt of the comparison is they were a level below the Gios & CP's in priority integration. But were a level above the Junior Flores' of the system who seemingly wouldn't get chances even during an injury crisis. The top academy guys at their position, like Campbell & Gyau, would be favored. We don't have much of an end product comparison when it comes to Gyau due to the injuries. Though we saw flashes for the US before he got hurt. It's more what BVB thinks of him. Kind of ironic for some to use the appeal to authority, when BVB's feelings seem mixed.
I remember being so excited about Joe. It was dark times for Yanks abroad and for MLS prospects back then.
The truth is that there’s not much to say about it yet. Which is hard because we’ve had two prophetic prospects out of Dortmund in recent history. It’s not like when Reyna or Pulisic got a string of PT. He’s not done a ton in his minutes, and has at times looked out of place. Getting PT at this age for Dortmund is still and unbelievably positive sign still though. How much is because he’s a guy they believe in, and how much is because of all of the injuries isn’t clear. But we can hope that at the end of this injury streak he can stay with the first team.
Campbell has looked alright. A few nice plays I recall. Beat a couple Wolfsburg players on the dribble down the touchline then was fouled for a yellowcard in the Pokal. One of his best passages of play so far with the first team. He hasn’t been immediately electric like Pulisic or Reyna were though where you immediately sat up in your seat and thought this guy is program changing for the usmnt.
I haven’t seen him played so far. I don’t expect him to be an elite or world class talent but at the very least an Luca Koleosho or Weah type of player. My question is if he doesn’t seem out of place?
I followed Pulisic closely as soon as he made his first appearance with Dortmund. Here is his wiki entry: He was then promoted to the senior team in January 2016, at age 17.[17] He featured sparingly in his first season at the club, but his involvement began increasing dramatically in the following season, where he was a mainstay in the Dortmund team that won the 2016–17 DFB-Pokal. wiki says he scored 10 goals in 81 appearances with Dortmund senior team covering exactly 3 years. Pulisic wasn't much on defense (albeit for a team that didn't emphasize it.) Cole looks like he could be a good defensive winger and I'd guess that may have come from his formative years in Iceland. My verdict: So far, so good.
He has only really played decent minutes in that Pokal. He didn’t light the world on fire but given the context, I didn’t think he looked poor or overmatched. Other than that he had something like 10 minutes in the CL game and some stoppage time a couple of games in the league. I’m not sure how meaningful it is to try and evaluate him too much when he is basically playing a handful of minutes at the end of a game. The way I look at it is BVB has a pretty good batting average with young attackers and the fact that he is on the track he is right now should get your attention, injuries or no injuries. We’ll see how things play out from here, but Dortmund seem to give young players on this track plenty of chances. I’d be shocked if they loan him out any time soon for example.
HT at Leeds I switch to Dortmund and I see Can got a red card early so not too bright looking for Dortmund today. Sahin subs out Gittens and Malen comes in. I guess we'll see some minutes from Cole eventually. When playing with ten, I like some speed up top like Sahin could get from Cole because the opponent is likely feeling it and only a legit counter will slow them down.
Neither Pulisic nor Reyna were "immediately electric". They looked similar to Cole. They showed flashes. Pulisic moreso than Reyna. Pulisic was very fast and very quick with the ball. I would say that Cole looks to be between the two stylistically and is right on track with other Dortmund youth assets like Pulisic.
How good has Cole been for their youth system? Do you think that he will return to their youth roster or stay with their first team?
