Cole Bassett at Fortuna Sittard (olf Colorado Rapids)

Discussion in 'Yanks Abroad' started by Dave Marino-Nachison, Jun 28, 2019.

  1. If true, his first match is a clash with Ajax.
Fortuna somehow also managed to sign a top striker, the topscorer of the Turkish national team.

    Did Feyenoord buy him first?

  3. I've no clue as there's no Feyenoord based news about this move.

  4. To be honest I'm a bit disappointed if this loan really takes place. I wanted to see if he was up to the challenge and grow to the level to become a starter.
From the sources I read he's going to start as he's supposed to replace an outgoing key player of Fortuna.

I’m looking forward to it. Sounds like he will be expected to play 2000ish minutes in the Eredivisie this year. Didn’t seem like he was going to get that at Feyenoord.

The thing to remember is that Cole has 0 long term future at Fortuna Sittard unless someone else can help pay is wages. The non-EU minimum salary for Cole is way too high for Fortuna.

Cole is going to have to be noticeably better than Fortuna’s existing options to play because Fortuna has no real incentive to develop him (unless there is some thing unusual in the loan agreement that gives Fortuna some sort of financial incentive)

Yea, they must think he’s gonna be a plug and play starter.

I’m sure it will be cleared up in the coming days/weeks but the circumstances of this loan need some clarification.

People seem to be of two minds with the loan. They either think this is Feyenoord giving up on him or they still really like him and want him to get time.

Yea, was under the impression that a club loaning someone can't then loan them out again. Maybe there's some loophole with an affiliate club but that's obviously not the case here. Still, someone over there saw enough of him to give him another shot. Have to believe Sittard asked Feyenoord for their unvarnished opinion on the kid and Feyenoord gave it.

Essentially he and Che are in no mans land. Right? Back to MLS then or reserve play in Europe.

Feyenoord's midfield might still get decimated in this summer transfer window.

Benfica are making serious offers for Aursnes. Geertruida has been enquired about by some EPL club. Toornstra is starting to show his age. And Kokcu is being pursued by 3 or 4 EPL clubs.

Feyenoord did sign the Pole Syzmanski to replace Til as the attacking mid, so I expect Slot to give Bassett a hard look for a box-to-box role. In their friendly with RB Salzburg, he was playing back in front of the defenders so that would be either as a defensive mid or 8.

But, yeah, the Fortuna loan deal is dead.

Scores in friendly after coming in at the half. This one already 6-0 in the 75th minute:

Good to see. That Osasuna friendly was the last before next week's season opener against Vitesse, so Bassett getting some minutes and scoring the only goal shows that Slot rates him and he should get more first team action this season.

Feyenoord had a very long season last year, going the distance in the Europa Conference League (19 matches), along with the league (34), and Cup (several). Thus, they need a deep squad to cover for injuries and just plain fatigue. With Bassett being versatile, he should be useful to Feyenoord.

Aursnes is leaving for Benfica and Feyenoord are now adding defenders so I don't see any more midfielders coming in. Toornstra will get fewer minutes as Slot goes with youth. That is his hallmark.

Still the possibility of a loan (working out the tech details):

    https://www.vi.nl/nieuws/fortuna-sittard-wordt-concreet-voor-diemers

Fortuna is also in talks with Feyenoord about yet another attacking midfielder, Cole Bassett. The arrival of the American already rented from Colorado Rapids by the Rotterdam team has encountered practical obstacles for the time being, but both sources within Fortuna and the player himself sounded positive words about a transfer to Sittard last week.

Well, he got 10 minutes inc stoppage in a 5-0 win. Had a decent shot blocked if I am reading correctly.
It seems that F‘rood clearly see something as there were plenty other options on the bench to play.
Here is hoping that he, and Richie can get loans. They need time.
They both look like they can compete at this level and just need time to see where they can go.
